Songs

"First Penis I Saw" (sung by Donna Lynne Champlin)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of "Mamma Mia" (the song) by ABBA. In addition to melodic similarities, the two-shot of singers in 90 degree angles of each other, used in other ABBA videos as well, gets imitated.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The redheaded Paula's backup singers are a brunette grocery employee and a blonde shopper.
  • First Love: Subverted. Paula sings about her first penis instead.

"My Friend's Dad" (sung by Rachel Bloom and Eddie Pepitone)

Tropes in the episode:

  • Aww Look They Really Do Love Each Other: After Paula rejects Jeff and returns back to West Covina, she tell her husband that she really does love him, which he reciprocates.
  • Backstory: Paula's old life before West Covina is suggested and shown.
  • Breather Episode: This is pretty much the only episode in Season 3 where Rebecca seems genuinely happy and hopeful, and the problems it deals with are comparatively light ones. Coming as it does right after Rebecca's complete collapse over the course of the first half of the season, this was definitely a needed break before things started getting worse again.
  • History Repeats: Paula meets Jeff in a grocery store, similar to Rebecca's first encounter with Josh in West Covina in Josh's Girlfriend Is Really Cool.
  • Nausea Fuel: In-Universe — Josh drops a shaker that lands on the Staph infection on his face. The fluid lands right in the drink he just served. Everyone is suitably disgusted.
  • Odd Friendship: Rebecca develops one with Paula's father. Paula is initially confused and a little annoyed, but she goes along with it because it means she doesn't have to take care of him.
  • Old Flame Fizzle: Paula's feelings towards Jeff change once he intends to take things further than just reminiscing the old days.
  • Parental Substitute: Downplayed. Rebecca is not in need of life guidance from a father figure, she just wants to have fun with Paula's dad.
  • Silent Credits
  • Straw Conservative: Paula's dad is very much a stereotypical racist, gun-toting, hard-drinking, gleefully offensive old white guy. Subverted in that he's very cheerful and even charming in his own way, and Rebecca gets along great with him.
  • Switching P.O.V..: This is the first episode of the series without Josh in the title. Instead of Rebecca's point-of-view, the episode gets its title from Paula's POV.
