corrected 'cousin' to 'brother' in one degree of seperation

* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Despite Kaito and Shin'ichi meeting by complete coincidence as KID and Conan with no knowledge of any personal connection, Kaito's father Tōichi was Shin'ichi's mother Yukiko's mentor and Shin'ichi's father Yusaku's rival and [[spoiler:as it turns out, cousin]], and in the ''Manga/MagicKaito'' anime adaptation, Shin'ichi's [[HonoraryUncle surrogate uncle]], Agasa, is heavily implied to be the long-time friend of Jii, Kaito's surrogate grandfather, as well as the supplier of the gear Jii gives Kaito to help with magic tricks, which Kaito uses on his heists. Neither of them were aware of any of this upon first meeting, and it's still unclear whether Kaito knows any of it. Also, [[spoiler:Vermouth, a reconnaissance operative of the Black Organization gunning for Shin'ichi's friend Shiho Miyano/Ai Haibara/Sherry, is another former student of Kaito's father.]] How did these two not meet before the plot kicked in?

17-year-old second-year high school student Kaito Kuroba
is the local InspectorJavert, Ginzo Nakamori, thus she hates [[ProtagonistTitle titular]] ''Magic Kaito''. Eight years after his father Tōichi's death, he discovers his father's SecretIdentity was the original PhantomThief Kaitou Kid and [[LegacyCharacter later takes on the mantle himself]] in order to search for humiliating him.the jewel called the Pandora Gem and stop the people who murdered his father from obtaining it, and also to bring them to justice.\\\

While not under the guise of Kaitou Kid, Kaito seems to be rather popular in school and likes to pull harmless pranks on his classmates. He also loves to demonstrate his magic skills and hates seeing other people upset. While good at many things, he is absolutely hopeless at ice skating, and has an unexplained [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes extreme fear of fish]].\\\

In Gōshō Aoyama's later work [[Manga/CaseClosed ''Detective Conan'']] he established a SharedUniverse between his two manga series when Kid [[CanonImmigrant first appeared]] in Conan File 156-''Chance Meeting''/Episode 76 ''Conan vs. Kaitou Kid''. From then on Kid made rather sparse appearances in the Conan {{Anime}} and {{Manga}} becoming one of the [[TheProtagonist The Protagonist's]] major rivals/allies and a massive BreakoutCharacter, experiencing more popularity there than in his own series. Kid is a major figure in the theatrical films Anime/DetectiveConanFilm03TheLastWizardOfTheCentury, Anime/DetectiveConanFilm08MagicianOfTheSilverSky, Anime/DetectiveConanFilm10ThePrivateEyesRequiem , Anime/DetectiveConanFilm14TheLostShipInTheSky, Anime/DetectiveConanFilm19SunflowersOfInferno and Anime/DetectiveConanFilm23TheFistOfTheBlueSapphire. File [[spoiler:824-''Mystery Train (Final Destination)'']], where he [[spoiler:helps Conan fool the Black Organization into believing Shiho Miyano is dead]], is the first time he explicitly takes part in a major Detective Conan plot. [[spoiler:Until File 1008-''See? ♡'' retroactively recast his third canonical appearance--Files 299-302-''Sunset Mansion Murder Case''--as the debut for ''Detective Conan'''s BigBad Ren'ya Karasuma, with KID having been used as bait to lure detectives in to investigate the Organization's very earliest known murders--though no one realized this at the time.]]\\\

[[ThemeNaming Mandatory Naming Note]]: Her ColourfulThemeNaming naming note]]: Kuroba (黒羽) means '"black feather" - referring to flight and likely to his black hair, as well as Kid's apparent alignment according to the police. The name also possibly references magpies (birds who horde shiny objects). In a sense it is blue (''Ao'').an ironic name since the Kaitou Kid is otherwise usually associated with white birds like doves. Kaito's given name (快斗) has different kanji than the word 'kaitou' (怪盗), which means 'phantom thief,' although they intentionally sound alike. The name Kuroba deliberately has 'black' in it as the majority of characters in ''Magic Kaito'' [[ColourfulThemeNaming had colour-themed names]]. Still another point for the name is that 'clover' is spelled 'Kuroba' in Japanese- Kaito's monocle has a clover on it and FourLeafClover are considered a sign of luck in Japan, like in the West.

Added DiffLines:

* AbnormalAmmo: Kaito's playing-card gun is almost as famous as Kaitou Kid himself. Interestingly, early chapters of the manga had him using it willy-nilly in ''both'' identities; the ''1412'' anime changes this so the civilian Kaito [[DeathDealer flicks playing cards with his bare hands instead]].
* TheAce: Kaito is an accomplished young man with many talents. He is smart, athletic, and good-looking as well as a genius.
