Recap / Creeped Out S 2 E 8 Takedown

Go To

Alexa, an aspiring high school wrestler, is ridiculed for being the only girl on the team. While training, her coach is so impressed by her ability to outmanoeuvre an opponent that he wants to put her forward for regional tryouts. Alexa is very worried that all the other competitors are much bigger and way more muscular than her. Later, Alexa is hanging out with her best friend Lucky when she receives a mysterious text from "Trudi." Trudi promises to steal a "gift" from someone else for Alexa and take something from Alexa herself as well; if Alexa doesn't send a request, Trudi will steal a gift and give it to Alexa and take something from Alexa anyway. Alexa blocks the phone number, but gets the exact same text again immediately after she blocks it. When the texts keep coming, Alexa gives in and replies, "I want physical strength." The next morning she wakes up to discover her physical strength is vastly enhanced.

Alexa receives a text saying a gift has now been taken from her. This panics Alexa as she tries to figure out what Trudi took, and whether someone else has become weaker in exchange for Trudi's strength. When training it becomes apparent that her rival, Lincoln, has indeed become weaker although he thinks he is just sick. Alexa tries out against teammate George for the spot at regional tryouts. George is so intimidated by her newfound strength that he forfeits and Alexa is through to the next round. She sneers at George and dismisses Lucky, who is worried that Lincoln is becoming weaker and weaker. Lucky visits her that night and is alarmed that she has been repeatedly asking Trudi for more strength - he fears that Lincoln might die. He says that her strength has actually made her wrestling worse since she no longer thinks tactically. Alexa only cares about making it to the regional team since her dad will be watching her try out. When Lucky tries to grab her phone to text Trudi, she injures and threatens him.

But when Alexa goes to tryouts, Lincoln has fully recovered. It turns out Lincoln really was sick and is in league with Trudi too. He asked for technique and Alexa had her clever technique stolen, and he lost his sense of smell. Because of this, she loses the coveted regionals spot to him. Wondering who her strength came from, she is horrified to see that everyone on the cheerleading squad, including Lucky, who is the captain of the cheerleading squad, has become so weak they are unable to even walk and stand. Alexa texts Trudi begging her to give her strength back but gets a message from Trudi saying "if you break the chain you break it for all." Lincoln warns her not to do this - everyone who’s been gifted by Trudi will lose their gifts, including him. Alexa says she doesn't care, and texts Trudi demanding to break the chain, Lincoln attempts to stop her not wanting to lose Alexa’s stolen technique, but she manages to send the text. Trudi replies saying she has undone all the chains ever made and Lucky and the rest of the cheerleaders recover. Alexa then leaves, upset and embarrassed. Alexa meets her dad in his car crying. Alexa's dad consoles her over not making the regional team and says he's still proud of her. Alexa admits to him that she always thought her dad wanted a son. Her dad tells her she is very much wrong, and that he grew up with four brothers. He wanted a daughter so badly he even asked for one. Alexa asks what he means by this. He explains that when her mother was pregnant, he received a mysterious chain letter promising to steal a "gift" for him, so he asked for his child to be a girl. The camera cuts back to Alexa, now a boy.

Later, The Curious plays in the now-empty gym at Alexa's school. Upon receiving a text from Trudi, The Curious simply replies, "I am The Curious."

This episode contains examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Alexa wished to become stronger, only to steal health from her best friend and lose her tactics, which were what truly made her great.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The cheerleaders get their strength back, Lincoln gets his comeuppance by losing his technique and Alexa finally realises her father is proud of her, however just as she realises that he wanted a daughter all along, she turns into a boy as the chain was broken, so her father has lost the daughter he wanted and it’s going to be complicated explaining this to everyone she knows.
  • Chain Letter: How Trudi operates. In the past, she used letters, by in the present, she’s switched to sending texts.
  • Gender Bender: After learning that her dad wished for a girl as part of a chain letter, Alexa turned from a boy to a girl before her parents knew her gender. Later Alexa turns back into a boy having broken Trudi's chain.
  • Jerk Jock: Lincoln and the rest of the Wrestlers. They are sexist towards Alexa, not accepting her as their teammate and believing her inferior to them, when she is actually the best on the team. Lincoln also mocks Lucky for being a male cheerleader.
  • Left Hanging: It is never explained who or what "Trudi" is.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Alexa is a physically aggressive wrestler while her best friend, Lucky, is a gentle cheerleader.
