    Pox

"I am Pox the Vile! One day, the world will fear my name!"

Pox the Vile is a member of the Verrick Horde, a tribe of creatures that live by the harshest law of nature: only the strong survive. Many tribes fear the Verrick will be the Final Calamity. Just ask the Enoru, who once worshipped the World Tree, which is now just a rotting log that the Verrick have burrowed their fortress into. Though the Verrick are strong and ruthless, Pox was born weak and frail, and it's only a matter of time before Queen Agony casts him aside, as he is not fit to pass on his inferior genes.

But, Pox is no ordinary Verrick. He has more guts and ambition and ruthlessness than anyone. He knows something no one else knows, something he knows the world will one day learn to fear: there's a tyrant inside of him. And, one day, it will devour everything.

  • Ambidextrous Sprite: Averted. He has specific sprites for every direction he's facing to account for his missing arm and eye.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He gets his right arm and left eye eaten at the start of his story. The lost arm doesn't seem to affect his combat abilities, but his missing eye decreases his critical hit damage.
  • Bad with the Bone: His weapon of choice is an axe with a scapula for a blade.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He makes it pretty clear that his intents are far from altruistic. He wants to dethrone Queen Agony just so he can be the one to helm their quest to conquer Gloom.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: He's one to the average JRPG protagonist. He has a lot of their design tropes, such as his spiky hair and headband, and his story is about him trying to take down an evil ruler who plans to take over the world. The difference with him is that his intention is to down Queen Agony so that he's the one to lead the invasion, and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal.
  • Determinator: Pox is as weak as his people claim he is, but he has ambition in spades. It translates into gameplay in the form of his "Grit" adaptation, which gives him a 10% chance to revive himself should he go down in battle. The chance decreases the more he falls, though.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: He takes the devouring of his arm and eye impressively well, his only response being to tell the eaters that he isn't dead and can still work without so much as a grunt of discomfort.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Pox is a malnourished and genetically inferior slave within the Verrick horde, easily setting him at the bottom of the rung. However, when thrown into the outside world, he's still able to cleave his way through opponents, even while missing an eye and an arm.
  • The Power Of Potential: Even though Pox is merely a malnourished slave at the start of the game, he is implied to have an unnatural determination for his kind. This is reinforced by Queen Agony saying that she was once a slave herself.
  • The Usurper: The ultimate goal of his quest is to usurp Queen Agony, ruler of the Verrick.
  • Villain Protagonist: Pox wants to dethrone Queen Agony so that he can replace her. He also has no qualms about eating and devouring anyone and anything he comes across, innocent or not.

    Capella

"I'm on a journey to meet God."

Capella is the last of the Sua-Roo. She lives in Dream, a small town in a forest by Dewdrop City. The Ahm that have raised her also revere her. She is the Chosen One, after all. She will give birth to God.

The time of the ritual is almost at hand, so she must begin her journey. Joined by two warrior-priests of the Moonlight Family, she sets off to the Moonlight Temple to perform her sacred duty. However, something inside is pulling her away from her path, away from God: feelings that shouldn't be possible in a world like this, feelings that only she has, for she is the last of a great tribe, a tribe that could feel. She is the last of the Sua-Roo.

  • The Chosen One: She is destined to give birth to God, with her story beginning on the first day of her journey to perform the ritual.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Distinctly more humanoid compared to the other bugs of Gloom, and quite cute to boot. It's noticeable since she's accompanied by her two more inhuman looking guardians, Sleep and Whisper.
  • Last of His Kind: The last of the Sua-Roo, one of the few creatures on Gloom capable of feeling empathy.
  • The Medic: She's the only person on Gloom capable of using Magic of the Stars, which consists of healing spells, including one capable of reviving allies once per battle. She can also share her potions with her allies.
  • Virtuous Vegetarianism: One of her adaptations is called "Vegetarian", and it serves to keep her from eating any enemy corpses in battle. However, she can still eat the corpses of plant based creatures, which other people generally shy away from.

    Phlegm
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phlegm_2.png

Phlegm's a Skyx, and no one likes a Skyx. But, he doesn't let that kind of thing get to him. He's just trying to take it easy, hanging out with his deadbeat friends, taking odd jobs if he has to, picking a few pockets to make ends meet. But, when his hand gets caught in the wrong pocket, Phlegm is forced to use his particular skillset under the employ of one of Gloom's richest and most powerful entities. He'll set out on an adventure for the sake of corporate espionage that will eventually lead him to one of Gloom's most ancient and powerful secrets.

  • Creepy Cockroach: Subverted. He's a large, roach-like alien that is considered the lowest class on Gloom, but he's considered to be charismatic and good looking.
  • '50s Hair: He's got his hair styled as a pompadour.
  • Lovable Rogue: Phlegm is described as a charismatic scoundrel who ends up dragged into the events of the game by picking the wrong pocket.
  • Sticky Fingers: As his character spotlight states, he's a pickpocket who can steal from NPC's in order to amass more items and money than the other characters can normally.

    Shear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shear_4.png

On the eve of her ritualistic suicide, Shear, the Wind that Cuts, waits patiently in the snow. She knows that she deserves this. The mating ritual was a failure. Her husband is dead, she is barren. She broke the balance between life and death. The Reiken'O must follow the traditions of their ancestors. It is the only way they've been able to thrive in such a hostile world.

But, something compels her to look up. He is there: her husband, headless and translucent, pointing to the exit of the village. The chains of tradition struggle to reel her back, but she is moving, now, her eyes staring straight ahead, her hand caressing the hilt of her blade, ready to carve a path down the mountain. Ready to sever the chains that bind her.

  • Cool Sword: Her main weapon is her blade, Ice Dragon Nail.
  • Mantis Mating Meal: The mating ritual she performed involved devouring the head of her husband in order to nourish and sustain the child she would carry. The spirit of her husband is described as being headless when he appears before her as a result.