* AdaptationalJerkass: In the recent [[Franchise/DetectiveConan ''Detective Conan'']] movies Kaito tends to commit more dubious actions such as trying to grope and kiss Ran Mōri, whom he tricked by convincing her his true secret identity was Shin'ichi Kudō and still led on with the deception even after his theft was complete. This characterization has more in common [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness with the very earliest chapters]] of ''Magic Kaito,'' but the subsequent majority of Kaito's own franchise characterizes him as far more benevolent. While the current manga's Kaito is a pervert and loves to make mischief as a civilian, he also does his best to hold KID to a gentlemanly personality as the role is his father's legacy, making this adaptation change a noticeable contrast with the contemporary manga character.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''aito '''K'''uroba. The same applies to his alter-ego, '''K'''aito '''K'''id.
* AnimalMotifs: His Kuroba (黒羽) means "black feather" and evokes magpies, and Kaitou Kid evokes doves.
* AntiHero: In his own series, ''Magic Kaito''. He steals artifacts and causes trouble for the police (including his best friend Aoko Nakamori's father Inspector Ginzō Nakamori), but it's all in the name of finding the people who killed his father. He also makes sure to return the artifacts he steals.
* AntiVillain: In ''Detective Conan'', Kid plays this role in contrast to Conan's TheHero. He is still a thief but he does not steal for pleasure or [[NeverHurtAnInnocent harm innocents]].
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Kaito inherits photographic memory from his late father Tōichi, able to seamlessly remember details about people or things that he saw. He also has a talent for seeing through deception, as he became one of the first people to realize that Conan Edogawa was not a normal child.
* BadassAndChildDuo: On numerous occasions, Kid has been a direct ally to (physically) 7-year-old Conan against a greater threat. This is most prominently shown in Anime/DetectiveConanFilm14TheLostShipInTheSky, the finale of Anime/DetectiveConanFilm19SunflowersOfInferno and Anime/DetectiveConanFilm23TheFistOfTheBlueSapphire.
* BadassBoast: Kaito is found of gloating in the face of victory and has given many cocky lines in his currently 35 years of existence.
-->'''Kaito Kid:''' Stealing is what thieves do best. Even if it's a person's heart.
-->'''Kaito Kid:''' Besides, I'm not here tonight as the son of Kuroba Tōichi, your mentor in magic, nor the second-year high-school student you call Young Master. Right now, I'm the one they're all talking about. A pompous villain...
-->'''Kaito Kid:''' A thief is a creative artist who takes his prey in style... But a detective is nothing more than a critic, who follows his footsteps..
* BadassBookworm: Kaito does not look it, but he is a thorough researcher, knowledgeable about numerous subjects.
* BadassCape: As Kaitou Kid, he sports a magnificent white cape. This was the same cape his father wore and usually dramatically flaps in the wind.
* BadassDriver: One at least one occasion, Kaito has shown the ability to drive a car.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Kaito's IconicOutfit is his father's Kaito Kid suit. It is a single jacket entirely white suit. Many consider it to be quite dapper. And also comes with a ''glider''.
* BadassPacifist: {{Averted}}. Kaitou Kid has a [[NobleDemon reputation]] for [[NeverHurtAnInnocent never killing or severely harming innocent people]] while committing his crimes. However, he has enacted violence despite this reputation: during [[TheRival Saguru Hakuba's]] introduction heist, Magic Kaito Chapter 14 ''The Great Detective Appears!!'' Kaito knocks out the police officer he impersonates with a wrench. During the Christmas heist, he bombs a landmark Christmas tree and collapses the building of a shopping center whose owner set up a fake heist to line his own pockets. In ''Detective Conan'' his heists are [[LighterAndSofter usually ''less'' violent]], but he's still done some pretty troubling things: for example, during the Kirin's Horn heist Files 712-715-''Kirin's Horn Case''/Episodes 585-587 ''The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark'', he tasered Conan unconscious to remove him from the situation, even though tasers are excruciatingly painful and potentially lethal to children and those with health problems, of which Conan is currently both. Kaito generally prefers not to use force, though he may, and when he does, he doesn't seem to ''intend'' lethal force, which appears to be why Inspector Nakamori has more [[WorthyOpponent respect]] for him than other criminals.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Aoko -- Personality wise, their relationship seems to have inspired [[Characters/CaseClosedHeijiHattori Heiji Hattori]] and Kazuha Tōyama's: great ChildhoodFriends who tend to argue with each other meanwhile hiding romantic feelings from one another.
* BettyAndVeronica: Kaito is the "Archie" for Aoko's childish, argumentative childhood friend "Betty" and Akako Koizumi mysterious, [[MagicalGirlfriend magical]] "Veronica".
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Especially in his civilian persona, Kaito is almost extremely buffoonish and goofy but possesses an ImprobablyHighIQ and is the second man to become the legendary Kaito Kid.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Kaito can perfectly imitate anyone's voice, even girls and young children. Conan requires a device created by TheProfessor to do that, and when he first witnesses Kaito's ability he is in [[OhCrap complete disbelief]].
