"Pulling a couple of the band-aids from the box, Mari couldn't help but feel that "pink" had been something of an understatement. They were aggressively pink, so much so that it made the bottle of hair dye Aubrey had been desperately wishing for look downright dull by comparison. Sunny stared at the neon cotton candy nightmare in her hands with a look of... she couldn't tell if it was fascination or horror. Possibly both. She didn't blame him, she was feeling similarly. There was no way that color naturally existed. Were these radioactive?"

    Literature
"All the orchard trees blossomed forth in strange colours, and through the stony soil of the yard and adjacent pasturage there sprang up a bizarre growth which only a botanist could connect with the proper flora of the region. No sane wholesome colours were anywhere to be seen except in the green grass and leafage; but everywhere those hectic and prismatic variants of some diseased, underlying primary tone without a place among the known tints of earth."

Where it wasn't black you were inclined to wish that it was because the colors with which some of the unspeakable details were picked out ranged horribly across the whole spectrum of eye defying colors, from Ultra Violent, to Infra Dead, taking in Liver Purple, Loathsome Lilac, Matter Yellow, Burnt Hombre, and Gan Green on the way.

Tahani: By the way, uh, what's your favorite color for the tablecloths?
Michael: Well, it's not perceptible by human eyes. It's called pleurigloss.
Tahani: Could you... describe it?
Michael: It's the color of... when a soldier comes home from war and sees his dog for the first time.
Tahani: Hm. How 'bout blue?

At this point most of us learn the basics of the electromagnetic spectrum somewhere in middle school. You got that little zone of visible light and then a huge amount of radiation our eyes can't perceive, from gamma rays up through radio waves. Since we can only see such a thin slice of the spectrum, our concept of color is very limited compared to the full spectrum of light, but it's kind of what we're stuck with. But if you told Lovecraft about the wide spectrum of light humans can't see, he'd get a funny look on his face, say something like "You mean there exist colors that man has never seen? What might they be capable of?" (Scare Chord), and go write "The Color Out of Space", a story about a color of demonstrably visible light that is nonetheless nowhere on the visible spectrum. This is what happens when you don't have the constitution for math."
