Finn and Jake discover a conspiracy after infiltrating the ranks of the Banana Guard.

Tropes:

  • Continuity Nod:
    • Among the stories Banana Guard 16 says of Princess Bubblegum are the events of "Rattleballs" and "Bonnie and Neddy".
    • A poster for "Summer Showers" appears on a wall.
  • The Dreaded: The Banana Guard both love and fear Princess Bubblegum. They keep their talents hidden from her in fear that they will displease her and she will exact horrible vengeance upon them.
  • Foreshadowing: When Banana Guard 16 is talking about the things that make Princess Bubblegum feared, an older man resembling her is shown in a jail cell when 16 says she "turned [rebels] into hideous monsters. That man would be revealed in Season 8 to be her Uncle Gumbald, who tried to usurp her using Dum Dum Juice, but she stopped him and it splashed him instead, turning him into Punchy the Punch Bowl.
  • I Am Spartacus: The other Banana Guards claim to be Banana Guard 16 to protect him from Princess Bubblegum's wrath. Subverted when 16 steps up and identifies himself anyway.
  • Individuality Is Illegal: Banana Guard 16 fears that doing anything to stand out will result in Bubblegum dissecting him to figure out why, and he's not alone.
  • Metaphorically True: All of the things that Banana Guard 16 says Princess Bubblegum did technically happened, but in a much more mundane or benign light than he described.
    • The "rebels" that were turned into "hideous monsters" were her original family: Gumbald, Lolly, and Chicle. Gumbald however was the one who changed Lolly and Chicle, using the Dum Dum Juice to turn them into Manfried and Crunchy respectively, and tried to usurp Bonnibel, but she stopped him and the Juice splashed him instead, turning him into Punchy.
    • While her brother Neddy is beneath the Candy Kingdom's Great Tree, she didn't "imprison" him, rather she keeps him there since suckling on the tree roots is the only thing that keeps him calm, and going anywhere else or being visited by anyone would send him into a panic attack, hence locking the door.
    • While she did decommission the Rattleballs, she only did so after they began fighting recreationally and proved too dangerous to keep active, with one managing to escape and, in atonement, she now employs as the Kingdom's shadow protector.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: When chased by Finn and Jake, Banana Guard 16 loses them by hiding in a group of other Banana Guards.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Downplayed. The Banana Guards are shown to possess many talents that they kept hidden out of fear of Princess Bubblegum, with some of them being pretty difficult like growing produce with hydroponics or expertly playing the trumpet, suggesting they're not entirely stupid. They still lack basic common sense a lot of the time, and their behavior is more reminiscent of idiot savants.
  • Old Shame: When asking the Banana Guards to stop worshipping her, Bubblegum admits to feeling ashamed of some of her past actions, implicitly her more draconian and dictator like behavior.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Finn's Banana costume leaves his face, arms and feet highly visible. Jake just shapes himself like a Banana Guard but is still recognizable.
  • Stop Worshipping Me: Princess Bubblegum's experience while deposed has made her realize her arrogance, and she makes an effort to address the Banana Guards as a person and not some figure on a pedestal.
