Awakening of the Sapphire Dragon
is a High School D×D fanfiction story by spiralgamer on FanFiction.Net.
The story follows Luke Sigmund, a 15-year-old Ordinary High-School Student... who just happens to be the half-brother of Human-Devil Hybrid Seth, as well as the first host of the Sapphire Dragon Emperor, Opheria.
A spinoff titled Sapphire Dragon Alter was released on November 19, 2023. It take place in the Alternate Timeline briefly explored in Chapters 49 and 50.
Awakening of the Sapphire Dragon contains the following tropes:
- Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
- Instead of becoming Rias' servants, Issei and Asia become the servants of Melody Morag.
- While Grayfia is still Sirzechs' Queen, here she is NOT Millicas' mother. Instead, his mother is a member of the Asmodeus family, a fact kept secret from the general public.
- Adaptational Early Appearance: In Chapter 23, an Evie scout appears and attacks Luke, Issei, Pyra, and Xenovia. Keep in mind that the chapter takes place around the time of Volume 4.
- Adaptational Heroism: Loki, so far, fully supports Odin and the alliance with the other mythologies.
- Age Lift: In DxD canon Kunou is a first-year middle school student (as of Volume 22) making her around 12 or 13 when first introduced. Here, she's described as being around Luke's age when she's introduced in Chapter 57.
- Alternate Timeline: Luke is briefly taken to one in Chapter 49 due to Azazel and Karlel's experiment. It's later explored in full in the spinoff fic Sapphire Dragon Alter.
- Chick Magnet: Luke, due to a combination of having a dragon Sacrad Gear and being half Kaelian.
- Crossover: While the fic is mainly an AU, the author imports characters from other settings and tweaks their powers and backstories to make them fit with the DxD universe. They include:
- Pyra and Mythra are the most prominent examples, being from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Nia also briefly appears.
- Thor and Loki are basically the ones from Fire Emblem Heroes.
- Several of the additions to the Hero Faction introduced in Chapter 59 are from Fate/Grand Order with one (Hoshiguma) being from Arknights. There is also Ethel from Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but she turns out to be a Double Agent and part of SLASH/DOG.
- Fourth-Date Marriage: Despite having only met just two days earlier, Luke and Kunou quickly agree to get engaged. Yasaka supports this while also gets engaged to Luke, even though they only met the previous day.
- Gender Flip:
- Both Thor and Loki are women in the fic. Though there is a basis for why Loki is female (while Loki in Norse myth is described as male, Loki has famously shapeshifted into female often and even gotten pregnant).
- Xuanzang Sanzang is a man in both canon DxD and Journey to the West (where he's called Tang Sanzang). Here, Xuanzang is a woman like in Fate/Grand Order.
- Half-Human Hybrid: Aside from the canon examples, there are a few.
- There's Seth Sigmund, Luke's older half-brother, his father being a devil of the Morag clan.
- Katherine Petrova is a Dhampir, like Gasper.
- Luke is eventually revealed to be half Kaelian.
- As it turns out, Misaki Shirayuki is half human, half kitsune.
- Living Weapon: The Aegis, Pyra, is one. Others are introduced later, called Regalia.
- Polyamory: It's a High School D×D fic, so it's kinda expected.
- Luke's Harem: Rias Gremory, Pyra/Mythra, Karlel, Daphiel, Annabelle Wright, Akeno Himejima, Fumiko Kazuya, Rossweisse, Koneko Toujo, Kuroka, Melody Morag, Setsuna Kazama, Kayoko Kita, Xenovia Quarta, Emery Belmont, Roygun Belphegor, Belinda Green, Morgana Merlina Evergarden, Katherine Petrova, Ayin Kaos Lucifer, Serafall Leviathan, Freyja, Mitsumi Iori, Sora Mikazuchi, Kunou, and Yasaka.