* BigGuyLittleGuy: Kaito is the Big Guy to his rival/ally Conan's little guy despite both being the same age.
* BigManOnCampus: Kaito attends Ekoda High School and is extremely popular with his fellow classmates.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Kaito has this dynamic with Shin'ichi Kudō/Conan Edogawa. They are both JerkWithAHeartOfGold protagonists who are confirmed to be {{Teen Genius}}es that are also [[InsufferableGenius very self-impressed]]. At their own high schools they are [[TheAce considered geniuses in their respective fields]] (Kaito - magician, Shin'ichi - detective), something of which they have been interested in since their own childhoods; and because of their respective skills, popularity, and natural good looks, they are both [[ChickMagnet popular with the opposite sex]], [[SingleTargetSexuality but are only interested in the respective childhood best friend]], even if they have a [[BelligerentSexualTension weird way]] of showing it. Currently they are both LivingADoubleLife due to certain circumstances and because of those said circumstances they must keep their [[SecretIdentity identities hidden]], even from their best friend/main love interest. Also, in their new identities, they have their own [[ImprobableWeaponUser very unique signature weapons]] to use in case of danger (Kaito - Card Gun, Shin'ichi - Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt). And their main goal in their own show is to find the BigBad organization responsible for a [[ItsPersonal personal matter]] (Kaito - [[YouKilledMyFather killing his father]], Shin'ichi - attempting to kill him). They even have the same Japanese seiyuu Creator/KappeiYamaguchi.
* BookSmart: [[SmarterThanYouLook Despite not acting it]], Kaito is a genius with perfect grades.
* BrainsVersusBrawn: This is how his [[TheRival rivalry]] with [[WorldsStrongestMan Makoto Kyōgoku]] is structured. Kid's biggest weapon is his mind and he uses it to usually run rings around his opponents. Makato has normal intelligence but his sheer strength is nothing short of superhuman.
* BrainyBrunette: Kaito possesses a IQ of 300 and is characterized by his notable [[MessyHair scruffy mop]] of brown hair.
* ButtMonkey: Especially in his later appearances, Kaito Kid becomes very prone to AmusingInjuries in both his own series and ''Detective Conan''.
** In his very first appearance, File 156-''Chance Meeting''/Episode 76 ''Conan vs. Kaitou Kid'' , he has to jump overboard a cruise to escape Conan.
** Many of his heists turn into a murder thanks to [[MysteryMagnet Conan and/or Kogorō]], which made people naturally suspect him.
** In ''Detective Conan'' episodes 701-704 ''The Jet Black Mystery Train'' , Kaito barely got away from the Bell Tree train because [[spoiler:Vermouth rigged the train with explosives to target Shiho Miyano - who he disguised as because Conan blackmailed him]].
** In ''Detective Conan'' episodes 724-725 ''Kaitou Kid and the Blush Mermaid'' , Kid was chased and attacked by Masumi Sera for tasing her, [[MuggedForDisguise stealing her clothes to impersonate her]] and thinking she was a boy and thus leaving her in the men's restroom.
** In ''Detective Conan'' episodes 746-747 ''Kaitou Kid VS Makoto Kyōgoku'' , Kid was cornered and intimidated by Makoto's incredible strength.
** In ''Detective Conan'' episodes 983-984 ''Kid vs. Kōmei: The Targeted Lips'', Kaito's disguise as Kazuha and his subsequent teasing while taking advantage of it almost made Hattori kiss him and it was only a [[JustInTime timely arrival by Ran and Conan]] that prevented that.
* ByronicHero: {{Subverted}}. Kaito is charismatic, intelligent, yet very smug and driven by the pursuit of justice. Even so, he is not so violent, destructive or brooding and dark as a regular Byronic Hero.
* CallingCard: [[OncePerEpisode At every single heist]] Kaito attempts he leaves behind a card, signaling he has begun his theft. Kid signs his heist notes with a drawing of his face in abstract. He re-draws this insignia for each note, so that the police will know that it was truly him and not an imitator using a scanned copy of a former insignia.
* CanonImmigrant: In Gōshō Aoyama's later work [[Manga/CaseClosed ''Detective Conan'']] he established a SharedUniverse between his two manga Manga/MagicKaito and [[Manga/CaseClosed Detective Conan]] when Kid first appeared in Conan File 156-''Chance Meeting''/Episode 76 ''Conan vs. Kaitou Kid''.
* CannotSpitItOut: While Aoko and Kaito are mutually attracted to one another, neither are aware of that. The finale of Manga/{{Yaiba}} has a scene, set after a three years time skip, where Keiko Momoi tells Sayaka Mine that Kuroba and Nakamori are a couple now, while Keiko's friend confirms having seen them together.
