This would normally be a triumphant moment...but looks can be deceiving.

Don't worry, Gwen, I'll take care of your family. And that watch.

Charmcaster tries switching bodies with Ben to obtain the Omnitrix, but ends up switching with Gwen instead. Before she can explain what happened, Gwen in Charmcaster's body is imprisoned and must escape in order stop the real Charmcaster from successfully executing her plan.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Charmcaster doesn't take it well if anyone calls her a "freak". The fact she's in Gwen's body when Ben calls her that name doesn't change a thing.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When Ben says offhandedly calls Charmcaster-in-Gwen's-body a "freak", Charmcaster doesn't take it so well. Enraged, she grabs Ben's foot and twists it, just to spite him for it. The severity of her reaction is one of the red flags that tells Ben something's wrong with "Gwen".
  • Everybody Has Standards:
    • Charmcaster-in-Gwen's-body uses her magic to make lobsters unceasingly pinch two thieves out of spite for (unintentionally) stealing her ingredients. When Diamondhead suggests they help the thieves, Charmcaster responds "Let them suffer". Ben may be all out for making bad guys pay for their misdeeds, but even he's shocked at how cruel "Gwen" is.
    • A low-key one. Nobody likes being called "freak", but even on her worst day, Gwen is too well-adjusted to react violently to Ben calling her that. The fact Charmcaster in Gwen's body acts such a way is a red flag for Ben.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Charmcaster's second body swap attempt leads her to end up back in her body, Ben's voice can be heard taunting her for her failure, but Gwen's voice notes that she doesn't feel like herself at all. Cue Ben and Gwen coming out of the smoke and realizing they've swapped bodies.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Charmcaster intends to use a spell to switch bodies with Ben so she can gain control of the Omnitrix, only for Gwen to accidentally take Ben's place in the spell instead. Charmcaster spends the entirety of the episode conjuring up two body swap spells to try again, but the first time fails when she ends up back in her body while Gwen and Ben swap instead, and the final spell ends up being used to switch Ben and Gwen back to their rightful bodies.
  • Impostor-Exposing Test: The real Gwen tries using this on herself and Charmcaster by telling Ben to ask about something only the real her knows, but Ben accidentally gives away the information, leading to Gwen calling him an idiot, which lets him figure out it's really her anyways.
  • Juvenile Hell: Gwen-in-Charmcaster's body gets sent to a detention center for teenage girls. It's not too outlandish by juvie standards, but the real issue is the other inmates, who are all too eager to beat up Gwen/Charmcaster for any reason.
  • Kick the Dog: Charmcaster goes out of her way to tell Max that his cooking stinks, something even his own grandkids can't bring themselves to outright say. His reaction is something between confusion and genuine hurt.
    Grandpa Max: It does?
  • Not So Above It All: The first thing Gwen does after realizing she's in Charmcaster's body is to make silly faces in the nearest reflective surface.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: What gets Ben suspicious of Charmcaster-as-Gwen is that she's nice to him, suddenly interested in the Omnitrix, and has angry violent outbursts at being called "freak" (as opposed to being relatively thick-skinned).
  • Snap Back: When Charmcaster first appeared in Tough Luck, her magic was drained away alongside Hex's by the Keystone of Bezel. How her magical powers returned is never explained, nor does anyone bother to question it.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Ben realizes "Charmcaster" is really Gwen when she insults him, something the brown-nosing Charmcaster has been doing to get close to him and the Omnitrix.
  • Teens Are Monsters: The girls in juvie are all thugs who make no effort to be better. Gwen tries asking Missy and Pinky if they're going to go straight after escaping, but no, they want to go right back to what got them arrested in the first place.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: Gwen takes Charmcaster's spell book after she and Ben return to their rightful bodies and knock her out.
  • Voices Are Mental: Played straight when Ben and Gwen swap bodies, but oddly enough averted with Gwen and Charmcaster's body swap, as both characters speak with the body's voice. Cannonbolt gets a more feminine voice when Gwen uses the transformation.
