Recap / Chuck S 5 E 11 Chuck Vs The Bullet Train

Go To

Casey: Lester, now I'm gonna tell you something I never dreamed I'd be telling you, never dreamed I'd have to tell you, but the situation is extreme. This is Colonel John Casey of the National Security Agency.
Lester: That is so funny! There's a John Casey who works at the Buy More.

A confrontation with a ruthless agent aboard a Japanese bullet train becomes a hostage situation for Chuck and Sarah and puts Casey in a dire predicament.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Literally. Having had their memories wiped, Jeff and Lester don't remember wanting to forget the events of the previous episode. Which is lucky, because it leads to them saving Alex, Morgan and Awesome.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Jeff and Lester come to the rescue of Alex, Morgan and Awesome armed with the contents of Casey's trunk. The sight of a nutter like Jeff armed with a flamethrower causes an immediate surrender.
Lester: You're outgunned, outmanned, out... side. And, it's a lovely day. So throw down your gun and nobody gets hurt.
Agent: You're the one who should be worried about getting hurt.
Jeff: [Appears with flamethrower amid "Oh Canada" crescendo] Behold the flame of destiny! Ha-ha!
    Lester: What he said.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: After discussing the history of Morgan's bad Intersect, Ellie realises that Intersect damage is directly related to concentrated Intersect use (Morgan was fine for weeks until he started going on missions, then he quickly deteriorated). Sarah has only had the Intersect for two days, but she's been using it extensively to find Chuck.
  • Faking the Dead: Sarah and Casey faked a message from Quinn's agents saying Sarah and Casey were killed at the end of Chuck Versus Bo, then have themselves mailed to where Quinn is keeping Chuck for a surprise attack.
  • Godzilla Threshold: With Alex being held at gunpoint, and Morgan and Awesome captured trying to rescue her, Casey's only hope to save his daughter's life are... Jeff and Lester. Giving them access to the Crown Victoria's arsenal is not something Casey would do otherwise.
  • Horrifying the Horror: John Casey is a scary guy. According to Alex, Jeff and Lester give him nightmares.
  • I Have Your Daughter: Two of Quinn's agents take Alex hostage to force Casey to turn on Chuck and Sarah.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Quinn is able to trigger Intersect flashes in Sarah to erase the last five years of her memory... including everything about Chuck. The final scene sees him posing as her handler to send her to kill him.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Morgan and Awesome raid the trunk of Casey's car, then take position ready to shoot the agents in the van where Alex is being held, all while having an animated earpiece conversation with Casey about what they're doing. Shockingly, while they're doing all this, an agent sneaks up behind and takes them prisoner too.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Morgan protests acting as lab rat while Awesome and Ellie try to figure out when Sarah's Intersect is likely to harm her.
Alex: Morgan, you're helping the mission. Just keep telling yourself that.
Morgan: Yeah, I know. I just, I don't know, man. I - I just feel like, no matter how much they poke around in my skull and look around in there, they're just, they're not going to find anything. You know? [Alex chuckles] Okay, ha-ha.
    Alex: Come on.
    Morgan: Yeah, I know.
  • Title Drop: Quinn is transporting his prisoner Chuck on the titular Japanese train.
  • Wham Line: Sarah's Intersect has been hurting her, but so far there are no signs of memory loss. Then she makes this observation:
Sarah: You keep talking about Alex, how she's in danger. But... I can't remember anyone called Alex.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Seriously, what was the chicken button for?
