Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S3 E3 "Imperfect Harmony"

Go To

After discovering the Dragon Eye and seeing the maps that it holds, Hiccup seeks permission to explore the islands detailed. He and his friends end up on a mysterious island with a weird sound.

Tropes:

  • Badass in Distress: All the Berkian riders except Hiccup get trapped in the Death Song's amber along with their dragons.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Hiccup and the gang have missed exploring and finding new dragons. The first new dragon they find, however, is far from friendly.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: During the Council debate, the question is whether or not to let Hiccup explore the lands that are on the Dragon Eye Maps.
    • Sven and Spitelout: Dagur is on the loose, so it's better for the Dragon Riders and the chief's son to be searching for him rather than seeking unknown lands. Hiccup especially has a responsibility to be present on Berk.
    • Hiccup: Dagur is also searching for land outside the Archipelago, given he wants the Dragon's Eye. and it's better to beat him to the punch before he can conquer more islands and capture more dragons.
    • Eventually Stoick rules in favor of Hiccup not because of reasoning but because he knows Hiccup will go anyway.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Snotlout's jar of Nightmare "gel" (actually flammable saliva).
  • Delayed Reaction: It takes a few minutes for Toothless to realize that he inadvertently detached Hiccup's peg leg while taking off to where the dragons are.
  • Disability Immunity: Thunderdrums' being hard of hearing makes them immune to the Death Song's spell.
  • Enemy Mine: Hiccup bonds with the purple Thunderdrum that attacked his friends so as to rescue everyone from the Death Song.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Hiccup realizes that the amber hardens when it cools; by heating it up again, it cracks and allows the dragons and his friends to escape.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The Death Song carries its victims off-screen to eat them and devours them in seconds.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Hiccup after the Death Song captures his friends, having led them into danger inadvertently to discover new dragons.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Invoked. Because the dragon they find is dangerous, the twins decide to name it "The Death Song".
  • No Time to Explain: Parodied when Toothless knows where the other dragons have gone and grabs Hiccup's leg to drag him to the situation. It's not that Toothless can talk, but Hiccup could've ridden him. Hiccup's prosthetic gets detached as a result.
Hiccup: That's okay, bud. I like the enthusiasm.
  • Papa Wolf: The Thunderdrum that was fighting the Death Song was trying to rescue a Thunderdrum baby.
  • Red Shirt: Several unknown dragons get eaten by the Death Song; Fishlegs is nearly the next source.
  • Retcon: Thunderdrums have never shown any signs of being hard of hearing before this episode.
  • Ship Tease: Hiccup and Astrid spend their first night outside of Berk looking at the moon and talking, despite being "just friends". They even seem to fall asleep next to each other.
  • Taking the Bullet: Astrid gets trapped in the hardened amber after pushing Hiccup out of the way.
  • This Way to Certain Death: The first thing the riders find on the island is a large pile of dragon bones.
