Basic Trope: Everyone or everything has the same name.

  • Straight: All characters from Steveland are named "Steve".
  • Exaggerated: Every person, place, and thing in the world uses the name "Steve".
  • Downplayed:
    • Occasional minor characters share names and are referred to by full name for clarity, or their first names are the same but their last names are different.
    • Identically Named Group
  • Justified: "Steve" is a highly popular name in Steveland or the Stevelander culture doesn't require a distinctive name when they refer to each other.
  • Inverted: One-Steve Limit
  • Subverted:
    • There are multiple Steves, but all mentions of them are deliberately misleading; the reader doesn't discover until later that they have distinctive names.
    • There are multiple Steves in the setting. But they are actually imposters.
    • First of all, it's not Steveland, but Tropestan. Second "Steef" is the Tropestanian masculine formal form of address (or "Sir" in English). note
  • Double Subverted:
    • But later they change their names to Steve as well.
    • Those imposters are also named "Steve", it's just that they were taking last names.
    • Ah, to hell with it. After an uprising by a gang of Steves, they turn Tropestan into Steveland and make "Steef" an actual name.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged:
    • Some locations have more people with similar given names than others.
    • Some Steves have the forename Steven or Stephen, others have it as a middle name but use it because they prefer it to their first given names.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced:
    • To create a Running Gag of the series.
    • The Steves are minor characters, so the creator doesn't need to give too many details about them.
  • Lampshaded: "Why EVERYONE in Steveland is named Steve?"
  • Invoked:
    • There are Steve and James at first, but James changes his name to Steve in order to mimic his friend.
    • The law requires everyone to use the name "Steve".
  • Exploited: Steve uses the advantage of an identical name to commit a crime and easily get away from it by moving to Steveland because if he is caught by his name, the detective won't know which Steve is.
  • Defied:
    • To avoid massive confusion, The Steves change their names to more distinctive ones.
    • Steve suggests James and Mike change their name to Steve like him, but both refuse to adopt a new name.
    • The law allows everyone to use highly distinctive names.
  • Discussed:
Mike: Do all your friends have different first names?
James: No. All of my friends are Steves.
  • Conversed: "Ah, Steve again? don't the Stevelanders have any other names?"
  • Deconstructed: The demand for identical naming gains disastrous confusion in government services when they need to specify individuals, like birth certificates or driver's licenses.
  • Reconstructed: The Steves live in a small town and refer to each other by unique identifiers like "Redhead Steve No.12" or "Pizza Maker Steve", so there's no confusion.
  • Implied: Mike is new in the small town where the story is set, but he has trouble using the name to find his friend, Steve, even though he knows every single distinctive trait of his friend.
  • Played for Laughs: Mike loudly calls Steve at the local diner, but turns out everyone here has the name Steve, and they keep chasing Mike!
  • Played for Drama: James, the citizen of Steveland, is frequently bullied because he is the only one who doesn't use the name "Steve" like everyone else.

Alright, all Steves, let's return to our Planet of Steves!
