Chapter 8: Oh Brother: Part 1

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Dagur seems to find the idea of killing a "demigod" as a one-way ticket to being the most feared and respected Viking in the Archipelago.
  • Blatant Lies: Everyone tries convincing Dagur that Hiccup was trying to kill Toothless and that the rumors he had been hearing are just misunderstandings, and that there are no "demigods." He doesn't buy it for a second.
  • Cassandra Truth: While Dagur is suspicious of all of the lies they try to feed him, the one thing they tell him that is the truth — that Mirabel is Hiccup's girlfriend, not his servant — he scoffs at.
  • Cliffhanger: Dagur figures out that the "Demigod" rumor is real and kidnaps Bruno.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • In "Twinsanity", the episode ends with Dagur being fooled out of thinking that Berk was hiding something, running off from an impromptu dragon attack. Here, he manages to figure out that the "Demigod" rumors are true, leaving as politely as he could manage before kidnapping Bruno.
    • In "Twinsanity", Barf and Belch was the dragon running about due to their riders doing nothing about it. Here, it's Hookfang causing trouble, being ornery since he's in his molting cycle.
    • While in "Twinsanity", Hiccup tried helping the other riders hide Barf and Belch, here Dagur insists that he would be the one to give him the tour of Berk.
    • In DreamWorks Dragons, Dagur gave Hiccup the "brother" epithet in "The Night and the Fury" after "saving" him from the dragon attack in "Twinsanity", later using it out of spite when he learns the truth. Here, he calls him "brother" right from the get-go.
  • Knows a Guy Who Knows a Guy: Dagur learns about Berk's "dragon army" from "a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a group of guys, who knows a lady" who knew about it.
  • Mythology Gag: When Dagur accuses Stoick of amassing an army of dragons for conquest, the latter notes that the idea is disgustingly familiar.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Dagur mocks Mirabel for her poor eyesight and declares that he'll have "physical impairments" be a felony that means life in prison.
Dagur: The Berserker tribe is only for the strongest!
    Gobber: How progressive.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Mirabel rightfully points out that Dagur is acting like a Spoiled Brat and he won't be taken seriously as a leader if he continues to throws tantrums over every little thing. Dagur being Dagur, the lecture goes over his head and tells Hiccup to reign in his "servant."
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Dagur figures out that everyone was lying and has Bruno kidnapped after Bruno saves him from being crushed by a falling statue.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The chapter's plot is an adaptation of the DreamWorks Dragons episode "Twinsanity"; the Berserkers come to Berk, revealing that Dagur is the new chief and everyone has to act like everything is normal.
