Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

* DaddysGirl: Aoko's main reason for hating Kaitou KID is because he constantly makes her father look incompetent and will become infuriated if anyone (mostly Kaito) insults him. Gets taken UpToEleven in the SkiResortEpisode, where she ''cosplays'' as the elder Nakamori, complete with fake mustache (ItMakesSenseInContext... slightly).

[[ThemeNaming Mandatory naming note]]: He's got a huge number of layers here. Kuroba means '"black feather" - referring to flight and likely to his black hair, as well as Kid's apparent alignment according to the police. The name also possibly references magpies (birds who horde shiny objects). In a sense it is an ironic name since the Kaitou Kid is otherwise usually associated with white birds like doves. Kaito is a pun on both "kaitou" and the English "kite", which matches the appearance of his hang glider and once again refers to flight. The name Kuroba deliberately has 'black' in it as the majority of characters in ''Magic Kaito'' had colour-themed names. Still another point for the name is that 'clover' is spelled 'Kuroba' in Japanese- Kaito's monocle has a clover on it and FourLeafClover are considered a sign of luck in Japan, like in the West.

* TheAce: Smart, athletic, and good-looking.
* AdaptationalJerkass: In the recent ''Detective Conan'' movies Kaito tends to commit more dubious actions such as trying to grope and kiss Ran, whom he tricked by convincing her his true secret identity was Shinichi and still led on with the deception even after his theft was complete. This characterization has more in common [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness with the very earliest chapters]] of ''Magic Kaito,'' but the subsequent majority of Kaito's own franchise characterizes him as far more benevolent. While the current manga's Kaito is a pervert and loves to make mischief as a civilian, he also does his best to hold KID to a gentlemanly personality as the role is his father's legacy, making this adaptation change a noticeable contrast with the contemporary manga character.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''aito '''K'''uroba. The same applies to his alter-ego.
* AnimalMotifs: His surname (Black Feather) evokes magpies, and Kaitou Kid evokes doves.
* AntiHero: In his own show, ''Magic Kaito''. He steals artifacts and causes trouble for the police (including his best friend's father), but it's all in the name of finding the people who killed his father. He also makes sure to return the artifacts he steals.
* AntiVillain: In ''Detective Conan''. Yes, he's a thief, but he's a noble thief. Plus, see his reason for his thefts in the above trope.
* BadassCape: As Kaitou Kid, he sports a magnificent white cape.
* BadassInANiceSuit: His Kaitou Kid suit is quite dapper. And also comes with a ''glider''.
* BadassPacifist: Averted. Kaitou Kid has a reputation for never killing or severely harming people while committing his crimes. However, he has enacted violence despite this reputation: during Saguru's introduction heist, Kaito violently assaults a police officer with a wrench. During the Christmas heist, he bombs a landmark Christmas tree and collapses the building of a shopping center that dared to use his name. In ''Detective Conan'' his heists are usually ''less'' violent, but he's still done some pretty troubling things: for example, during the Kirin's Horn heist, he tasered Conan, even though tasers are excruciatingly painful and potentially lethal to children and those with health problems, of which Conan is currently both. He generally prefers not to use force, though he may, and when he does, he doesn't seem to ''intend'' lethal force, which appears to be why Inspector Nakamori has more respect for him than other criminals.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Aoko -- Personality wise, they seem to behave similarly to [[Manga/CaseClosed Heiji and Kazuha]]: great friends who tend to argue with each other and hide romantic feelings for one another.
* BeyondTheImpossible: He can perfectly imitate anyone's voice, even girls and young children. Conan requires a device created by a MadScientist to do that, and when he first witnesses Kaito's ability this is what he thinks.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa. They are both JerkWithAHeartOfGold protagonists who are confirmed to be {{Teen Genius}}es that are also [[InsufferableGenius insufferable]]. At their own high school they are [[TheAce considered aces in their respective fields]] (Kaito - magician, Shinichi - detective), something of which they have been interested in since their own childhoods; and because of their respective skills, popularity, and natural good looks, they are both [[ChickMagnet popular with the opposite sex]], [[ChildhoodFriendRomance but are only interested in the respective childhood best friend]], even if they have a [[BelligerentSexualTension weird way]] of showing it. Currently they are both {{living a double life}} due to certain circumstances and because of those said circumstances they must keep their [[SecretIdentity identities hidden]], even from their best friend/main love interest. Also, in their new identities, they have their own {{improbable weapon}} to use in case of danger (Kaito - card gun, Shinichi - soccer ball). And their main goal in their own show is to find the BigBad organization responsible for a personal matter (Kaito - killing his father, Shinichi - attempting to kill him). They even have the same Japanese voice actor!
* {{Bishonen}}: Is very good-looking.
* ButtMonkey: He suffers a lot of amusing injury whenever he appears in ''Detective Conan'', most of them as LaserGuidedKarma.
