* AmbiguousDisorder: Subverted; certain characters will call it gynophobia. [[spoiler:However, the circumstances behind why he has it and physical symptoms he suffers make it sound very much like PTSD.]]

* DislikesTheNewGuy: Towards Robin at the beginning of the game. While the other Shepherds are quick to welcome them to the group, as [[TheHero Chrom's]] bodyguard, he is proud to say he's wary of an amnesiac hyper-intelligent warrior joining their ranks out of the blue. The Avatar turns out to be [[spoiler:the Avatar of the Fell Dragon Grima, the BigBad and Chrom's killer in an alternate BadFuture]], but also a loyal member of the Shepherds and good friend [[spoiler:in this timeline]]. It does however say something when [[spoiler:the Avatar's true nature is revealed, Frederick is actually one of the first people to reassure the Avatar that he still trusts them despite everything]].

* GoshDangItToHeck: When he doesn't believe the fact that the Avatar has amnesia. This is also one of the first things we hear him say.

* InnocentlyInsensitive: To the Avatar in their B support, where he compliments them for their ability to eat bear meat, but makes it sound like they're an uncultured savage, which they even [[LampshadeHanging comment on]].

* NervesOfSteel: Lampshaded by Avatar regarding the jokes he gets from Chrom and Lissa. Although he claims to get it all out of his system when there aren't people looking.

** His supports with Avatar reveal that he can't stand bear meat himself, despite chiding Lissa for refusing to eat it.

* OddFriendship: Two of the three non-Avatar units the stern and dutiful Frederick has platonic supports with include [[TheDandy Virion]] and ''[[CreepyGood Henry]]'', of all people.

* PickyEater: Surprisingly, he hates gamey meat, especially bear. He feels this is a weakness that needs to be corrected in his supports with the Avatar.

* ProperlyParanoid: His mistrust of the people that Chrom and Lissa meet is not entirely unfounded. For instance, he was technically right about [[spoiler:the Avatar being a Plegian]], though at first it looked like he was just being paranoid.

* UnwantedAssistance: Frederick's attempts to help others sometimes backfire horribly. Of particular note is his C support with Chrom, where he tries to raise troop morale by sticking posters of Chrom '''[[NakedPeopleAreFunny naked]]''' in every tent. Labeled [[DoubleEntendre "Chrom Wants You!"]] When told to tone down the helping, he has a small psychological breakdown, and ends up trying to dust the Avatar when they are trying to have a meeting with Chrom. * ClassyCravat: And proud of it too, as he becomes quite insulted when the Avatar calls it a bib in their B support. Sully even calls him "Ruffles" when she first meets him because of it. However, he's not wearing a cravat: He's actually wearing a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabot_(neckwear) Jabot]].

** He also is able to beat the Avatar at chess (or something similar to it). However, in his B support with them, he points out that despite the Avatar never being able to beat him, it's because the Avatar plays this game the way they do with a real army - trying to keep losses at a minimum. Virion can ''only'' win because he is willing to make sacrifices and [[PyrrhicVictory can only win at a cost]]. Despite being an absolute ace at chess, he ''knows'' that this is ''not'' how you lead an army because war is ''not'' a game, he would have a ZeroPercentApprovalRating were he to lead a real army like this.

* PyrrhicVictory: The reason why, despite being a skilled tactician, he never tries to take the Avatar's role. He gets too many of his men killed achieving any specific objective, as opposed to the Avatar's (and likely the player's) reluctance to sacrifice so much as a single unit. He's better suited to board games then he is actual combat situations where real lives are at risk.
* ThisIsReality: When the Avatar mentions that Virion should be the tactician and not them, Virion proceeds to give the Avatar a speech about how he is only able to win because this is a ''game''. In the real world, this would not be the case. See SmartPeoplePlayChess.

* SmartPeoplePlayChess: Or something like it or Risk at least, though, to everyone's surprise, his strategy is that of a CombatPragmatist. He's actually able to beat the Avatar, the party's actual tactician, at it. Virion counters the Avatar's dejection at losing at their best subject by pointing out his strategies only work in a game, stating that if he tried to use any of those strategies in real life, he'd end up with a ZeroPercentApprovalRating and/or his head on a pike by his own men as it would be a PyrrhicVictory at best with most of his own troops dead.

