Recap / Fear The Walking Dead S 08 E 04 King County

Go To

Season 8, Episode 4

Morgan returns to King County to finally confront the last vestiges of his past.

  • Audience Surrogate: Mo functions as a way for Morgan to catch up any audience members who hadn’t watched the original series on what happened to Jenny and Duane.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Morgan is finally able to put Duane down and give himself closure. However, not only is Grace now dying from the radiation sickness again but has also been bitten by a walker on the stomach. Still, Finch not only escapes PADRE and reunites with Dwight and Sherry, but the radiation therapy June gave him worked, meaning there's still hope to save Grace.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the group racing to find June to save Grace, who has just been bitten by a walker.
  • Continuity Porn:
    • Morgan returns to King County, where he first met Rick Grimes back in the pilot episode of the series. He name-drops Rick and references meeting and allying with him.
    • Morgan retells much of what he himself told Rick when they reunited in "Clear".
    • Morgan says he killed everybody and anybody in front of him for some time, as we witnessed in "Here’s Not Here".
    • Grace laments how much time she seems to waste with her loved ones, something she expressed back in the Season 6 finale.
  • Not Quite Dead: "Clear" implied that Morgan was able to put Duane down along with Jenny. However, this episode confirms that Duane reanimated and that Morgan later chained him up in his attic, unable to kill him.
  • Running Gag: Early in the episode, Morgan kills some walkers that were feeding on dead skunks and gets their stench on him. Throughout the remainder of the episode, various characters keep giving him hell over how bad he smells.
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: PADRE is located in the Gulf of Mexico, but Dwight and Sherry’s party are able to communicate with headquarters all the way from King County, which is a fictitious county a bit south of Atlanta. Morgan and Mo are also able to get Grace back to the Gulf of Mexico from King County without her bleeding out or turning. For further reference’s sake, the characters are closer to the Coalition than they are to the Gulf of Mexico throughout the episode.
  • Wham Episode: One with ramifications for the entire franchise, as June’s radiation treatment has apparently legitimately worked if Finch’s survival is any indication, meaning that someone has successfully found a cure for walker bites.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Grace reveals that the radiation sickness is catching up to her again, and believes she doesn't have much time left. Not helped by receiving a walker bite to the stomach.