** In his very first appearance, he has to jump overboard to escape Conan.
** Many of his heist is turned into a murder, which made people naturally suspect him.
** In the Shadows Approaching Haibara's Secret arc, he barely got away from the Bell Tree train because [[spoiler:Vermouth rigged the train with explosives to target Haibara - who he disguised as because Conan blackmailed him]].
** In the Blush Mermaid heist, [[spoiler:he was kicked on the head by Sera for using a taser on her.]]
** In the Green Emperor case, he was almost caught by Makoto.
** In the Fairy Lip case, [[spoiler:his disguise as Kazuha and his subsequent teasing while taking advantage of it almost made Hattori kiss him and it was only a timely arrival by Ran and Conan that stopped that]].
* ByronicHero: Subverted. Charismatic, Smart, yet Jerk and drive by the wish of justice. Even so, he is not so violent, destructive or brooding and dark as a regular Byronic Hero.
* CanonImmigrant: In ''Detective Conan''. He was originally in a series before Gosho began ''Detective Conan''.
* ChickMagnet: Got a whole bunch of chocolates for Valentine's Day. And he's quite popular with the ladies as Kaitou Kid.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Aoko -- Similar to Shinichi and Ran, Kaito and Aoko are childhood friends who met each other at a young age and have crushes on one another.
* ChivalrousPervert: He has a habit of mentally logging information about a girl's panties. He seems to like white ones. However, he proves not to be entirely shameless; for example, in his first appearance in ''Detective Conan'', [[spoiler:he drugged Ran and disguised himself as her. Conan thought he had also stripped her to get her dress [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments and Kaito teased him with the possibility.]] He actually didn't: he was the bellboy who took Ran's cocktail dress to her, and in the meantime he made a copy.]]
** Also noted he never [[MuggedForDisguise strips down women for his disguises]] normally. The only two exceptions of this were for certain reasons: one because [[spoiler:he thought Sera was a guy]], the other [[spoiler:Aoko was the only person he could disguise as at the given moment]].
* CluelessChickMagnet: Since that was the first time he came to school on Valentine's Day, he has no idea why all of these girls are suddenly just handing him chocolate for free.
* ColorMotifs: White, given how his Kaitou Kid suit is almost entirely white.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: To Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa. Despite ''[[BirdsOfAFeather a lot]]'' of similarities between the two, they have some key differences -- Shinichi is a [[AmateurSleuth detective]] who, despite the flair for the dramatic, [[TheStoic is usually serious]]; Kaito is a [[PhantomThief magician/thief]] who is well known, in either identity, for [[TheTrickster performing silly, though ingenious tricks]]. The famous detective, Shinichi, was forced into being the unknown "Conan Edogawa" and tries to take down the organization because two of the members attempted to kill him; the relatively normal Kaito ''chose'' to become the new and world famous "Kaitou Kid" after learning that the accident that took his father's life was staged by an organization. Also, Shinichi is trying to apprehend the Black Organization through as much legal means as possible; Kaito performs numerous thefts to catch the men he's looking for (though he ''usually'' returns what he steals, especially as CharacterizationMarchesOn).
* DisguisedInDrag: As a master of disguise, he's not adverse to using women disguises when needed and pull it off well:
** Kaito steals [[spoiler:Sonoko's mother Tomiko's ''very'' expensive black pearl]] while perfectly disguised as ''Ran''.
** He also [[spoiler:disguises himself as a maid when he rescues Jirokichi Suzuki's dog.]] Lampshaded by [[spoiler: Conan]] when he confronts him, who suggests that [[CovertPervert he enjoys crossdressing.]]
** In his own series, he disguised himself as Aoko three separate times. It's also noted he's disguised as her four other times off-screen.
** Played with much later: [[spoiler:Kaito [[UndressingTheUnconscious knocks out and strips a girl named Sera]] to [[MuggedForDisguise disguise himself as her]], leaving her only in her undies... but Sera is such a {{Bifauxnen}} and so flat-chested that he doesn't notice it's a girl. (To be fair, she is wearing boyish underwear and a top without a bra at that moment. He also caught her in the men's restroom, where she slipped in because the girls's restroom was full [[PottyEmergency and she couldn't wait]]) Conan later explains everything, Kaito being left shocked when told Sera's a girl... and cue to a very pissed off Sera in her undies drop-kicking him on the head.]]
** His next appearance crossdressing in the ''Detective Conan'' manga involved him disguising as Kazuha and being very smug about the perks of the disguise until he almost has to make out with her not-boyfriend Hattori because of it.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: His characterization has changed ''a lot'' over time. Fans of his suave and generally non-violent characterization in ''Detective Conan'' are usually shocked at how much of an impulsive, mistake-ridden, and sometimes violent person Kaito is for much of the earlier manga chapters.
* {{Expy}}: Kaito is an expy of Kaito Lupin, who only appeared in the prototype "Nonchalant Lupin" short story Aoyama published before officially working on Magic Kaito. Kaito Lupin himself is a pretty obvious expy of Literature/ArseneLupin, making Kaito Kuroba an expy of an expy.
