Goku: I sort of have a hole in my esophagus.
Krillin: Wait, then how are you breathing? ...Goku?
(Goku dies)

Goku and Piccolo team up to defeat Radditz and retrieve Gohan. During the ensuing fight, Piccolo is forced to use the Special Beam Cannon while Goku holds Radditz in place - which ends up killing both Raditz and Goku. Piccolo takes off with Gohan.

• Breaking the Fourth Wall: A case of Early-Installment Weirdness.
  • Goku points out to Raditz that Piccolo's status as a Namekian rather than a demon hasn't been established.
  • Krillin cheers that he's not the first to die in the series.
• Chirping Crickets: When Gohan is kidnapped by Piccolo:
  Krillin: Quick, somebody stop him!
  (beat)
  (crickets)
  Krillin: Damn it, Roshi!
  Roshi: Shut up, Krillin.
  (Krillin Owned Count: 2)
• Comically Missing the Point: Raditz doesn't understand why Goku's and Piccolo's power levels increase when they take off their weighted clothing.
  Raditz: So, nudity makes you stronger on this planet?
• Delicious Distraction: As Raditz has his foot on Goku's chest:
  [Raditz applies pressure to his foot]
  [cracking sound]
  Goku: AHH!
  Raditz: Stop ignoring me!
  Goku: Aaah, my ribs! I think you broke my... [dreamingly] Mmmm... Ribs...
• Does Not Understand Sarcasm: Piccolo sarcastically confesses to being a Yoshi, and Goku believes it.
  Piccolo: It's called "sarcasm"!
  Goku: What's that taste like?
  Piccolo: Dammit, Goku!
• Dude, Not Funny!: One of the In-Universe Running Gags established is Krillin saying something inconsiderate about recently-fallen comrades.
  Krillin: Holy crap. (cheerfully) I'm not the first person to die in this series!
  Roshi: Krillin!
  Krillin: What?
  Roshi: Too soon!
• Enemy Mine: Subverted, Goku and Piccolo team up to defeat Raditz but Piccolo uses the opportunity to kill Goku as well.
• The Hero Dies: Goku is killed by a Special Beam Cannon through the esophagus.
• Is It Something You Eat?: Goku wonders this about sarcasm, and soon after, gets distracted by the name 'ribs'.
• Too Long; Didn't Dub: Inverted; Piccolo can't say the original Japanese name of his attack, so he calls it the "Special Beam Cannon" instead.
