    The Stranger
The protagonist of the game. He is tasked by the Priest to go round up the surviving villagers and shelter them within the church.
  • The Dragon: In the Bad Ending, he becomes the Fog's new servant, feeding it victims.
  • Featureless Protagonist: He is faceless and never speaks.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In the Standard Ending, he successfully gets everyone to the church to protect them from the Fog... except the Priest is actually a demon in disguise, who has now got everyone trapped inside the church, ready to be fed to the Fog.
  • Villain Protagonist: The Stranger can potentially become this if, instead of sheltering the townspeople inside the church or the well, he feeds them to the Fog. He will end up replacing the Priest as the Fog's servant.

    The Priest
Greetings Stranger. I found you on the outskirts of town near The Fog. I shouldn't have to tell you this: it's dangerous to go into The Fog. I have tried to lead the villagers to safety within these walls. Perhaps you could assist me.

The priest who runs the church and rescued the Stranger. He has you rescue the villagers and bring them to his church.

  • Bad Habits: It turns out he's a demon disguised as a human priest, intending to trick the Stranger into gathering the townspeople into the church so his master can eat them all.
  • The Dragon: He is the Fog's servant, who feeds it victims.
  • Treacherous Advisor: The Priest rescues the Stranger from The Fog and tells him to shelter the townspeople inside the church to protect them. Should the stranger do so, the Priest reveals himself to be a demon who serves the Fog and was getting everyone in one place so the Fog may eat them.

    The Townspeople
The people of the village. Only five are still living- the Woodsman, the Farmer, the Little Girl, the Shopkeeper, and the Doctor. They refuse to go with you unless you get them something they need, and will not go with you if there is someone following you.
  • Skewed Priorities: Despite there being a Fog of Doom surrounding them and about to eat them all, they refuse to go with you to safety unless you give them some trivial item, like the Woodsman's axe or money to buy the Shopkeeper's stock. The only exception is the Farmer who wants his goats back- but only so he can leave them behind and "teach them" what it's like to be abandoned.

    The Fog
The antagonist of the game, it is a malevolent fog that envelops the town and seeks to devour everyone who lives there.
  • Big Bad: It is the entity threatening to eat the townspeople.
  • Fog of Doom: It is a sentient, demonic fog that eats people.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: It has no lines or character; it's just a fog that eats people, literally more of a force of nature than an actual character. Its servant, the Priest, is The Heavy who gets actual lines.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: It uses these to grab the Priest in the Bad and Secret endings to eat him.
  • To Serve Man: It wants to eat the townspeople.
  • You Have Failed Me: In the Bad Ending, when the Stranger feeds the townspeople to it, it decides to eat its servant, the Priest, for failing his job.
