Twelve years old; the lead protagonist.
- Cry into Chest: Does this to Sara after learning that Charlie is dead.

Holden
Fourteen years old; Fern's older brother and the secondary protagonist.
- Coming-Out Story: For the majority of the first half of the book, Fern is trying to talk him in coming out. It's not until after Charlie's funeral that he finally explodes and yells it for all to hear.
- Dating What Daddy Hates: His father doesn't approve of his relationship with Gray, but he doesn't care.

- May–December Romance: Downplayed. He is fourteen, while Gray is seventeen.
Sara
Eighteen years old; Fern's older sister.
