Go To

Basic Trope: A character enjoys something most people think is horribly boring.

  • Straight: When Fun Frank and Exciting Evelyn asks her if she wants to go to a party they're having, Boring Belinda replies, "No, I can't, I'm going to do something fun. I'm going to practise for the maths test next week."
  • Exaggerated:
    • Belinda gets sexually aroused from doing math equations.
    • Belinda enjoys watching grass grow.
  • Downplayed: Belinda is going to watch an educational show.
  • Justified:
    • Belinda has a genuine interest in mathematics.
    • Belinda wants simple relaxing fun, not the exciting energetic kind most associate with the word.
  • Inverted:
    • Belinda is the only character that enjoys parties. Everyone else thinks school and schoolwork is great entertainment.
    • Belinda hates parties and other things most people enjoy.
  • Subverted:
Evelyn: Do you want to party?
Belinda: I'm already planning to do something fun today.
Frank: Let me guess. You're going to do your History homework.
Belinda: Don't be silly. Do you think I enjoy something that boring?
  • Double Subverted:
    Belinda: It's Maths I like.
  • Parodied: Belinda finds a TV show that she enjoys. She gets angry when she learns that only one episode was made and it was made to be as boring as possible because it's a Take That! to boring shows.
  • Zig-Zagged: Belinda throws herself into her homework, but she has a short attention span, so she gets distracted and goes to the party. But she expects she'll get bored with it before too long, and she does have some sense of responsibility, so she brings her homework with her.
  • Averted: Her great marks notwithstanding, Belinda has at least one "normal", non-boring interest.
  • Enforced: "We don't want Belinda's personality to be more exciting than the main characters'. How can we make her more boring?"
  • Lampshaded: "Does Belinda have any interest that doesn't bore a normal teenager?"
  • Invoked: Belinda wants Bob to dump her because he's a crappy boyfriend, so she presents herself as the lamest, most boring human being in the history of the world in order to force him to do it. Because Everybody Hates Mathematics, and Bob doubly so, she tells him that she loves to practice math when she's bored.
  • Exploited:
    • Belinda's classmates have her do their homework. Belinda doesn't care that it's cheating because she enjoys it.
    • It turns out that Belinda enjoys boring housework. Belinda's parents make her do the work.
  • Defied: Belinda realizes that she has "strange" interests and tries new leisure activities until she finds one that she likes and that her peers don't think is boring.
  • Discussed: "Belinda has really good marks. I'll bet she enjoys homework."
  • Conversed: "Seriously, who enjoys watching grass grow?"
  • Implied: During a random conversation about what the cast likes to do to entertain themselves, one of the characters asks Evelyn what Belinda likes to do (because she's not there). The Beat as Evelyn stays quiet whether trying to think of a good answer or hoping it will help her dodge the question lasts forever, and she makes a face best described as "I got so bored that I wanted to kill myself back then" all the while.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Because Belinda only wants to do things everyone else considers boring, nobody wants to be together with her.
    • When Belinda is questioned about why she would rather do maths, she gives an easy-to-understand answer about what about the subject interests mathematicians enough to go into their field. It's left to the audience's judgement whether she's still being an unreasonable bore.
  • Reconstructed:
    • But she makes friends when she finds out she can do some of their boring tasks for them.
    • Even if her explanation genuinely catches Frank and Evelyn's attention, and they concede that maths can be fun to some people, they still aren't happy with Belinda dismissing their party — an event that only happens occasionally — for something that she could do at any time.
  • Played for Laughs: Belinda is The Comically Serious, and this is further proof.
  • Played for Drama: Belinda's parents don't allow her to do anything fun, so she fools herself into thinking the boring things she's allowed/forced to do are fun.
  • Played for Horror:
    • A level of unfun this severe (or this abruptly severe) is a sign of brutal mental trauma or Belinda having become The Soulless.
    • Belinda actually does enjoy watching paint dry because she can witness the paint drying in incredible detail. Any normal activity causes excruciating sensory overlord.
