Recap / Creeped Out S 2 E 9 Tilly Bone

Go To

The Curious walks along a driveway and pours sugar into a container.

This story is told in reverse chronological order through footage recorded on a video camera.

Teen vlogger Cass's dad wakes in the morning after a slumber party she held for her birthday. He goes downstairs and is worried to find the house trashed and Cass missing. Suddenly, Cass appears and hugs him. She gestures to a strange doll lying on the rug and says that she knows what her gift was: it's Junebug.

Previously, Cass searches upstairs for "Junebug", but cannot find her. Cass's friend Alice is being attacked by a talking "Peekaboo Doll" that eventually chases her out of the house. Junebug (now a human girl) appears and threatens Cass, forcing her to keep filming and to use the Tilly Bone - a mysterious bone which "makes enemies for your enemies" - on another friend, Claudia. Claudia becomes convinced she is being menaced by something she can't see, and runs out into the street screaming. Junebug says that now, it's her turn to use the Tilly Bone on Cass. Cass says she didn't do anything wrong, and Junebug says "Didn't you?" Nate, who is also staying over, appears and says he killed his "Tilly" by destroying Cass's birthday cake; he tells Cass he never wants to speak to her again and leaves the house. Cass screams that Junebug ruined her birthday, and the girls wrestle over the Tilly Bone. Junebug wins and advances on Cass saying "what comes around goes around." Cass says that's wrong: the phrase is "what goes around comes around." Somehow Junebug is sucked into a rug on the floor, and demands to know how Cass made this happen. She warns that Cass is "just shooting the messenger"; but the rug completely absorbs her.

Previously, Junebug tells Nate, Alice, and Claudia that the Tilly Bone can create a Tilly: something that will latch onto them and mess with their heads. It will take the form of whatever they think about when they are hit with the effects of the bone. She uses the bone on Nate, who reacts as if he's being pinched by something invisible. Cass guesses he thought about birthdays, since pinching someone on their birthday is a tradition in her family. Junebug then hits Alice with the Tilly Bone and, when Alice thinks of the Peekaboo Doll she had as a child, the doll suddenly appears and attacks her. Alice tries to throw the doll away but it keeps coming back. Cass says they've had enough now, and that Junebug has a magical powder that can undo the effects of the Tilly Bone. But Junebug says she lied about it and reveals the powder is just sugar. Alice and Claudia are scared out of the room, and Junebug tells Cass to remember the feeling of having her confidence ruined. Cass tries to use the Tilly Bone on Junebug when Junebug is not looking, but it doesn't work.

Previously, Cass's friends pull a bad prank to convince her the school is having a charity event to raise money by dressing up. They are unaware that Junebug is recording them. Cass goes to school in cosplay as Wild Hawk, the heroine of the Outer Realms movies. Everyone laughs at her and she cries in the bathroom. Junebug shows her the video footage of her friends setting her up, and reveals the Tilly Bone, promising to help her get revenge. Cass hesitates, but Junebug claims she has a powder that can reverse the effect of the bone. Subsequently Cass invites Junebug to her slumber party. At the party, Cass and her friends watch the entire Outer Realms series and when the movies end, Junebug announces it's time to play a "game." She takes out the Tilly Bone.

Previously, Cass posts a vlog criticising a newly released Outer Realms prequel. She thinks there is no point in telling the end of a story before the beginning. She then hears the doorbell ring and goes outside to see that a package has been delivered for her, containing a box. At school Cass invites her friends to sleep over for her birthday and watch all the Outer Realms movies. She shows them the box she received: it contains a doll (Junebug) and a note claiming to be from Mos Ducasse, the reclusive creator of the movie franchise. The note says Ducasse noticed from Cass's profile that her birthday was coming up, and wanted to give her a gift "you don't unwrap, it unfolds." Cass thinks it's a prank and there's no way the real Ducasse watches her videos. Cass and her friends notice the human Junebug is new at school; they don't talk to her, but unknown to Cass, Junebug uses the Tilly Bone on her.

At the end of the episode The Curious appears outside Cass's school.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Back to Front: The episode is narrated in reverse chronology.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Cass’s friends are a bit like this. They played a bad joke on Cass and do not seem remorseful for it. However, it is possible that they were controlled to play the joke on Cass by Mos Ducasse.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Everything falls apart for Cass on her birthday.
  • The Cat Came Back: The peekaboo doll keeps reappearing after it keeps getting thrown away.
  • The Complainer Is Always Wrong: Seemingly Mos Ducasse's attitude toward Cass.
  • Cover Identity Anomaly: Claudia thinks everyone should have guessed Junebug isn't who she said she was - because normal teenagers do not drink rosehip tea.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Claudia has many such lines.
  • Expy: The Outer Realms movies appear to be a pastiche of Star Wars.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: This episode is unique among the series, being told in reverse chronological order and in a "found footage" style.
  • Found Footage: The episode takes this format.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Alice wears them.
  • It's All My Fault: Subverted. Cass’s friends, Claudia, Nate and Alice are the ones who pranked her, but that was because Cass’s Tilly was being pranked. Because of that, it can be presumed that her friends were being controlled when they pranked Cass.
  • Left Hanging: It is never revealed what happened to Claudia when she ran out of Cass’s house in terror, or what happened to Alice with the Peekaboo doll. Nate and Cass are the only two who are known to be safe after beating their Tillies.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Enforced by the framing device. Since the episode is narrated through reverse chronology, we see events out of context, only for the episode to rewind further to show the context leading up to those events.
    • Near the start of the episode, we see Junebug being defeated by being sucked into the floor, with her freaking out about how this is possible. It's revealed later that its a result of Junebug's own "tilly", where Cass hit her when she was saying "when you least expect it, wish the ground would open up and swallow you."
    • One scene shows Cass coldly using the Tilly Bone on Claudia after Junebug finds her in the bathroom trying to call someone. It's later revealed just before, that Junebug forced Cass to do it to her after threatening to use the Tilly Bone on her sleeping parents when she tries to stop it.
    • The first scene with Nate is him interrupting Cass and Junebug by saying he got rid of his "tilly", then saying he will never talk to Cass again. It unfolds that he was the first person who gets hit with the Tilly Bone, whose "tilly" manifested in random pinchings because the first thing he thought was "birthday pinches", who gets rid of it by eating Cass' birthday cake.
    • The first scene with Alice is her running down the stairs, freaking out after a doll says "peekaboo!". It's revealed that the doll is her "tilly", and she's been running away from the doll that has been following her.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Inverted; Nate is the only boy among a group of female friends.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Alice apparently likes anchovies on pizza, to which the others predictably react with disgust.
  • Take That!: As the last few minutes could attest, this episode could be considered on to entitled fans.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: When someone is hit by gas from the tilly bone, the first thing they think about gets manifested into reality as a "tilly" to harass said person. The characters' respective tillies are:
    • Nate: Birthday pinches.
    • Alice: A persistent doll that plays peekaboo with her.
    • Claudia: Something that only she can "see" that's always directly behind her.
    • Junebug: Being sucked into the floor.
    • Cass: Being pranked.
  • Theme Naming: All instalments in the Outer Realms franchise have a colour in the title.
