Recap / Ed, Edd, n Eddy S5, E15: The Good, The Bad and The Ed

Go To

Jealous of the Urban Rangers, Eddy tries to show them up and prove that they’re a bunch of phonies by competing against Rolf to win the most difficult badge: The Hairy Chest of Resilience Badge.

'The Good, The Bad and the Ed' contains examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: The names of the challenges for the badge - Wax of Wailing, Bramble Bush of Bellyache, Tour of Tears, etc.
  • All for Nothing: Eddy endures so much pain and ends up horribly injured, only to pass out one second before Rolf, therefore losing the challenge and the badge.
  • Butt-Monkey: Eddy really gets put through the wringer in this episode. First, Rolf mocks Eddy for being a short, flat-headed wimp, causing everyone except Double D to laugh at Eddy. Then, Eddy spends the whole episode suffering agonizing pain trying to beat Rolf in the competition and win the Hairy Chest of Resilience Badge, ending up greatly injured by the end. Then, he loses the badge due to passing out one second before Rolf, so Rolf wins the badge and mockingly gives Eddy the Crybaby Boohoo Badge. And to top it off, Eddy falls over while trying to go after Rolf, causing him to land on his face and knock out all of his teeth.
  • The Chew Toy: Eddy and Rolf suffer a lot of painful injuries while trying to get their Urban Ranger badges.
  • Determinator: Despite all the pain he takes in this episode, Eddy refuses to admit defeat.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite the fact that Eddy endured all of the horribly painful challenges without quitting and only lost because he passed out one second before Rolf, Eddy still gets no respect and is mockingly given the Crybaby Boohoo Badge as his “prize”.
  • Evil Virtues: Eddy's determination to one-up the Urban Rangers via trying to earn the toughest badge to the point that he will endure extremely painful challenges without quitting is rather admirable of him and it all makes his loss to Rolf a little painful.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Eddy mocks the Urban Rangers due to being jealous of them for getting cheered by all the other cul-de-sac kids, and tries to beat Rolf at winning the Hairy Chest of Resilience Badge just so the kids will see that the Urban Rangers are “phonies” and that he’s better than them.
  • Jerkass: Eddy and Rolf, although Rolf is somewhat justified in that Eddy was the one to start the whole conflict by mocking Rolf.
  • Kick the Dog: Eddy passes out one second before Rolf, losing the competition, and is horribly injured, but he does get a "consolation prize" - the Crybaby Boohoo Badge. This may be a case of this since Eddy endured all that suffering for nothing, however, he started the whole ordeal out of petty envy and would've rubbed it in the Rangers' faces upon finding out he got a badge as well until he sees what it really is.
Ed: See, there's a little rattle on it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Eddy is told that he still won a badge even though he lost to Rolf, Eddy wants to see it so he can rub it in the Urban Rangers’ faces. Ed then tells him that he got the Crybaby Boohoo Badge, greatly angering him.
  • Never Live It Down: Part of what motivates Eddy to challenge Rolf for the hardest badge is Rolf mocking Eddy for his utter failure in attempting to earn even one badge back in "Oath to Ed".
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Rolf is finally convinced to take up the challenge for the Hairy Chest of Resilience badge when Eddy mocks him.
  • Painful Body Waxing: The first challenge, the Wax of Wailing. Rolf gets angry sores all over his leg and Eddy's swells up like a balloon.
  • The Resenter: Eddy's motivation for trying to win the badge is built entirely on satisfying his own inflated ego and wanting to embarrass the Urban Rangers due to being jealous of their popularity and having a petty grudge against them for not letting him join them way back in season 1 when he failed their test.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: The Urban Rangers (especially Rolf) are this to Eddy. Eddy has a grudge against the Urban Rangers for not letting him join them and can't stand seeing the Urban Rangers getting the cul-de-sac kids’ respect and admiration.
  • Test of Pain: Eddy challenge Rolf to earn the most difficult badge possible, the Hairy Chest of Resilience badge. This requires both Eddy and Rolf to go through a series of challenges where they have to endure each painful task, such as getting their leg hairs waxed, getting their funny bone banged up, go through thorny brambles naked, get crushed between boulders, and finally go through a domino effect of painful experiences that ends with them landing on solid ground. Eddy loses by passing out one second before Rolf, and to add insult to injury, gets the humiliating “prize” of the Crybaby Boohoo Badge.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After Eddy is told the Urban Rangers still gave him a badge, even though he lost the competition, he was initially going to rub it in their faces. But then he finds out what badge he won.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: As stated above. Eddy planned on doing this when he found out he won a badge. The Urban Rangers giving Eddy the Crybaby Boohoo Badge after he lost would also qualify as this.
