The value of a moment is a Voltron: Legendary Defender fanfic created by AFoolsErrand based on the Arrival.
It features Lance, whose skills with languages finally come to play on a mission. Things start going strange and time blurred.
Tropes include:
- Ambiguous Ending: Lance's future. It is implied he married Keith but it is never explicit.
Word of God is that the Heptapods made the future visions deliberately ambiguous for Lance's sake.
- Dreaming of Things to Come: Lance. He starts dreaming of a little girl and spacing out. He even tells Keith that they should turn left and as it turns out there were sentries on the right. Giving futures of the near future is one of the ways the aliens communicate.
- Language Barrier: A major one between humanity and the aliens who speak a Starfish Language. Lance tries to overcome the barrier with both visual aids, speech and body language.
- Shout-Out:
- The entire plot is a Whole-Plot Reference to Arrival.
- Bert and Ernie the two names Lance gives to the heptapods share the same names from the characters in Sesame Street.
- This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Justified As Lance's abilities in this case that need use is linguistics and he is the only available and the best for the task considering his experience with languages at the Garrison, even getting a scholarship for it and because the Blades lack one for use. Later when discussing candidates, Kolivan mentions the close-knit ranks and bond of Voltron, meaning the likelihood of a traitor is negligible compared to an outsider or possible candidates on the Voltron Coalition even those sworn to secrecy considering the secretive nature of the mission.
