Recap / Anime Crimes Division S1E3 "The Gundam Killer"

Go To

The ACD investigates a serial killer. A GUNDAM SERIAL KILLER!

"The Gundam Killer" provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Despite being (supposedly) a trained police officer, Furuya opens fire in a crowded underpass in the backstory of "The Gundam Killer". The department takes away his gun for it.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The Serial Killer is revealed to be ACD's Chief, having subtly manipulated Joe into revealing where he kept his Gundam so that he could take its head for his own fanmade Gundam.
  • Broken Pedestal: When Joe finds out that the Chief destroyed his most prized possession because his own love of anime drove him to do it, Joe lays the blame on anime itself as the corrupting force behind it, renounces it and quits the force.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Joe had found the remains of a Gundam years prior, he surmised that it was the work of a Serial Killer, but no one believed him.
Joe: I always said it was a Serial Killer. I said he wasn't done! They didn't believe me. But you do, right Diesel? Do you?!
    Diesel: Yes! Yeah.
Chief: I still don't for what it's worth.
  • Driven to Suicide: When Joe finds his prized Gundam beheaded, he begs Diesel to end his suffering for him.
  • Finger-Tenting: The villain in "The Gundam Killer" does this when gazing at the arrest footage, although his face is not shown. Given Neon Genesis Evangelion is given a Shout-Out just before, it may also be a reference to Gendo Ikari from that series.
  • Genre Savvy: The Chief admits that the reason why he paired Joe with Diesel was that he knew Joe was a Tsundere (a term he actually uses in this context) and that Diesel would make him let his guard down enough to show him where he hid his Gundam.
  • The Gloves Come Off: When Diesel reveals that it was the Chief that destroyed his Gundam, Joe gets out an identical Psycho Pass gun - with the label "This one shoots real bullets" on it - with the intent of killing the Chief with it.
Diesel: Joe, don't do this. We gotta bring this guy in by the book.
Joe: I only have one book on my shelf... and it's Death Note.
  • Idiot Ball: The Chief likely would not have been caught if he hadn't used his own photograph as a profile picture to buy the remaining Gundam pieces. In-fact, just the fact that he was using a personal profile at all - much less with the name "xXx_Chiefaboo_Alucard_xXx" - was pretty dumb, having overlooked the fact that some of his own officers would have thought to look into it.
  • Motive Rant: Chief has no problem explaining his entire plan to Furuya as soon as Furuya bursts in.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Joe quits the force and renounces Anime when he finds out that the Chief's own love of anime turned him into a Serial Killer.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: The reason why Joe isn't allowed to wield a real gun on the job is because when he saw a suspect that might have been the Gundam killer, he fired his gun wildly to the point where the perp got away because he was so busy shooting at nothing. No one was hurt, but it was so ridiculous that he has been using an airsoft gun ever since.
  • Serious Business: The destruction of Gundam models and toys are treated like murder.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Diesel throws up when she sees the dismembered remains of the first gundam.
  • You're Insane!: Said by Joe in "The Gundam Killer" once he sees the Chief's cobbled-together Gundam.