* CatchPhrase: Multiple heists (see ''Kaito Kid's Teleportation Magic'' and ''Kaito Kid and the Siren's Splash'' for two specific examples) see Kid dramatically counting down "Three... Two... One!" [[GratuitousEnglish in English]] to build anticipation before pulling off his trick of the week.
* ChickMagnet: Kaito got a whole bunch of chocolates for Valentine's Day. And he's quite popular with the ladies as Kaitou Kid, both InUniverse and out.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Aoko -- Similar to Shin'ichi and Ran, Kaito and Aoko are childhood friends who met each other at a young age and have crushes on one another.
* ChivalrousPervert: Kaito has a habit of mentally logging information about a girl's panties. He seems to like white ones. However, he proves not to be entirely shameless; for example, in his first appearance in ''Detective Conan'', [[MuggedForDisguise he drugged Ran and disguised himself as her]]. Conan thought he had also stripped her to get her dress [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments and Kaito teased him with the possibility.]] He actually didn't: he was the bellboy who took Ran's cocktail dress to her, and in the meantime he made a copy.
** Also noted he never [[MuggedForDisguise strips down women for his disguises]] normally. The only two exceptions of this were for certain reasons: one because [[LadyLooksLikeADude he thought Masumi Sera was a guy]], the other, Aoko, was the only person he could disguise as at the given moment.
* ClassyCatBurglar: Kaito is a RareMaleExample. He is a charming thief who is very flagrant with his exploits.
* ClothingReflectsPersonality: Kaito's Kaito Kid suit consists of a BadassCap, A Top Hat]], a HighClassGlass and a [[BadassInANiceSuit dapper suit]]. This represents that Kaito Kid carries himself as an elite and high-class criminal even if Kaito does not always live up to said reputation.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Kaito is not going to be merited for his perfect attendance, so when he walked into class on Valentine's Day, he had no idea why all of these girls are suddenly just handing him chocolate for free.
* ColorMotifs: The color Kaito is most associated with [[TropesInWhite is white]]. This represents the almost regality of the Kid persona and matches the color of the doves he commonly utilizes. His [[IconicOutfit signature]] Kaitou Kid suit is almost entirely white.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Kaito Kuroba has many differences to his successor {{Protagonist}} Shin'ichi Kudō/Conan Edogawa. Despite ''[[BirdsOfAFeather numerous]]'' of similarities between the two, they have some key distinctness -- Shin'ichi is a [[AmateurSleuth detective]] who, despite the flair for the dramatic, [[TheStoic is usually serious]] especially on the job; Kaito is a [[PhantomThief thief fashioned as a magician ]] who is well known, in either identity, for [[TheTrickster performing silly, though ingenious tricks]]. The famous high school detective, Shin'ichi, was forced into being the unknown "Conan Edogawa" and tries to take down the organization because two of the members attempted to kill him; the relatively normal Kaito [[CallToAdventure ''chose'']] to become [[LegacyCharacter the new and world famous "Kaitou Kid"]] after learning that the accident [[YouKilledMyFather that took his father's life was staged by an organization]]. Also, Shin'ichi is trying to apprehend the Black Organization through [[TheFettered as much legal means as possible]]; Kaito performs numerous legitimate thefts to catch the men he's looking for (though he ''usually'' returns what he steals, especially as CharacterizationMarchesOn).
* CuteBookworm: Kaito is very well-read and informed and is noted to be quite the looker.
* DisguisedInDrag: As a legendary MasterOfDisguise, Kaito is not adverse to using women disguises when needed and pull it off well:
** In his first ''Detective Conan'' appearance, Episode 76 ''Conan vs. Kaitou Kid'', Kaito steals Sonoko's mother Tomiko's ''very'' expensive black pearl while perfectly disguised as ''Ran''.
** He also disguises himself as a maid when he rescues Jirokichi Suzuki's dog Lupin. {{Lampshaded}} by Conan when he confronts him, who suggests that [[CovertPervert he enjoys crossdressing.]]
** In his own series, he disguised himself as Aoko three separate times. It's also noted he's disguised as her four other times off-screen.
** Played with much later: Kaito [[UndressingTheUnconscious knocks out and strips high school detective Masumi Sera]] to [[MuggedForDisguise disguise himself as her]], leaving her only in her undies... but Sera is such a {{Bifauxnen}} and so flat-chested that he doesn't notice it's a girl. (To be fair, she is wearing boyish underwear and a top without a bra at that moment. He also caught her in the men's restroom, where she slipped in because the girls's restroom was full [[PottyEmergency and she couldn't wait]]) Conan later explains everything, Kaito being left shocked when told Sera's a girl... [[PervertRevengeMode and cue to a very pissed off Sera in her undies drop-kicking him on the head]].
