Recap / Bojack Horseman S 3 E 01 Start Spreading The News

Go To

  • Didn't Think This Through: BoJack reveals what happened between him and Penny to the reporter. If not for Ana's interference, the story would have made public and make his life and Penny's family's life even worse.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Person (Todd) smuggled in an airplane suitcase? Fine. Assault rifle smuggled in an airplane suitcase? Fine. Shampoo bottle in an airplane suitcase? Not on the TSA's watch!
  • Drunken Montage: Somehow, Todd becomes lost in the hallway of the hotel, and, in a parody of The Lost Weekend, he walks towards the camera while common hotel signs flash past him.
  • Foreshadowing: The painting in BoJack's hotel room showing shirtless horses running in a field.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: A pigeon tries to commit suicide by jumping off a ledge, only to remember she could fly.
  • Furry Reminder: When on the phone with Mister Peanutbutter to try to convince him to get a job, Princess Carolyn encourages him to get money like one would encourage a happy dog to get a toy.
  • Insulted Awake: While doing interviews at the beginning of the episode as part of the movie, BoJack is dozing off in his chair, until his interviewee mentions that this movie would be his next hit since that "sucky show from the 90s." This causes him to snap awake and go right into defending Horsin' Around.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: BoJack finds himself unable to perform in bed with the manatee reporter, mainly because a comment she made in passing reminded him of his disastrous encounter with Penny two episodes prior.
  • Know When to Fold Them: J.D. Salinger wants to cancel Hollywoo Stars and Celebrities... at the height of its popularity. Depending on how people remember their favorite shows, many shows have a habit of ending/canceling too soon despite incredible fanfare, in order to avoid Jumping the Shark, or run for so long that they suffer that fate.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Right before sleeping with BoJack, the manatee asks him if "he's more man than horse, or if he's more horse than man", just like in the song that plays in the credits.
  • No Sense of Direction: Todd manages to get lost in the same hotel hallway all episode long.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Sort of. BoJack becomes impotent when his fling reminds him of his incident with Penny, and his moral conundrum over whether or not he even wanted to go through with it and says he probably would have against his better judgment. However, we still don't know which of them made the first move.
  • Put on the Bus: Wanda Pierce had left for Detroit sometime after breaking up with BoJack last season, now in charge of a new TV network.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After hearing BoJack's story about him and Penny, the manatee reporter leaves the next morning, this being potentially juicy details for her news scoop. BoJack rushes to his handler, Ana Spanakopita, for help. However, having eavesdropped next to his room, she promises she will get the situation handled. Later, she returns and says that "it's handled" as promised. How exactly it was "handled" is left unsaid, and we never see the manatee again. We then hear the recording made of BoJack's confession to the manatee reporter from Ana who plays the tape for Diane in Season 5.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After succeeding Wanda, Pinky wants to make use of the popularity of the Hollywoo Stars and Celebrities: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things?? Let's Find Out! game show. To his dismay, J.D. Salinger requests the show end after its first season, satisfied with the results.
