Recap / Bobs Burgers S 14 E 9 Fraud Of The Dead Zombie Docu Pocalypse

Go To

A home movie documenting Louise’s archery skills turns into a battle against an oncoming zombie horde for the Belcher family.

Tropes:

  • Angst? What Angst?: In-Universe; the Pesto twins largely gloss over their father being Killed Offscreen, with their only concern being that they can no longer be his favorite.
  • Author Phobia: In-Universe; Louise expresses her dislike of mustard by writing it into her movie as the only thing that can kill a zombie.
  • Brick Joke: In-Universe; When Tina thinks she's going to die, she says she hopes the footage she's been recording is found by an editor with a similar vision to her and not somebody who is going to use star wipe transitions. The final shot of the film into its credits is a star wipe.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The restaurant's mustard bottles are shown (and mocked by Louise) at the beginning of the episode before the ending reveals them to be the zombies' weakness.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Played for Laughs; despite Bob allowing the kids to take apart the restaurant for the barricade scene and several of the Belchers' associates going out of their way to participate in the film, the only person given special thanks in the credits is Ken.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Louise eventually admits her archery skills to be nonexistent, claiming that she isn't strong enough to pull the bowstring back. She does however discover that she can pull it using her legs instead.
  • Genre Shift: The movie shifts from documenting Louise’s archery skills to the Belchers trying to survive a zombie apocalypse only a few minutes into the episode.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Bob and Linda hold off the zombie horde to allow their kids to escape.
  • Jump Scare: Rudy pops up in his zombie make-up while screaming towards the last few seconds of the end credits.
  • Killed Offscreen: Jimmy Pesto Sr. doesn't appear in the movie, and the Pesto twins get one line mentioning that he's dead before they swiftly move on. While not explicitly stated, it can be inferred that he refused to participate (or Bob refused to let him) and Louise added the line to Hand Wave his absence.
  • Limited Lyrics Song: When Louise starts shooting mustard-coated arrows from atop her bed loft, a brief song plays that consists solely of the lyrics, "She's good at archery now / She's good at archery now..."
  • Mockumentary: An In-Universe example, as Louise makes a zombie movie disguised as a documentary.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: In-Universe, the film project was almost cancelled when Louise had real-life struggles to actually learn archery due to her lack of upper body strength, but then decided to incorporate that into the plot.
  • Spoiler Title: Despite being in the episode's title, Louise being a fraud at archery isn't revealed until the second half of the episode.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Louise found out the hard way that archery requires a lot of upper body and arm strength, which she lacks, which left her incapable of pulling the bow back hard enough to launch any arrows.
    • Louise also mentions that while her legs are strong enough to pull the bow back, she is unable to properly aim with them.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The zombies are revealed to have a dislike of mustard, which the Belcher kids use to defeat them.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Louise's movie is about zombies attacking the restaurant in the middle of her documentary.
  • Zombie Infectee: Sheltering with the Belchers, the Pesto twins hide the fact that Andy has already been bitten.
