Almost everyone in Polar Star Dormitory used to admire him, even Azami. During his second year, he was popular and dreaded at the same time throughout Tōtsuki. Even in the present day, he is very popular with Sōma's friends at the Polar Star Dorm. Erina idolizes him as well. Senzaemon respects him and his cooking almost always receives praise from famous gourmets.
** The only one who didn't like Jōichirō was Jun Shiomi, because back in her school days, he would use her as a test subject for his disgusting dishes. Still she does seem to hold some respect for Jōichirō.

* AffablyEvil: As badly and dismissively as he treats anyone who actually wants to compete with him, he's shown to be genuinely friendly outside of the subject of cooking challenges. Even though his becoming an instructor at Toosuki was only a pretext to court Erina, he quickly gains a reputation of his lessons being easy to understand, and he can be genuinely charming to the point that Erina isn't willing to shut down all his attempts to socialize with her.