* FriendlyEnemy: With Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa. They may be adversaries most of the time but act as a good team when the need arises.
* GenerationXerox: Like his father, Kaito is the famous master thief, "Kaitou Kid", whose main adversary is a genius detective with the last name "Kudo". And despite their conflicting sides, they have a healthy respect for one another.
* GentlemanThief: A well-known and popular LoveableRogue thief (and ChickMagnet) who wears a suave, white [[BadassInANiceSuit nice suit]]...even if he is a pervert.
* GoodWearsWhite: Kaito means no harm as Kaitou Kid; he only wants to find the men who killed his father and steals the most expensive or sought after jewelry, art, etc. in order to do so. However, his constant thefts of them make a lot of police officers consider him nothing but a criminal. Adding to the latter description, it should be noted that in one of Akako's prophesies about him describes him as ''The Sinner in White''.
* HairstyleInertia: Kaito kept the same MessyHair from his childhood.
* HighClassGlass: The monocle came from Literature/ArseneLupin.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He dislikes both Akako and Saguru because of their arrogance, but Kaito is quite arrogant himself.
* IconicOutfit: Kaito is usually remembered with his "Kaitou Kid" suit.
* IdenticalStranger: Not just a limitation of the [[OnlySixFaces art style]]. He and Shinichi Kudo are deliberately drawn and canonically described as looking similar to each other, and the resemblance is strong enough that they can be disguised as one another without too much effort. This is not helped by the two sharing a voice actor in most appearances. To wit, Kaito has performed as Shinichi five times in the films. Unfortunately not enough to trick Ran the third and fifth time.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: As Kaitou Kid, he uses a card gun as a weapon.
* ImprobablyHighIQ: Apparently has an IQ of 400, as determined [[ArtisticLicenseBiology through DNA testing]].
* InsufferableGenius: Kaito had a high IQ and he has a habit of thinking he can outsmart anyone.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Perverted, arrogant, and insensitive. Kaito also genuinely desires to make people happy with his magic, even if his methods are... unconventional.
* LatexPerfection: Any costume made by a Kuroba is bound to be perfect.
* {{Leitmotif}}: He has his own [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B5MTUShAns theme song]].
* LivingADoubleLife: As a normal high school student and a master thief.
* LoveableRogue: Even though he's a wanted criminal by the police, the citizens all ''love'' Kaitou Kid, with even Inspector Nakamori and Conan taking note on some of his good points, even if they're still intent on arresting him. And even in his normal identity as Kaito, he's quite likable and popular, in spite of his perverted antics.
* MadeOfIron: Particularly in the early manga, where AmusingInjuries abounded. Even in the later, more serious chapters, however, this trait never quite faded; the ''Sun Halo'' arc, for one, has him taking ''a shard of broken glass'' to the gut and still staying conscious and coordinated long enough to pull off one of his trademark disguise switcheroos.
* MagicianDetective: At times, he has been known to use his intellect as a thief to solve things. Main example — the Golden Eye heist. Plus various other incidences.
* MasterOfDisguise: He can switch between perfect full body costumes at a moment's notice. In one case, he goes from Nakamori to [[SerialEscalation Genta (a young child)]] to Kaitou Kid to a random police guy within minutes, all with the appropriate clothing, perfectly imitated voices and even the stamp on his cheek that Nakamori previously placed on everyone in the room ''except him''.
* MeaningfulName:
** The name "Kaito" means "kite". It is written differently (i.e. is a different kanji) than the word "kaitou", which means "phantom thief."
** "Kuroba" means black feather, referencing his black hair and duel magpie/dove bird motifs
*** The word "clover" is also pronounced "kuroba" in Japanese. A four-leaf clover appears on the tag of Kid's monocle.
* MessyHair: Has an uncombed, mop of black hair.
* MinorLivingAlone: His father died years ago and his mother is almost always away traveling.
* {{Motifs}}: Of the moon. His wardrobe is almost completely white (the color of the moon), his heists are always at night time (when the moon appears), one of his nicknames is the "Magician Under the Moonlight", and a symbol for the moon could be mystery (a trait he is as Kaitou Kid).
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: Well, never hurt a bystander, more like. Kaitou KID has, to the knowledge of the police, never killed or permanently harmed anyone. It's one of the reasons Nakamori has ''some'' respect for him. [[spoiler:In fact, the reason for his injury in the ''Sun Halo'' arc was because he was saving Aoko from getting hurt from slipping into the pitfall trap meant for him.]] However, he has bombed buildings and has a record of assault, including several counts of assault of a minor where Conan's involved. He's also known to have beaten a policeman with a wrench to the point of incapacitation and unconsciousness.
