     Balto I
  • Near the beginning of the movie, Steele and his gang are making fun of Balto's mother. Balto full blown gets angry, even growling unlike any other time in the movie. Considering Balto is a Nice Guy Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold, seeing him get incredibly angry is alarming, probably an example of Beware the Nice Ones.
  • It was diphtheria that the kids had. Diphtheria is actually pretty scary.
    • To elaborate, one of the telltale symptoms of diphtheria is a thick gray coating (in reality the tissue killed by the bacteria) in the throat and nose along with lesions. This coating builds and builds, leading to difficulty breathing and the disease's nickname "The Strangler"... if that didn't kill you, the toxin could travel through the bloodstream, shutting down your major organs. Until the development of the serum and the DPT vaccine, it was an almost always fatal disease.
  • The closeup of the coffins the carpenter is building for the kids.
  • The fight with the giant grizzly is actually pretty violent.
    • The grizzly itself. Imagine a giant violent bear that is drawn in shadow with pupilless yellow eyes, built like a friggin' tank and able to freely walk on two legs (unlike in real life). The only reason it didn't kill Balto was due to Jenna's rescue and the untimely shattering of the ice.
  • The bear fight leads right to Balto being trapped under the ice and in danger of drowning, forcing Muk and Luk to jump in to save him.
    • While under the water, they see Balto clinging to the ice, desperately trying to suck on trapped bubbles for oxygen.
    • Jenna sees him through the ice and tries to use her claws to break it open to no avail, and gives a Big "NO!" when he floats away. All she and Boris can do is wait anxiously until the bear cubs save him.
  • Steele after his Villainous Breakdown. He goes feral and completely insane. His breakdown is almost as scary as Ratigan's!
Steele: Touch that box...and I'll tear you apart!
    • And then there's him trying to sabotage the team's efforts to get the much needed medicine delivered to the sick children, by making them lose their way back to the village. That alone proves that he does not give a single damn about the children dying!
Steele: (feral) Go ahead, wolf-dog! You'll never get home! I'll make sure of THAT!
  • The almost ethereal white wolf showing up out of nowhere after Balto falls off a cliff, until you realize it's there for another reason.
  • In 2018, a Deleted Scene was discovered involving Steele's original fate. note Instead of simply being abandoned by the other dogs, he got his collar snagged on a lever, before being hanged and falling into a coal pit, with his choking facial expressions being shown in graphic detail in the storyboards. It's also suggested that coal may have fallen on him and buried him alive. As much as Steele deserved it, it's easy to see why it was cut.
  • The scene with the team trying to outrun falling icicles in a cave. At one point Balto looks back and is horrified to discover that the fragile antitoxin crate has deteriorated to the point where the bottles are in danger of falling out...and one does.

    Balto II: Wolf Quest
  • Within the first 15 minutes of the film, Aleu is nearly killed by a hunter she mistakes as a friendly human, who nearly shoots her point blank for looking like a wolf if not for Balto saving her at the last second. Suffice to say, this act traumatizes her for the rest of the film and fuels her self-loathing.
  • Balto undergoes a spiritual journey, which includes disturbing taunting red-eyed wolverines who disappear in thin air.
  • The mysterious demonic bear Aleu encounters in the cave. It's not remotely natural and waits until Aleu gets close enough to try and kill her before trying to hunt her down.
  • While trying to help Nava, Aleu is nearly crushed between two blocks of ice and has to dive underwater to avoid them. She then swims through an underwater cave, and at one point gets stuck in a crevice and has to squeeze her way through to get back to the surface. It may not be that scary of a scene, but it is tense, aided by suspenseful music and sound effects like Aleu grunting underwater.
