    Homura Akemi

Homura has travelled back through time again and again, hoping to succeed in preventing Madoka's death as a magical girl or turning into a Witch. Her latest attempt has her spontaneously decide to grab hold of Madoka, taking her along when travelling back to the day Homura transferred to Mitakihara Middle School.

  • Cassandra Truth: Discussed. Kyoko asks her why she didn't just tell her she was from the future, only for Homura to say she's already tried and no one believed her.
  • Dual Boss: Ends up having to fight against Sayaka and Kyoko at the same time, as they've teamed up specifically to fight her.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted to pull one as a last-ditch attack against Walpurgisnacht, but Kyoko stopped her and talked her out of using such a desperation attack.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames herself for taking Madoka along on a time-loop, and only achieving to cause her more grief than in the previous timeline.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Kyoko snaps at Homura for not just telling them that she came from the future, so she could prevent Mami and Sayaka dying. But Homura bluntly tells her that she did in previous time-loops, and that none of those times ever worked out in anyone's favor because nobody believed her.

    Madoka Kaname

Madoka was taken along back through time because of Homura's powers, leading her to remember the events of the last timeline. She intends to do her best to follow along the previous path, so that she and Homura can prevent the deaths of their friends this time around.

  • Doomed by Canon: As one of Homura's past timelines, there's no chance she won't either die or turn into a witch. She does end up contracting, though she manages to not immediately become Gretchen.
  • The Glomp: Performs one on Mami because she's overjoyed to see her friend and magical girl mentor alive and well again.
  • One-Hit Kill: Once she contracts with Kyubey, she effortlessly defeats Walpurgisnacht.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Survives the manga because she didn't make a wish that caused her to become the Law of the Cycle, but also managed to avoid turning into a Witch despite fighting Walpurgisnacht.

    Kyubey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homuras_revenge_kyubey_fixed.png

Kyubey managed to just barely touch Madoka when she and Homura were sent back through time, leading to him also remember the events of the previous timeline.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Due to the circumstances involved in the creation of the current timeline, he has no reason to pretend to be nice and immediately tries to manipulate all the magical girls in Mitakihara into killing Homura, who he's deemed too dangerous to let live.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He inevitably succeeds at getting Madoka to contract with him, though she does not immediately turn into Kriemhild Gretchen.
  • Pet the Dog: Admits to actually having wanted to save Mami. Of course, he mostly wanted to because she had the best chance of killing Homura.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He immediately tries to turn Mami against Homura, knowing she had the best chance of taking Homura on in a fight and he has no way of disposing of her otherwise.
  • Xanatos Gambit: His freeing of Homura while Mami was mid-fight with Charlotte, knowing either outcome would result in a victory for him:
    • If Homura helped Mami take down Charlotte, he could turn Mami against her at a later time, knowing Mami was strong enough to take Homura on.
    • If she killed Mami or didn't help, Sayaka would blame Homura, leading to her losing crucial allies.

    Sayaka Miki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homuras_revenge_sayaka.png

Sayaka was rescued by Mami from a Witch and became introduced to the world of magical girls and Witches. She chose to become a magical girl to protect the city, and as a potential way to get revenge on Homura.

  • Dies Differently In The Adaptation: Played with, Sayaka still becomes a Witchnote  but her reason is entirely different. She doesn't fall into despair over her love not being requited and realizing what becoming a magical girl means, but through overusing her powers through excessive fighting.
  • Enemy Mine: Teams up with Kyoko, despite disliking her only fighting Witches for the Grief Seeds. But they work well together, training Sayaka up in her swordsmanship, making her a more formidable opponent.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out to have some knowledge about guns, as she immediately recognizes that Homura shot Kyubey with a Remington M870.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Mami's method of death drives Sayaka to swear vengeance against Homura, leading her to befriend Kyoko despite their differences in ideology so she'd stand a chance at getting said revenge.
    • She avoids her problems with Kyosuke and Hitomi because she instead focuses on hunting Witches and familiars full-time alongside Kyoko, preventing her mental health slipping as badly as it did in the anime.
  • Revenge: Sayaka swears she'll avenge Mami, blaming Homura for her death because Homura accidentally distracted Mami mid-fight with Charlotte.

    Mami Tomoe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homuras_revenge_mami.png

Mami is a veteran magical girl that saves Madoka and Sayaka from the Witch Gertrude. She plays up her role of the mentoring magical girl to the others, but retains an extremely hostile relationship with Homura.

  • Attack the Mouth: Uses her ribbons to bind Charlotte with her mouth open wide, then shoots a Tiro Finale right into the hole.
  • Dies Differently In The Adaptation: Played with, as Mami still ends up dying to Charlotte, but it happens later because Madoka saved her from the initial bite-attempt.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Mami refuses to outright murder Homura when she has her incapacitated, despite Kyubey trying to convince her into doing it.
  • Hope Spot: Madoka tackling Mami out of Charlotte's way has saved her life. And with Mami spared, she can use her full arsenal to fight Charlotte, including binding her in place and blasting a Tiro Finale directly into her mouth. It seems like Mami's fate has been changed, only for Charlotte to not be quite dead yet and chomping down Mami's head when Homura accidentally distracts her.
  • Mythology Gag: Dies in Chapter 3, the exact same number of episode she died in during the anime.

    Kyoko Sakura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homuras_revenge_kyoko.png

Kyoko heads to Mitakihara after hearing about Mami's death and being told by Kyubey about Homura, an extremely dangerous and powerful magical girl. She's interesting in fighting Homura.

  • Enemy Mine: Teams up with Sayaka, but bluntly states it's for no reason other than to train her up to not be an embarrassment when it comes to fighting Homura or Walpurgisnacht.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shows this in the final chapters, where she openly states she has no duty to fight against Walpurgisnacht to keep Mitakihara safe, but she decides to fight as long as the Grief Seeds she's collected with Sayaka hold out.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Manages to survive in this timeline, since Sayaka's Witch was quickly taken care of and Kyoko didn't have to perform a heroic sacrifice.
