Recap / Fanscription What If Ariel Was A Siren

Go To

Part of the Disney Elseworlds series, this Fanscription portrays a different, darker spin on The Little Mermaid (1989), exploring what would have happened if, instead of turning Ariel into a human and taking away her voice, Ursula made her into a siren, capable of attracting any man, in exchange for doing her a grisly favor...

This Fanscription contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Sympathy: Ursula is given a Freudian Excuse in this version, which she lacks in the normal version.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Ursula is ultimately successful in her plan, becoming queen of Atlantica with a mind-controlled monster version of Triton as her enforcer, destroying Eric's kingdom and killing thousands of land-dwellers, and plotting to conquer other kingdoms as well.
  • Blood Bath: One of the promotional images for the episode is a modified version of the Signature Scene of Ariel on the rock singing "Part of Your World (Reprise)", edited to have Ariel in her siren form (albeit her top half scales are a much more vibrant shade of green than they are in the episode), with blood splashing behind her rather than water. Granted, she does end up responsible for the deaths of multiple sailors...
  • Crossover Cameo: In addition to the final scene with Ariel in Arendelle, apparently the palace guards from Cinderella do double duty in Eric's kingdom.
  • Downer Ending: Eric's kingdom is destroyed, Ursula becomes the new ruler of Atlantica, and Eric himself rejects Ariel and is left imprisoned while she flees to Arendelle, using her powers on the local ice harvesters.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: King Victor ends up Eaten Alive by the giant Ursula, complete with the loud sounds of his bones being crunched by her teeth.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Turns out all Ursula needed to take over Atlantica was to do the exact opposite of what she did in the source material.
  • Ironic Name: King Victor is ultimately no match for an all-powerful sea witch.
  • Jump Scare: The reveal of Ariel's siren form plays out like this.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Siren!Ariel (white) and the seafolk who drink Ursula's potion (red).
  • Palette Swap: Both the younger Ursula and the woman that ends up marrying King Fredrick are basically Vanessa, Ursula's human disguise from the original film, in different colors.
  • Sequel Hook: The final scene, in which Ariel arrives in Arendelle and enchants the ice harvesters with her siren song.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Fredrick, Victor, and Eric all have remarkably similar facial features, including the same eyes, as pointed out by Ursula. Victor in particular is basically Eric with a beard and greying hair.
  • Wham Episode: One of the darkest Fanscriptions to date, with no outro on the making-of process to alleviate the mood.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Flounder, Scuttle, and Ariel's sisters vanish from the story completely after a certain point, and it's unclear whether Eric survives or dies by starvation while imprisoned.
  • Woman Scorned: Ursula has an additional motivation in this version, having had a fling with Eric's grandfather, King Fredrick, only for him to marry another woman and start treating her dismissively.