** Kaito's next appearance crossdressing in the ''Detective Conan'' manga, Episode 983-984 ''Kid vs. Kōmei: The Targeted Lips'', involved him disguising as Kazuha and being very smug about the perks of the disguise until he almost has to make out with her [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend not-boyfriend]] Hattori because of it.
* {{Determinator}}: Kaito is extremely persistent in his usual heists as well as his search for his fathers would-be murderers.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Kid is TheProtagonist in his series and TheRival or a HeroAntagonist in ''Detective Conan'' but at times he can be Conan's consistent partner and equal, usually [[RivalsTeamUp against a greater threat]].
* DubNameChange: Kaito is one of the luckier ones, being known as "Kid the Phantom Thief", a literal translation of the word "Kaito", in certain translations.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Kaito characterization has changed ''a lot'' over time. Fans of his [[AdaptationalNiceGuy suave and generally non-violent characterization]] in ''Detective Conan'' are usually shocked at how much of an impulsive, mistake-ridden, and sometimes violent young man Kaito is for much of the earlier manga chapters.
* EncyclopaedicKnowledge: Like most competent detectives in ''Detective Conan'', Kaito has a wealth of knowledge on numerous subjects and topics.
* {{Expy}}: Kaito is an expy of Kaito Lupin, who only appeared in the prototype "Nonchalant Lupin" short story mangaka Gōshō Aoyama published before officially working on Magic Kaito. Kaito Lupin himself is a pretty obvious expy of Literature/ArseneLupin, making Kaito Kuroba an expy of an expy.
* FriendlyEnemy: With Shin'ichi Kudō/Conan Edogawa. They may be adversaries most of the time but act as a good team when the need arises.
* FountainOfExpies: Kaito Kid's popularity has inspired several characters based on him. The most of notable of these is ''Manga/SailorMoon'''s Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba, according to WordOfGod. In the West, Chiba has surpassed his inspiration in terms of popularity to the point that many do not know that he is based on Kid. This is definitely not true in his home country Japan at all, though.
-->'''A:''' "The author of "Manga/SailorMoon" , Takeuchi Naoko-sensei, stated that Tuxedo Mask's model was Kaitou Kid and was glad about it."
* GenerationXerox: Like his father before him, Kaito is the famous master thief, "Kaitou Kid", whose [[TheRival main adversary]] is a genius detective with the last name "Kudō". And despite their conflicting sides, [[WorthyOpponent they have a healthy respect for one another]].
* GentlemanThief: A well-known and popular LoveableRogue thief (and ChickMagnet) who wears a suave, white [[BadassInANiceSuit nice suit]]...even if he is a pervert.
* GoodColorsEvilColors: Despite his breaking of the law, Kaito is ultimately an AntiHero who is suitable [[GoodWearsWhite dressed in a monochrome garb]].
* GoodWearsWhite: Kaito ultimately means no harm as Kaitou Kid; he only wants to find the men who killed his father and steals the most expensive or sought after jewelry, art, etc. in order to do so. However, his constant thefts of them make a lot of police officers consider him nothing but a criminal. Adding to the latter description, it should be noted that in one of Akako's prophesies about him describes him as ''The Sinner in White''.
* GuileHero: While Kaito utilizes a wide range gadgets in his heist, his greatest weapon is his intelligence and sheer wit. This allows him to escape capture and rival geniuses like Conan and Saguru.
* HairstyleInertia: Flashbacks indicate that Kaito retains the same MessyHair from his childhood.
* HeroicLineage: In a fashion. Kaito Kid can be seen as a heroic thief of sorts and the mantle has been passed from Tōichi to his only son Kaito.
* HighClassGlass: Kid is never seen without his iconic monocle adorned to his face. It inspired by the monocle worn by Literature/ArseneLupin.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Kaito dislikes both Akako and Saguru because of their own arrogance, but in reality, Kaito is quite arrogant himself, deserved or not.
* IconicOutfit: The first thing anyone will notice about Kid is his signature brazen, almost gauche, all-white suit and top hat. [[HighlyVisibleNinja This seems highly impractical for a thief]] but Kid points out that people will always look for white when he escapes, allowing him to change into something else while they are looking for him.
* IdenticalStranger: In contrast to many a OneShotCharacter, extras or a {{Gonk}}, mangaka Gōshō Aoyama had a tendency to [[OnlySixFaces draw characters deemed attractive noticeably similar]]. Kaito Kuroba and Shin'ichi Kudō are deliberately drawn and canonically described as looking similar to each other, and the resemblance is strong enough that they can be disguised as one another without too much effort. This is not helped by the two sharing a voice actor, Creator/KappeiYamaguchi. To wit, Kaito has disguised himself as Shin'ichi [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm08MagicianOfTheSilverSky four]] [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm14TheLostShipInTheSky times]] [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm19SunflowersOfInferno in]] [[Anime/DetectiveConanFilm23TheFistOfTheBlueSapphire the]] "Detective Conan" films. Unfortunately not enough to trick Ran the third time.
