The Doctor has had many unfortunate incidents throughout his life. But none of his interactions have been more “colorful” than his acquaintanceship with Rick Sanchez. Can he perhaps pull the nihilistic scientist toward a more positive outlook? He’ll at least give it the old college try.
’’The Deconstruction of Rick’’ contains the following examples:
- But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Rick views the destruction of a few quintillion worlds as nothing more than old news.
- The Dreaded: Rick’s fearsome reputation haunts Morty, who fearfully begs the Doctor not to bother the old man.
- Misery Builds Character: The Doctor has endured countless affronts, but he sees those affronts as opportunities to improve himself, while Rick’s attempts to block out the pain rather than learn from him have turned him into a broken trainwreck of a man.
- "Not So Different" Remark: When the Doctor admonishes Rick for destroying countless worlds, Rick throws back the Doctor’s own history of civilizational destruction.
- Not So Similar: While the Doctor admits that he hates authority as much as Rick, the Doctor tries to help people enjoy the wonders of the universe, while Rick is a nihilistic who shows his grandchildren the worst sides of the universe.
- Terrorist Without A Cause: Played for Drama. Rick Sanchez insists he’s a freedom fighter against an oppressive system, while the Doctor spells out to him that Rick hates answering to ‘’any’’ kind of authority.
