Marissa Marcel

Played by: Manon Gage

The central figure of IMMORTALITY and lead actress of all three unreleased movies. Enigmatic and charismatic, she has all the makings of an up-and-coming star, but all her films seem to come to ruin before she's ever able to make it on the big screen. The main mystery of the game is finding out what happened to her by crawling through archival footage.

  • The Ageless: Downplayed. In the 30 years that pass between her movies, she doesn't seem to age at all, but this is a trait shared with characters like John Durick. She and John are both this way because the One is acting as them.
  • Dead All Along: The One lured her to a farmhouse and consumed her before she ever stepped foot on a movie set, taking her form in the process. All the footage we see of Marissa is of the One performing as her.
  • The Ingenue: A perception of her that is observed with fascination from many characters' lenses, for better or for worse. Albert Fisher deliberately casts her as the temptress Matilda to play off the dissonance, and The One becomes enamored with her spirit because of it.

    SPOILER CHARACTERS

The Proteans

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/immortality_11_26_2022_1_47_11_pm.png

Two inscrutable and fourth-wall breaking beings who can only be found by rewinding scenes at the correct time and speed.

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: They have been alive since before humanity, and occasionally infiltrated the latter in the form of Jesus and both Marys to give them "the greatest story".
Interviewer: You died for our sins?
    The Other: (beat) A story.
  • Body Surf: Both have the ability to take over human bodies by consuming them, retaining their memories and (possibly) some of their personality in the process. This is shown largely to kill the possessed human in the process, though a few scenes make this ambiguous.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: Many of their scenes have one or both looking directly into the camera, The One often making conversation with the player in expository monologues. (Though it's ambiguous if they can actively see outside the fourth wall or if they're simply aware of it.)
  • Immortality Immorality: They achieve immortality by consuming and replacing humans. The Other leans more into this than the One, being actively detached and disdainful of humanity, whereas the One covets their art and still wishes to elevate them.
  • Immortal Procreation Clause: The One states in a backmasked interview that they don't procreate the same way humans do, and that.
  • Light Is Not Good: They're pale-skinned, sport bleach-blond slicked-back hair, and tend to wear white or light colors when not actively impersonating the human they're currently wearing the face of. They also tend to play the role of celestial or demonic characters shrouded in angelic imagery, most exemplified in Ambrosio, where The Other is wearing the actor playing Satan and The One an extension of him as Matilda.
  • Monster Progenitor: To humanity.
Interviewer: And the idea that we come from you?
The One: Well, you have something of us in you, but your mortality makes you shine.
The Other: You imitate us, but everything you do is base. We tried to elevate you, but it didn't take.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": Only ever known as "The One" and "The Other [One]".

The One

Played by: Charlotta Mohlin

The central figure of ''IMMORTALITY'' and lead actress of all three unreleased movies.

  • Lemony Narrator: In addition to her Fourth-Wall Observer role, she also inserts some all-caps comments on the game's achievement descriptions. For example:
Devil With Wings: Collected the bird. FISCHER THOUGHT SATAN AS A DOVE WAS VERY CLEVER. BUT THE PUPPET NEVER WORKED.
  • Pet the Dog: Why she turns into Marissa Marcel in the first place. She felt sorry for how the girl would never be able to achieve her hopes and dreams and "devoured" her so she could fulfill those very dreams.
  • Posthumous Character: Maybe. The last scene chronologically is of them being immolated in Marissa Marcel's body. However, the death being witnessed by the viewer ensures they will become truly immortal.
  • Silly Rabbit, Cynicism Is for Losers!: Despite the Other's disillusionment with humanity, she still believes there's a place for them.

The Other

Played by: Timothy Lee Depriest

The One's companion and counterpart.

  • The Cynic: Unlike the One, the Other believes there's a future for his immortal kind apart from humanity and that they'd be better off for it.
  • Satanic Archetype: Much closer to this than the One, since he's male and the more sinister and cynical of the two. One of the hidden clips from Two Of Everything even has him claim "the snake and the apple were my idea".