* IHaveManyNames: Due to his exploits, Kid has come to be known by numerous aliases and monikers. These include:
** "The Magician Under the Moonlight"
** "The Reiwa Magician"
** "The Heisei Lupin"
** "The Last Wizard Of The Century"
** "Kaito 1412"
** "Phantom Thief Kid 1412"
* ImpossibleTheft: Kaitou KID's exploits are performed in amazing ways, such that Shin'ichi (from [[Manga/CaseClosed Detective Conan]] but they share TheVerse) has long since given up on figuring out his identity, focusing more on how he performs his impossible tasks. The biggest thing he has ever stolen is a pair of clock hands from a clock tower. He's literally walked in midair (via WireFu. One time an alibi was established by going on a date and performing his heist, effectively putting him in literally two places at once.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: As Kaitou Kid, his weapon is his signature Card Gun. [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin As its name might imply]], the gun fires a deck of playing cards very rapidly instead of bullets. [[LethalJokeItem When fired from the gun, the cards are not only sharp enough to cut through rope, but also to pierce walls.]]
* ImprobablyHighIQ: Kaito possesses an IQ of 400, as determined [[ArtisticLicenseBiology through DNA testing]].
* InsufferableGenius: With a proven IQ of 400 and an almost superhuman level of wit, Kaito is simply put brilliant and is very much aware of said fact and proud of it.
* InTheBlood: Like his father before him, Kaito is a quick-witted PhantomThief who ends up running circles around the police.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Kaito ultimately has a multitude of vices. He is perverted, arrogant, insensitive and many others. Kaito also genuinely desires to make people happy with his magic, even if his methods are... unconventional.
* JustifiedCriminal: While Kaito has committed multiple crimes, usually theft, he does not do so for sport. Kaito wants to avenge his late father and locate a certain treasure.
* KarmicThief: {{Downplayed}}. Those whom Kaito steals from a rarely bad people, [[SmugSnake but a lot are extremely overconfident in their ability to defeat Kid]].
* LatexPerfection: Perfection cannot be understated. Kaito is capable of perfectly assuming the identity of essentially anyone with his disguise abilities.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Over the years, Kid has had numerous themes accompanying his entrances. The are all compiled in[[https://youtu.be/GS2lSSZXSsg this video]].
* LegacyCharacter: Before him, Kaito's father Tōichi was the famous PhantomThief Kaito Kid. His son took up the mantle after his presumed death.
* LivingADoubleLife: To his classmates, Kaito is an arrogant ClassClown with a fondness for magic. To the world at large, Kaito Kid is the Modern Day Lupin, a master thief capable of stealing anything and outwitting law enforcement. In actuality, they are one in the same.
* LoveableRogue: Even though he's a wanted criminal by the police, the citizens all ''love'' Kaitou Kid, with even Inspector Nakamori and Conan taking note on some of his good points, even if they're still intent on arresting him. And even in his normal identity as Kaito, he's quite likable and popular, in spite of his perverted antics.
* MadeOfIron: Particularly in the early manga, where AmusingInjuries abounded. Even in the later, more serious chapters, however, this trait never quite faded; the ''Sun Halo'' arc, for one, has him taking ''a shard of broken glass'' to the gut and still staying conscious and coordinated long enough to pull off one of his trademark disguise switcheroos.
* MagicianDetective: At times, Kaito has been known to use his intellect as a thief to solve things. Main example -- the Golden Eye heist. Plus various other incidences.
* MasterOfDisguise: Arguably, Kaito's most remarkable trait is his prowess for disguise. With little time and preparation, he can perfectly take on the likeness of virtually anyone. He can improvise to make a believable impersonation, even those that are shorter than him. More than just mimicking their frame and face, Kaito excels in perfectly imitating their voice, including accent and dialect. Also thorough is his performance, that he can effectively act like the person, copying their mannerisms, demeanor, speech patterns, ideology, and so on. Ultimately, he can fool even the people closest to his chosen imitation for hours without failing in the deception.
** In one case, he goes from Nakamori to [[SerialEscalation Genta (a young child)]] to Kaitou Kid to a random police guy within minutes, all with the appropriate clothing, perfectly imitated voices and even the stamp on his cheek that Nakamori previously placed on everyone in the room ''except him''.
* MasterOfUnlocking: As a thief, Kaito possesses a notable and necessary prowess for picking locks.
* MeaningfulName:
** The name "Kaito" means "kite". It is written differently [[AlternateCharacterReading (i.e. is a different kanji)]] than the word "kaitou", which means "phantom thief."
** "Kuroba" means black feather, referencing his black hair and duel magpie/dove bird motifs
*** The word "clover" is also pronounced "kuroba" in Japanese. A four-leaf clover appears on the tag of Kid's monocle.
* MessyHair: Kaito is characterized by his uncombed, mop of black hair.
