Recap / American Dad S 12 E 2 CIA Pow

Go To

Stan, Jackson, Dick, and Hooper are on a mission to Thailand to destroy a terrorist weapons cache when a CIA drone beats them to it. Fearing Bullock will replace them with machines, they hatch a plot to steal the king's diamond-encrusted inhalator to prove that there are some things that drones can't do, which quickly goes wrong.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Smith family wastes time by running a slow-motion race across the living room.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Bullock's conversion into a machine has similarities to Picard's conversion into a borg.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: The interrogator has a bunch of yaks with punny names. Under truth serum, Stan admits they are the best yak names he has ever heard.
  • Brick Joke: At the start of the episode we see Bullock having his arm replaced with a prosthetic, stating his desire to become a full machine. At the end of the episode, he busts into the detention center as a large cyborg.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Dick can't figure out how to take a picture with his phone. He believes this is the real reason why his wife and son left him. Somehow, he is able to crash a security computer by doing things that would normally take internet access.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Hooper believes that as Burger King is an American company, it is technically US soil; they can claim asylum there. The clerk, who, by his own admission, is poorly educated, stated that even he knows that isn't how it works.
  • Mugged for Disguise: The agents knock out several guards to steal their uniforms. They knock out so many just to find the right sizes that they consider the disguises are no longer necessary.
  • Never My Fault: Stan blames the others for the improvised mission going badly, ignoring his own faults in the matter. It isn't until the interrogator injects Stan with truth serum and points out that he left their hotel information behind that he admits it was his fault.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The agents dress as guards in ill-fitting uniforms and they are still white guys in Thailand.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In the red light district, a woman asks if Stan and the group want to enter her secret tunnel. Mistaking her for solicitation, they abandon the vehicle and run off. She was actually talking about a hidden underground tunnel that leads out of the city, which would have allowed them to avoid capture.
  • Shout-Out: After they are captured, the agents try to copy the plot of Argo and pretend to be making a film. Unfortunately, the interrogator had also seen Argo and asked to contact their studio, which is just the local Burger King.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The agents all waste time on different hobbies, but even after they are captured and escape, Stan decides they should go back for the inhalator, resulting in their capture again.
