    Companions

Duras

The first companion you can gain, Duras belongs to the Berserker faction.

  • Crutch Character: Showing up as early as he does Duras can really help alleviate the Early Game Hell.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Seems like a very nice helpful guy. Later you can find out that he killed Askor in cold blood for personal gain and was planning to put the blame on the victim's best friend, and if you tell the truth he won't hesitate to attack and kill you. He also basically confirms he only helped Jax to eventually use him in his plan. How much this is true differs between translations of the game however; in the German version he pretty much admits to committing cold-blooded murder, while in the English version Duras insists he acted in self-defense.

Falk

A Cleric you can meet on top of an Alb converter.

  • Genius Bruiser: Carries a heavy hammer and a powerful flame thrower, but is very soft spoken and intellectual.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: He asks you to gather a number of rare materials to help his commanding officer complete a secret project. The secret project is Falk himself, an android created to replace human soldiers by the "commanding officer" Falk mentioned. Falk was unaware of this but, given he has muted emotions, it doesn't bother him much.

Ray

Technically the first companion you see in the game, as this Outlaw steals Jax's equipment in the very beginning.

  • Dark Secret: It's understandable that he doesn't bring it up but Ray did more than steal Jax's equipment. He was the one who shot down Jax's Raider. He doesn't want to hide this after he gets to like Jax but he can't reveal it, as he was forced to do it by Zardom on pain of his brother's life and he believes Zardom still has his brother.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Towards the end of the game Ray attempts this by stealing Jax's repaired but still unarmed Raider and flying it into the weak point on the Ice Palace's defences to bring down the energy barriers. Ultimately subverted, as Ray proves able to wriggle out of trouble again and survives the crash.
  • Loveable Rogue: Steals from Jax at the beginning and sells all his powerful equipment, but can later become a loyal and friendly companion. Plus, being an outlaw, he is a 'Rogue' but is not as crazy and violent as some of them.
  • Revenge Myopia: Assuming he's telling the truth Ray is the target of this. A group of Clerics attacked him to claim an animal he'd hunted and wouldn't just let him run away. Ray set a trap that killed all but one of his pursuers and the survivor, Walter, feels this justifies taking a contract of Ray's life despite him and his teammates being the aggressors.

Caja

A female mage of the Berserker faction.

  • Action Mom: In the second game, having given birth to Jax's son Dex in the intervening time.
  • Betty and Veronica: Of the two potential love interest she is broadly the Betty to Nasty's Veronica, given her modest style of dress and calmer, kindlier personality.
  • Sour Supporter: She has a lot of issues with how the Berserkers handle things and has distanced herself from the leadership but still ultimately believes in their cause.
  • Token Good Teammate: Has the most benevolent nature of Jax's companions and is the only one focused on helping people as well as personal goals before she joined him.

Nasty

A female outlaw that lives up to her name.

  • Action Girl: Loves to get into fights and is more 'action-y' than Caja, the other female companion.
  • Betty and Veronica: As a more aggressive character with a much more sexualised design she is the Veronica to Caja's Betty among the two love interests.
  • Blood Knight: Her main motivation for joining you is that you can get her bigger things to fight.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Take a shot every time she swears and you will need an ambulance within a minute.
  • The Last Dance: Revealed late in the game Nasty has the Grey Death, a terminal illness, and part of the reason she throws herself into fights with wild abandon is that she has little to lose and would rather go down fighting. Jax can find a cure for her and, given her presence in the second game, he canonically did.

C.R.O.N.Y U4

Your loyal drone that has to be repaired first.

  • Comically Missing the Point: As a drone, CRONY doesn't really understand Jax's cynical humour very well.
  • Sole Survivor: Jax's other C.R.O.N.Y units (presumably at least three others from it's designation) were destroyed in his raider crash.

Arx

A separatist of the Albs.

  • Carry a Big Stick: Like a lot of Alb's his melee weapon of choice is huge two-handed warhammer.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Eats the flesh of other Albs and also wants to eat Jax's heart. You can convince him to use a monster's heart instead.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While most of Jax's companions are morally dubious Arx is a serious disturbing guy whose place on the side of the Free Peoples is broadly coincidental.
