Playing With / Poison and Cure Gambit

Go To

Basic Trope: A character poisons someone and is only willing to give them the antidote if they fulfil some demand.

  • Straight: Dracone poisons Marcy and tells her that he'll give her the antidote if she gives him her Chaos Diamond.
  • Exaggerated: The Big Bad creates a deadly and highly contagious virus. He makes one requirement to every victim explaining in detail what they have to do before he'll supply the cure.
  • Downplayed: The Big Bad is holding Marcy's friends hostage. Marcy has a Healing Factor and would gradually overcome the poison on her own; but it will slow her down enough that she won't be able to save the hostages in time. Dracone has his own plans for The Empire and exploits Marcy's Chronic Hero Syndrome, offering her the antidote in exchange for the Chaos Diamond.
  • Justified:
    • Dracone believes that Marcy is a Dirty Coward that will happily surrender the diamond and let its power fall into wrong hands if it means that she'll live.
    • Dracone and Marcy aren't mortal enemies, so that's why he plans to give her an actual antidote.
    • The Chaos Diamond is some sort of Empathic Weapon, and its powers can only be transferred to Dracone if Marcy willingly gives them to him.
  • Inverted:
    • Marcy suggests that she give him the diamond in exchange for the antidote.
    • Marcy wants to commit suicide. Dracone offers to poison her in exchange for the diamond.
    • Dracone is poisoned and has the antidote. Hoping to appeal to Marcy's sympathy, he tells her that he'll just let the poison kill him unless she gives him the diamond.
  • Subverted:
    • Dracone poisons Marcy, then tells her he isn't going to give her the antidote. He only brought it to taunt her.
    • Dracone never poisoned Marcy at all: the offered "antidote" is the poison, to clean up loose ends.
  • Double Subverted: Then Marcy suggests a deal, which Dracone may or may not agree to.
  • Parodied:
    • The antidote Dracone offers is common, cheap, effective, and easily accessible. The poisoning kills in two months and is fully reversible as long as the victim is alive.
    • Dracone poisons Marcy with a weird potion. All it does is giving her dangerous powers over fire. Dracone tells her that she can have the antidote in exchange for the diamond. However, it takes about two seconds before Marcy manages to control the powers and decides that she's Cursed with Awesome. Dracone tries changing the deal into "if you don't give me the diamond, I'll force you to take the antidote", but he quickly finds himself roasted.
    • Dracone poisons Marcy over something trivial like extorting her to buy milk for him because he's too lazy. Marcy is also too lazy to buy milk, and makes complex plans to steal the antidote instead.
    • Dracone and Marcy haggle, parodying Pawn Stars too:
Dracone: Give me the Chaos Diamond, and I'll give you the antidote.
Marcy: That's not going to happen. I'll give you like 5 coins for it.
Dracone: That's ridiculous. You need 100 coins for an extra life. I want to have the diamond for at least a week.
Marcy: 7 coins then. The market for antidotes isn't that big.
Dracone: Market?! You'll die if you don't accept the offer!
Marcy: The problem is that I may die even if I accept the offer because I have no way of knowing whether it's real. Do you mind if I bring my friend to have a look at it? He's an expert in antidotes.
    • It turns out that Dracone forgot to poison Marcy.
  • Zig Zagged: Dracone has poisoned Marcy, but he says he will give her the antidote if she gives him the diamond. Marcy reluctantly accepts and gives him the Chaos Diamond. But when she asks him to give her the antidote Dracone starts laughing and says he was bluffing and doesn't even have the antidote. Marcy tries to find an antidote herself and discovers that the Chaos Diamond is the antidote. After her discovery Marcy tries to trade the Chaos Pearl for the Chaos Diamond. Dracone comes to get the pearl, but is unwilling to give the Chaos Diamond. But the second deal was a trick from Marcy. She steals the Chaos Diamond and cures herself.
  • Averted: When Dracone poisons Marcy, he just wants to kill her.
  • Enforced: "We need to show how dirty Dracone is. Maybe we can have him using bla-, I mean, extortion."
  • Lampshaded: "Looks like Dracone is using his poisons for extortion again."
  • Invoked: Someone suggests this to Dracone because he happens to have a deadly poison and its antidote.
  • Exploited:
    • Dracone plans to give Marcy a fake antidote. If Marcy falls for the deal, he'll end up with both having the diamond and his enemy being dead. If she doesn't, she'll still die.
    • Marcy plans to give Dracone a fake diamond, hoping he won't find out before it's too late.
    • Both of the above.
  • Defied:
    • "I'll never let you have the diamond, even if it costs me my life!"
    • Marcy avoids being poisoned.
  • Discussed: "Now that you've poisoned me, are you going to extort me?"
  • Conversed: "It's funny how the villains poison heroes and blackmail them into working for them to get the antidote. Why don't they use fake antidotes? Aren't they really eager to see the heroes dead?"
  • Deconstructed: Marcy considers the possibility that the "antidote" is just more poison and so Dracone provides proof. Then he repeats his demand.

Go back to Poison and Cure Gambit, and I'll give you the antidote.
What do you mean "When did I poison you?" It was when you followed the link here, of course.
