Go To

September 1st, 1994. Late in the night, in the outskirts of a Oregonian small town, a group of middle schoolers experience a life changing event involving extra-terrestrials and the disappearance of one of their friends, forever destroying their friend group.

June 3rd, 1994, mere months before. The last day of school, and when everything changed.

The Lights In The Sky is an Alternate Universe Real-Person Fic by MySweetEverything. Taking Nine Inch Nails, How to Destroy Angels, Filter, and Tori Amos, the author remixes them into teenagers living in a middle of nowhere town during the 1990s as they discover life outside of Earth - for better or worse.

The story is currently a work in progress.

This work contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Age Lift: The principle cast are all in their early teens in this universe, while in real life only one person (Mariqueen Maandig) would have been thirteen in 1994.
  • Alien Abduction: Happened at some point to Mariqueen and Trent as shown in the prologue. Mariqueen was brought back somehow. Trent wasn't so lucky.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: All over the place here:
    • All of the characters are in the same age group, while in real life they have birth years ranging from 1963 (Tori) to to 1981 (Mariqueen).
    • In real life, none of the musicians are from the pacific northwest. In the fic, all of them aside from Mariqueen and Atticus are Oregon natives.
  • Detention Episode: The second chapter begins in detention on the last day of school, with Trent there for getting in a fight with some athletes (who got off scott free), and Mariqueen there for smoking pot on school grounds. Luckily for them, Robin breaks them both out.
  • Girl Next Door: Mariqueen is a literal example being Trent's neighbor and crush.
  • The Men in Black: Richard, Robin, and Danny run into one in the prologue, and it's highly implied that in addition to destroying their camera of the alien ship, he (or whoever he works for) destroyed the clubhouse.
  • Puppy Love: Middle schoolers Trent and Mariqueen both have obvious crushes on each other (even if Trent's a little dense about it). She clearly had a crush on him the first day they met when they were eleven.
  • Skyward Scream: Mariqueen in the prologue after she remembers what happened to her during her abduction.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Of the initial friend group, Tori is the sole female friend.