* MinorLivingAlone: Kaito Tōichi father died years ago and his mother Chikage is almost always [[WhenYouComingHomeDad away traveling]].
* {{Motifs}}: Kaito is [[CosmicMotifs strongly associated with the Moon]]. His wardrobe is almost completely white (the color of the moon), his heists are almost always at night time (when the moon appears), one of his [ IHaveManyNames numerous]] [[RedBaron aliases]] is "The Magician Under the Moonlight", and a symbol for the moon could be mystery (a trait he is as Kaitou Kid).
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: Well, never hurt a bystander, more like. Kaitou KID has, to the knowledge of the police, never killed or permanently harmed anyone. It's one of the reasons Nakamori has ''some'' respect for him. [[spoiler:In fact, the reason for his injury in the ''Sun Halo'' arc was because he was saving Aoko from getting hurt from slipping into the pitfall trap meant for him.]] However, he has bombed buildings and has a record of assault, including several counts of assault of a minor where Conan's involved. He's also known to have beaten a policeman with a wrench to the point of incapacitation and unconsciousness.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Despite Kaito and Shin'ichi meeting by complete coincidence as KID and Conan with no knowledge of any personal connection, Kaito's father Tōichi was Shin'ichi's mother Yukiko's mentor and Shin'ichi's father Yusaku's rival and best friend, and in the ''Manga/MagicKaito'' anime adaptation, Shin'ichi's [[HonoraryUncle surrogate uncle]], Agasa, is heavily implied to be the long-time friend of Jii, Kaito's surrogate grandfather, as well as the supplier of the gear Jii gives Kaito to help with magic tricks, which Kaito uses on his heists.
* PaperThinDisguise: Really, the only thing that remotely hides his identity is the fact that he often wears the brim of his hat in such a way that his eyes are slightly hidden in shadow. It's a miracle as to why he hasn't been figured out at this point (though his status as a MasterOfDisguise makes it a tiny bit more plausible). Granted, in one chapter/episode Inspector Nakamori does see Kaito's face and links him with Kaitou Kid... only for Kaito to slip away again. The fact his name has nearly identical pronunciation (despite the different kanji spelling) as his alter ego does not help his case.
** [[spoiler: He uses this to his advantage by disguising himself as Aoko the next night and convinces Nakamori he was pretending to be his daughter and his daughter's best friend to mess with him.]] And considering Kaitou KID is known for his disguises, it's not unjustified for onlookers to assume he is always wearing someone else's face.
** Ironically, this does help him much later on [[spoiler: when Aoko is able to remove his hat in the ''Sun Halo'' arc... and rather than thinking he really is Kaito, accuses him of using his face to mock her. Heck, even when Aoko does begin to suspect the connection between the two, it's for completely different reasons.]]
* PhantomThief: Kaito Kid is a professional thief and it is his mission to steal as many valuables as he can so he can verify if they are the one he's actually looking for.. He's even 'stolen' [[MonumentalTheft a clock tower]]. His manga was all about the various comedic exploits he would get into as he ran from the police until CerebusSyndrome set in.
* PhotographicMemory: Kaito has the ability to memorize very complicated facts in short periods of time. This usually gets put to use in helping him create his disguises.
** This is once [[FlawExploitation used against him]] by Shin'ichi, who has the cops ask him for the driver's license number of the policeman he is impersonating, something most people would not have memorized. Kaito had memorized it and rattles it off, outing himself as KID in disguise.
* PlayfulHacker: Kid has shown a proficiency in hacking, being able to bend machines to his whims.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: Not intentionally. Kaito's first name is a homophone for the name of his thief persona, but it reality they [[AlternateCharacterReading are spelled differently and mean different things]].
* RedBaron: Kaito Kid is known by a multitude of aliases, which are occasionally used in lieu of his real name.
* RenaissanceMan: Kaito has a wide range of skills which contribute to the sole purpose of being a PhantomThief. He is a ventriloquist, a magician, a master of disguise and has excellent deductive skills on par with Saguru, Shin'ichi or Hattori. He has excellent athletic abilities and can play almost any sport. He can drive any vehicle and can bypass most security systems easily.
* TheRival: In ''Magic Kaito'', he and Saguru Hakuba are always at each others' throats, trying to outsmart one another at every given opportunity.
** In ''Detective Conan'', Kid and Conan are also rivals. Ever since Kaito met Conan, Kaito always seems to be anticipating Conan's appearance at his heists. Conan makes the heists more interesting for Kaito, while Conan views Kaito's heists as entertainment.
** Makoto Kyōgoku is a hig-school karateka renowned for his [[SuperStrength superhuman strength]]. He is dubbed the "Ultimate Security System" and has guarded valuables from Kid. Makoto's seemingly limitless strength is matched only by Kid's sheer genius.