* NiceHat: As Kaitou Kid he sports a white top hat with a blue ribbon band.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Despite Kaito and Shinichi meeting by complete coincidence as KID and Conan with no knowledge of any personal connection, Kaito's father was Shinichi's mother's mentor and Shinichi's father's rival and best friend, and in the ''Manga/MagicKaito'' anime adaptation, Shinichi's surrogate uncle, Agasa, is heavily implied to be the long-time friend of Jii, Kaito's surrogate grandfather, as well as the supplier of the gear Jii gives Kaito to help with magic tricks, which Kaito uses on his heists. Neither of them were aware of any of this upon first meeting, and it's still unclear whether Kaito knows any of it. Also, [[spoiler:Vermouth, one of the Black Org assassins gunning for Shinichi's friend Haibara, is another former student of Kaito's father.]] How did these two not meet before the plot kicked in?
* PaperThinDisguise: Really, the only thing that remotely hides his identity is the fact that he often wears the brim of his hat in such a way that his eyes are slightly hidden in shadow. That's it. Really, it's a miracle as to why he hasn't been figured out at this point (though his status as a MasterOfDisguise makes it a tiny bit more plausible). Granted in one chapter/episode Inspector Nakamori does see Kaito's face and links him with Kaitou Kid... only for Kaito to slip away again. The fact his name has nearly identical pronunciation (despite the different kanji spelling) as his alter ego does not help his case.
** [[spoiler: He uses this to his advantage by disguising himself as Aoko the next night and convinces Nakamori he was pretending to be his daughter and his daughter's best friend to mess with him.]] And considering Kaitou KID is known for his disguises, it's not unjustified for onlookers to assume he is always wearing someone else's face.
** Ironically, this does help him much later on [[spoiler: when Aoko is able to remove his hat in the ''Sun Halo'' arc... and rather than thinking he really is Kaito, accuses him of using his face to mock her. Heck, even when Aoko does begin to suspect the connection between the two, it's for completely different reasons.]]
* PhantomThief: Kaito's profession. He's even 'stolen' [[MonumentalTheft a clock tower]]. His manga was all about the various comedic exploits he would get into as he ran from the police until CerebusSyndrome set in.
* PhotographicMemory: Kaito has the ability to memorize very complicated facts in short periods of time. This usually gets put to use in helping him create his disguises.
** [[spoiler: This is once used against him by Shinichi, who has the cops ask him for the driver's license number of the policeman he is impersonating, something most people would not have memorized. Kaito had memorized it and rattles it off, outing himself as KID in disguise.]]
* RenaissanceMan: Kaito has a wide range of skills which contribute to the sole purpose of being a phantom thief. He is a ventriloquist, a magician, a master of disguise and has excellent deductive skills on par with Saguru, Shinichi or Hattori. He has excellent athletic abilities and can play almost any sport. He can drive any vehicle and can bypass most security systems easily.
* TheRival: In ''Magic Kaito'', he and Saguru are always at each others' throats, trying to outsmart one another at every given opportunity. In ''Detective Conan'', Shinichi views him like this.
* SecretIdentity: He hides his life as Kaitou Kid from his friends.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: He shares the same voice actor in most appearances as Shinichi Kudo.
* TheTrickster: Loves to play tricks on everybody around him, especially Aoko; his favorite one is checking the color of girls' panties.
* {{Tsundere}}: To Aoko. Type B. Kaito switch in wholesome and cold jerk moods with her.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: Played with. Rather than serving as an ironic visual contrast between the clothes and the black-hearted character wearing them, as is typical of the trope, the white of Kaito's suit serves partially to reflect his perceived moral difference with other criminals; Kaito himself says that his suit is white because he's "bold and flamboyant" and he's "different to a thief who wears all black." Conan, however, points out a more pragmatic reason for a magician thief to wear a white suit: during Kaito's many disappearing tricks, he can just switch to more discreet clothing, and while everybody around him is looking out for something white, he can abscond unnoticed.
* VillainProtagonist: Played with through his roles as both AntiHero and AntiVillain. Kaito steals as Kaitou KID and has caused many incidents of property damage and assault in the process, as well as generally making trouble for the police, for the sake of trying to bait and eventually get "vengeance" on the murderous criminals who killed his father, probably by getting them caught by the police. His gun is only a trick prop, and he has on a few occasions even gone out of his way to protect bystanders near him. Since he's also looking for a very specific item, he typically returns the goods he's stolen after determining they aren't what he wants.
* VoiceChangeling: He's capable of imitating most voices he hears.
* WeaponOfChoice: That [[AbnormalAmmo playing-card gun]] is almost as famous as Kaitou Kid himself. Interestingly, early chapters of the manga had him using it willy-nilly in ''both'' identities; the ''1412'' anime changes this so the civilian Kaito [[DeathDealer flicks playing cards with his bare hands instead]].
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He has an irrational and completely unexplained fear of fish. Even dead ones.
* WorthyOpponent: He and Shinichi/Conan have a huge amount of respect for each other's abilities.
* YouKilledMyFather: Kaito's main motivation against the bad guys is to get them back for murdering his father onstage and [[MakeItLookLikeAnAccident playing it up as an accident]].

