- Bait-and-Switch: After Hideo learns the truth as to what happened to his little brother, Hideo states that he cannot let Shadowsan return home...until after he finishes his duty with Carmen.
- Bilingual Backfire: Played with. Zack in his museum employee disguise tries to pass off his fumbling of Zari's questions as his English being poor... so Zari, without missing a beat, switches to Italian to accommodate him. He's only saved by Player translating and feeding him responses through his earpiece.
- Brick Joke: Carmen using the olive oil to stop Neal. Later, when Zari appears to arrest Carmen and Shadow-san, Hideo knocks her unconscious with a guiding post. His response?Hideo: I had no olive oil.
- Chekhov's Gun: When Zack and Ivy lose Neal the Eel, they meet up with some vendors who wished to sell them olive oil. Carmen uses a bottle of this to trip Neal up.
- Cool Mask: Carmen and Shadowsan wear masks that wouldn't look out of place in Carnivale, and the caper involves decorative masks from around the world.
- Flashback: The scene in "The Daisho Caper" where Shadowsan reunited with his brother is played out again.
- Improbable Weapon User: Hideo knocks Zari unconscious with a guiding post.
- Irony: Neal the Eel’s specialty of being slippery and hard to catch. He ends up slipping over spilled olive oil.
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Zack's disguise as an employee from the museum is just him in a uniform and scribbled-on mustache.
- Redemption Quest: Hideo specifically calls his brother's life now warring against V.I.L.E. as such. He tells his brother he cannot come back until it is done, but waits with anticipation.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mime Bomb just dives into the waters of Venice after he gives up trying to tell Neal that the police are on their tail.
- Stunned Silence: Carmen and Shadowsan just look in silence when they see that Hideo knocked out Zari with a guiding post. Shadowsan is the one the most shocked; this is his law-abiding brother after all!
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: One-sided on Mime Bomb's part who really can't stand Neal. Neal is completely oblivious to the hatred.
- You Have to Believe Me!: When Hideo arrives just as Carmen and Shadow-san have the masks in a crate, they show him a video clip of Mime Bomb, who is passing time by miming that he is fishing, and state he's a criminal. Naturally, Hideo is skeptical.