** Jirokichi Suzuki is Sonoko's paternal uncle and a general adviser for her father's financial corporation, second in power and wealth only to [[spoiler:Ren'ya Karasuma]]. Suzuki decided he was going to be rivals with Kid when one of the thief's exploits pushed the newspaper article of Jirokichi's man-powered solo plane ride around the world to third story. Jirokichi anticipates that outsmarting and capturing Kaitou Kid will be the pinnacle of his many accomplishments to date and the jewel the autobiographical movie he plans to make.
* SecretIdentity: Kid's identity is a complete mystery to his loved ones though some have become suspicious.
* SharpDressedMan: Kid is always adorned with a rather dapper all-white suit and tie.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: Kaito has shared the same voice actor as Shin'ichi Kudō since Kid debuted on television in 1997's Episode 76 ''Conan vs. Kaitou Kid'', Creator/KappeiYamaguchi.
* TakingUpTheMantle: Kaito discovers his father's identity as the original Kaitou Kid after eight years following his death thanks to a secret room inside his house as well as talking with his father's attendant and friend, Konosuke Jii. Picking up where his father left off, Kaito takes up the mantle of Kaitou Kid in an effort to lure out his father's murderers by making Kid a world-famous thief once again.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: According to Hakuba, Kaito stands at 5'8 and is noticed for his good looks by the opposite sex, InUniverse and out.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Kaito is especially defined by his height, his messy mop of black and his extremely quick tongue.
* TeenGenius: Kaito posses an IQ of 400 and despite his age, his intelligence surpasses adults.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Kaito Kid keeps a staunch CodeOfHonor. He refuses to kill anyone and that even includes the organizations he believes murdered his father.
* TheTrickster: Kaito loves to play tricks on everybody around him, especially Aoko; his favorite one is checking the color of girls' panties.
* {{Tsundere}}: To Aoko. Type B. Kaito switch in wholesome and cold jerk moods with her.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: Played with. Rather than serving as an ironic visual contrast between the clothes and the black-hearted character wearing them, as is typical of the trope, the white of Kaito's suit serves partially to reflect his perceived moral difference with other criminals; Kaito himself says that his suit is white because he's "bold and flamboyant" and he's "different to a thief who wears all black." Conan, however, points out a more pragmatic reason for a magician thief to wear a white suit: during Kaito's many disappearing tricks, he can just switch to more discreet clothing, and while everybody around him is looking out for something white, he can abscond unnoticed.
* VillainProtagonist: Played with through his roles as both AntiHero and AntiVillain. Kaito steals as Kaitou KID and has caused many incidents of property damage and assault in the process, as well as generally making trouble for the police, for the sake of trying to bait and eventually get "vengeance" on the murderous criminals who killed his father, probably by getting them caught by the police. His gun is only a trick prop, and he has on a few occasions even gone out of his way to protect bystanders near him. Since he's also looking for a very specific item, he typically returns the goods he's stolen after determining they aren't what he wants.
* VoiceChangeling: Kaito is exceptional in perfectly imitating his target's voice, including accent and dialect. This is a skill he trained himself to do without any gadgets.
* WickedCultured: An AntiHero/AntiVillain example. Kaito is a very good researcher, as when preparing to become someone else, he is very thorough.
* WhiteGloves: Kid noticeably always wears a pair of white gloves as part of his costume.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Kaito has an irrational and completely unexplained fear of fish. Even dead ones.
* WorthyOpponent: With all his major rivalries, there is always a sense of hidden respect toward the other as opposed to hostility or jealously.
* YouKilledMyFather: Kaito's main motivation against the bad guys is to get them back for murdering his father onstage and [[MakeItLookLikeAnAccident playing it up as an accident]].

Since Kaito weighs 58kg, and it can be assumed that he is wearing his entire heist outfit including the hangglider beneath his waterproof suit, the 65kg heavy Saguru needs to be fairly strong to lift KID for as long as he did without breaking a sweat. And he joked about carrying his rival all the way to the police headquarters, implying that he can do this for longer than actually shown. Up until this chapter, there was no indication that Saguru was particularly strong aside from having broad shoulders.

Nevertheless, people continue to portray him as more arrogant than Kaito, Shinichi, and Heiji combined, even though the canonical basis for this has been outdated for almost 30 years.

The Mean Brit is now a disambig

* TheMeanBrit: Downplayed. He's more smug than Shinichi, Heiji, and Kaito '''combined''', but he's not all the way bad. For example, in the Detective Koushien case, in ''Detective Conan'', he frequently mocked Heiji, calling him rash and hotheaded and repeatedly expressed his disappointment in Heiji's seeming incompetence, and despite being clearly defeated by Heiji's deduction, he showed no such regrets or humility.
