Recap / Family Guy S 17 E 7 The Griffin Winter Games

Go To

To the surprise of all the Griffins, Meg makes the U.S. Olympic team as a biathlete and competes in the Winter Olympics. However, while they're in Pyeongchang, Peter falls off a train and winds up in North Korea, where he is held prisoner, and the Griffins have to find a way to break him out.

Tropes

  • Ambiguously Bi: Played for Laughs when the family asks what Meg is all geared up for at the beginning of the episode after she says she is competing in the Winter Olympics.
    Meg: I'm a Bi…
    Stewie: Knew it.
    Meg:…athlete.
    Stewie: Didn't know it.
  • Art Shift: During the escape from North Korean prison, the medium of animation changes from 2D to 3D to mimic the style of GoldenEye (1997).
  • Bloodless Carnage: Lampshaded during the Golden Eye sequence.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When competing against her former voice actress Lacey Chabert, Meg tells her to "Shut up, Meg!"
  • Call-Back: To establish how long she's been training for the Olympics, Meg makes cameos in two iconic Family Guy scenes (the "Who wants chowder?" scene and the "Mom! Mommy! Momma!" scene) wearing winter clothes and skis and telling her family she's going to go train for the Olympics. She then appears in a scene from Season 1, with a higher-pitched voice reminiscent of her original Lacey Chabert voice.
  • National Stereotypes: Chris angrily yells at some offscreen Swiss for being neutral.
  • The Other Darrin: In-universe and Lampshaded. One of the flashbacks depicting Meg leaving for Olympic training features an impersonation of Lacey Chabert, who first voiced Meg.
Meg: See? I've been training since I was Lacey Chabert.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: This episode reveals Meg has been training to be an Olympic biathlete for years.
  • Retraux: When Meg and Peter have to break out of North Korean prison, they do so in the style of a GoldenEye (1997) level, complete with low-poly 3D models of all the characters and props.
