Recap / Family Matters S 8 E 10 The Jury

Go To

Steve and Carl are summoned for jury duty, while 3J attempts to impress his new foster family.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Even the jury can't help but laugh whenever Steve embarrasses Carl, especially when he plays a video of Carl's head superimposed on a woman's body during a demonstration.
  • Camera Spoofing: This is how Bozelli is able to frame Hayes, by editing the security cam footage to make it look like Hayes was the one robbing the store. Unfortunately for him, Steve is a tech wiz who's quick to see through his manipulations.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The mirror in the jewelry store. While Bozelli tampered with the footage by editing Hayes' face onto his, he didn't count on the mirror reflecting his real face as he walked passed it. Steve is able to zoom into the mirror to prove that Bozelli is the culprit.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Steve demonstrates video manipulation by editing footage of Carl into the security tape. Unaware that it's just an edit, one of the jurors is convinced that Carl robbed the store.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Richie and 3J make a big breakfast for the family, consisting of boiled bacon, syrupy coffee, gummy bear pancakes, and eggs topped with chocolate and unwrapped bouillon cubes. Unsurprisingly, everyone dumps the food the moment the kids leave the room.
  • Digital Head Swap: In-Universe, Steve demonstrates this editing technique by cropping Carl’s head onto a woman's bikini body, much to his embarrassment. Steve does this to prove that the robber used the same technology to frame David Hayes for the crime.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The first time the security footage is played, Joey Bozelli's face can clearly be seen reflected in the mirror. One probably wouldn't have noticed this unless they've seen the episode already.
  • Gilligan Cut: Carl snarks about feeling sorry for the person who has to sit next to Steve in the jury box. Cut to Carl himself in the courtroom, miserably moping next to an excitable Steve.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In the prologue, Harriette chastises Laura for wearing Eddie's clothes without permission. From upstairs, Carl asks his wife if she's seen his "I Heart Donuts" sweater… which she happens to be wearing.
  • Jury Duty: Steve and Carl must serve as jurors for a case involving a jewelry store robbery. The accused is the shop's janitor, David Hayes, whom Steve later believes is innocent.
  • The Reveal:
    • The jewelry store robber is revealed to be Joey Bozelli, the store's security guard. He manipulated the security footage by superimposing David's face onto his body, framing the janitor.
    • The reason why 3J is so insistent about doing chores for his family? He's afraid that if he doesn't pull his weight around the house, they'll send him back into foster care, as his previous families did.
  • Rogue Juror: Steve. He's the only juror who believes that David is innocent, and this gets him into hot water with the rest of the jury. It turns out that he made the right call, as the defendant is revealed to have been framed by someone else.
