"Right Play" is the 7th episode of the third season of Bosch.

Sgt. Snyder of IA finally nails down Bosch for an interview about the "128 complaint", which, as it turns out, is basically conduct unbecoming in relation to Bosch's confrontation with Rick O'Shea in episode 3-1. Bosch is hostile and contemptuous and eventually gets Sgt. Snyder to admit that she lodged the complaint herself.

The DNA from the joint Harry found outside his house is matched to Woody Woodrow. The LAPD begins staking out Woodrow's apartment.

Robertson and Pierce bring in Jesse Tafero to Hollywood station, convincing Jesse that he's there for a friendly interview. Eventually the facade is dropped and Tafero is arrested. Robertson seizes Tafero's watch, hoping to find DNA that will match Edward Gunn and the watch marks on Gunn's back.

Crate and Barrel's scouring of traffic cam footage pays off as they find film of Sharkey and Xavi Moreno in Xavi's car.

Rudy Tafero gets his brother out of jail. Later, Rudy chucks his watch into a sewer.

Bosch and Edgar are taking their turn staking out Woodrow's house. Edgar strolls over to the local coffee shop to get coffee, only to see Woodrow sitting there outside. Woodrow goes for a gun, and Edgar shoots him to death.

The cops go to the homes of Moreno and Dobbs after this and find that both of them have skipped. Edgar tells his story to the Force Investigation Division investigators, but finds himself still struggling with having killed a man.

From his own deck, Bosch sees a fire. He calls Mank at the station, and finds out it's Riverwatch, the retirement community where Caffrey, the detective who investigated the murder of Harry's mother in 1979, resided.

In domestic matters, Edgar's son Jack has hacked into a neighbor's modem and has been sucking up his bandwidth to download Rosetta Stone. And Irvin Irving takes Jun Park the translator out on a date.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back:
    • The retirement home where Caffrey lived is burned down, foreshadowing the restart of the "who killed Harry's mother" story arc.
    • Jerry recalls the death of Nash while talking with Harry at home after Woodrow's shooting.
  • Child Prodigy: Jack Edgar is smart enough to hack into a neighbor's internet modem. And he downloads Rosetta Stone so he can learn Chinese, Russian, and Gaelic.
    Jerry: [boggled] Gaelic!?
  • Creator Cameo: Edgar's neighbor Sam is played by Eric Dickerson, who has directed numerous episodes of Bosch (but not this one).
  • Internal Affairs: Sgt. Snyder is trying to get Bosch suspended. Later Irving tells Snyder's IA boss that they shouldn't suspend a great detective over penny-ante nonsense.
  • Oh, Crap!: Woody and Edgar get a pretty good moment of staring into each other's eyes, before Edgar shoots Woody.
  • Shout-Out: Jun Park was a fan of Xena: Warrior Princess.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Edgar has a hard time dealing with it after he kills Woodrow. It's much different from when they killed Nash a year ago, since Nash technically blew himself up.
  • Title Drop: Bosch tells Edgar that he made the right play, that even without seeing the gun he knew instinctively that Woodrow had one.
