After nearly dying by Death Song in the previous episode, the teens become more careful in choosing an island to settle on. After finding a camping spot for the night, Tuffnut sees a strange dragon.
Tropes:
- Actually Pretty Funny: Hiccup admits near the end that though they're keeping the name "Night Terror" for the dragon species, the name of the leader ("Smidvarg") is growing on him.
- Amusing Injuries: Tuffnut keeps falling off cliffs while talking to the island's chicken, even when he sees them.
- Apple of Discord: No one can figure out how to build the outpost that they want, and they each have different and contradictory ideas. Hiccup suggests that the gang works together, but when it doesn't work his next option is to split the island five ways.
- Cat Scare: Done with a chicken in this case.
- Crying Wolf: Because Tuffnut tried to tell scary stories before bedtime, the riders don't believe him when he first sees the "large" dragon.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Smidvarg and the Night Terrors bond with the riders after Tuffnut captures the former, and the Riders work to protect the latter from hungry Changewings.
- Morton's Fork: Since Ruffnut lost the Thorston challenge, she had to switch clothes with Tuffnut. Had Tuffnut lost the Thorston challenge, he would've had to switch clothes with Ruffnut. Hiccup doesn't even try to make sense of this (with prompting from Astrid).
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By taking away "Smidvarg" from his brethren, Tuffnut endangers them since they can't form into a dragon shape to scare away predators without their alpha.
- Not So Above It All: Astrid joining in on Snotlout and Fishlegs' scuffle over a rock.
- Terrible Interviewees Montage: The riders go through a series of islands with various problems; the first has too many boars, the second Blue Oleanders, and the third has Whispering Deaths. And they end up re-visiting the Boar Island because Fishlegs forgot to check it off the list.
