Recap / Aladdin S 2 E 11 Sneeze The Day

Go To

Chasing Amin Damoola through the streets of Agrabah leads to Genie getting covered in guava juice - which genies are allergic to! The resulting magical cold causes disaster every time Genie sneezes, so Aladdin and Iago must find the Orb of Machana in order to cure him.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Caretaker Reversal: After an entire episode spent trying to cure Genie's cold, Aladdin comes down with one himself and Genie, now well again, assumes the caretaker role.
  • Derailed Train of Thought: Iago starts to explain how he knows about the Orb of Machana, but gets sidetracked reminiscing about the seaside village he was at until Aladdin interrupts.
  • Exact Words:
    • Aladdin insists on going to find the cure for Genie's cold, but Iago refuses, as said cure is held in a very dangerous place from which nobody has successfuly returned:
Aladdin: (kindly) Iago, you know I'd never ask you to do anything dangerous.
      Iago: (perking up) Really?
Aladdin: (grabs Iago by his tail feathers) So I won't ask.
    • How Aladdin manages to beat the first of the three trials, which is to "stick out your tongue and touch your forehead". Machana apparently meant "touch your forehead with your tongue", but failed to specify, so Aladdin uses his index finger instead.
  • Face Palm: Machana does this after Aladdin successfully sticks his tongue out and touches his forehead (with one finger).
  • Find the Cure!: Genie ends up falling sick with a magical cold that causes chaos every time he sneezes, so Aladdin and Iago must find the Orb of Machana, the one thing that can cure a sick genie.
  • Foot Bath Treatment: At one point, Genie is seen with his feet in a bucket of hot water.
  • Green Around the Gills: Genie's normally light blue skin turns a shade of pale green to show his illness.
  • Illness Blanket: Genie ends up wearing one of these while sick.
  • Mythology Gag: The opening scene of the film is a beat-for-beat copy of Aladdin's first appearance in the original film, except with Amin Damoola being chased by our heroes over a diamond. Also, Amin's escape attempt is foiled by Genie.
  • No Sympathy: Iago accuses Genie of milking his cold for sympathy while showing none himself.
  • Not Rare Over There: After Aladdin completes the trials, Machana goes to a chamber and retrieves the Orb... from among thousands of identical orbs. Machana complains that at this rate he'll never be able to get rid of them all.
  • Panacea: The Orb of Machana is a magical cure-all for genies and the only thing that can heal then if they fall sick.
  • Power Incontinence: When genies get colds, they can't control their powers. Thus, every time Genie sneezes, it causes things to appear or change at random, which threatens to get worse the longer the cold goes on.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a pun on the phrase "seize the day."
  • Rule of Three: Obtaining the Orb of Machana requires passing three difficult tests.
  • Saying Too Much: Iago casually mentions the Orb of Machana without thinking, then panics and tries to cover himself. He quickly changes his mind, however, when Aladdin threatens him with a Genie sneeze.
  • Sneeze of Doom: Genie's powers go out of control every time he sneezes, causing chaos that ranges from random (balloons and kittens) to actually dangerous (flying swords and missile silos).
  • The Man Behind the Curtain: Machana's three forms turn out to be giant steam-powered machines controlled by the real Machana, who is no bigger than a bug.
  • Time Dissonance: Genie casually states that genie colds last a century or two at most, twenty-four years at best. When Aladdin and Jasmine are shocked by this, he asks if a hundred years is supposed to be a long time for humans.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Machana appears to be this, as he takes on three forms throughout the episode - a crocodile-headed human, a skull-headed spider and a griffin. It's revealed at the end that these are mechanical bodies controlled by the real Machana.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Guava juice for genies - it's the only thing that can make them sick.
