• An Aesop: As stated by Narrator!Chris himself at the end of the episode, when you’re in trouble, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Doc teaches Chris this by temporarily firing him until he tells the truth, to which he instantly rehires him as soon as the truth comes out.
• Armor-Piercing Question:

  Doc: Now, can you look me in the eye, and tell me you don’t know who robbed my store?

• Ballistic Discount: Discussed. When the police figures that Malvo's gun is just an empty handle, his response is "It's hard to rob a gun store, man, they got guns."
• The Dreaded: Malvo becomes this to Chris.
• Genre Savvy: Doc is able to see right through Chris’ claim that he doesn’t know who robbed him.
• It Will Never Catch On: When Chris politely asks Malvo to give Doc all the stuff he stole back, Malvo bursts into laughter and tells Chris that he "should be a comedian when [he] grows up".
• Misspelling Out Loud: Malvo's final words in the episode: "Chris, when I get out, I'm comin' after you! Y-O-O!"
• Poor Judge of Character: Doc genuinely believes that Malvo is a good guy and doesn’t suspect him a bit. Subverted when we find out that Doc is aware of Malvo’s reputation, but still didn’t think he’d rob him.
• Villain with Good Publicity: Malvo is good friends with Doc, and never once suspects him to have robbed his store.