* BadassPacifist: Averted. Kaitou Kid has a reputation for never killing or severely harming people while committing his crimes. However, he has enacted violence despite this reputation: during Hakuba's introduction heist, Kaito violently assaults a police officer with a wrench.

* RenaissanceMan: Kaito has a wide range of skills which contribute to the sole purpose of being a phantom thief. He is a ventriloquist, a magician, a master of disguise and has excellent deductive skills on par with Hakuba, Shinichi or Hattori. He has excellent athletic abilities and can play almost any sport. He can drive any vehicle and can bypass most security systems easily.
* TheRival: In ''Magic Kaito'', he and Hakuba are always at each others' throats, trying to outsmart one another at every given opportunity. In ''Detective Conan'', Shinichi views him like this.

* QuintessentialBritishGentleman: Downplayed. Hakuba appears polite and gentlemanly, yet has an arrogant undertone while talking to just about anyone. His gentlemanly side is especially present when talking to or about women.
* TheRival: Hakuba's the only one who comes close to Kaito's/the Kaitou Kid's [[TeenGenius level]]. Plus they once competed over who would get to take Aoko on a date. In ''Manga/CaseClosed'', Shinichi/Conan's pretty much taken over the role of being the Kid's rival, although Hakuba also exists within the crossover as well.

His speech is usually formal and polite, like his attire; for example, he uses the more humble pronoun 'boku' to refer to himself during the "Detective Koushien" case, while Heiji uses 'ore,' which is a cockier and less polite way of referring to oneself. However, Hakuba displays a distinct sense of arrogance himself, particularly during his earlier appearances. He displays an arrogant assurance in his ability to capture the Kaitou Kid, and conveys a superior attitude towards Inspector Nakamori's men. Kaito even describes his tone as sugary yet obnoxious.

It's a trope on its own.

Still another point for the name is that 'clover' is spelled 'Kuroba' in Japanese- Kaito's monocle has a clover on it and 4-leaf clovers are considered a sign of luck in Japan, like in the West.

Added back under the correct trope