* HiddenDepths: He is not as completely self-centered or dull-witted as one would think. He can come up with pretty honest compliments about the Avatar in Tharja's support, and genuinely wants to help the reclusive Lon'qu socialize with other members of the army.

* ImAManICantHelpIt: His justification when the Avatar catches him peeping on bathing women.

* ThePeepingTom: His supports with the Avatar chronicle his attempts to peep on the ladies bathing. His A support gives him a taste of his own medicine [[LaserGuidedKarma when said ladies spy on ''him'']].
** BadLiar: He ''tries'' to lie his way out of it when the Avatar catches him.

* HiddenDepths: He has a talent for being able to read others easily and knowing what they want before they even ask. Not that he even takes advantage of it, instead it supplements his considerate and thoughtful nature. His C support with the Avatar also reveals he's a skilled apothecary as his father runs a shop and taught him.

* NiceGuy: To the point where various characters either tell him that he doesn't give himself enough credit or don't believe he has no ulterior motives for being so nice. The Avatar in their A Support has them assuring that they will always look out for him like he does for everyone else.

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Fried fig cakes, according to his support with the Avatar.

* BloodKnight: Played for laughs in his supports with the player avatar, who insists Ricken spends most of his time in battle dismembering opponents and suggests Ricken write home to his parents to tell them the battlefield ran red with the blood of his enemies.

* JackOfAllStats: His growths are quite balanced compared to your typical Mage, though his defenses are still rather [[SquishyWizard poor]]. Notably, Ricken does boast the highest Magic modifier among all the male units (barring the Avatar).

* HollywoodPudgy: Gaius is supposedly a bit out of shape thanks to his constant candy snacking. His C support with the Avatar mentions that he is "usually in much better shape", while his support with Cordelia establishes him as a slob who doesn't take care of his appearance. His BeachEpisode outfits in both ''Awakening'' and ''Heroes''... doesn't really reflect that. [[invoked]]

* MarkOfShame: Has a convict tattoo. In his support conversations with the Avatar, he's embarrassed enough when they see it that he automatically assumes that they're going to blackmail him, and refuses to accept it when they explain that they aren't. As he explains in his A support conversation, he does believe it, but he feels like he needs to pay them off somehow. He's also implied to cover it up with a handkerchief in his Summer Scramble CG, and this carries over to his Summer variant in ''Heroes'', who is wearing the same outfit.

* TheNicknamer: In the localized version of the game Gaius often refers to people by nicknames instead of using their given names during Support Conversations. He likes to give the other characters friendly nicknames, like "Bubbles" for Avatar, "[[CuteClumsyGirl Stumbles]]" for Sumia, "Twinkles" for Maribelle, "Whiskers" for Panne, [[IronicNickname "Sunshine"]] for [[DarkActionGirl Tharja]], "Baby" for [[ProneToTears Olivia]], "Padre" for Libra, "Specs" for Miriel, "Princess" for Lissa, or "Blue" for Chrom.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Gregor's flirting in the support conversations with the Avatar is the same whether the Avatar is a man or a woman. There's also the fact that he really seemed to enjoy dressing Ricken up in a dress and parading him around as his girlfriend...

** In his support with the Avatar, Gregor suggests ways for them to keep up their health... such as [[IntimateHealing sharing body heat with him in bed.]]

* ThirteenIsUnlucky: His birthday is on 13th of November, and he joins in Chapter 13; if the Avatar is a male, then he will be your 13th male unit. Comes with a side of irony, considering it's World Kindness Day. Then again, [[NiceGuy Henry's also genuinely nice]], [[CreepyGood if a bit odd]].

* GoodParents: In all of his paired endings[[note]]With the exception of the Avatar's, which is always the same (though nothing says he wouldn't be this to Morgan anyway)[[/note]], it's stated that he turns out to be a "surprisingly good father". He's the only character ''explicitly said'' by the game to be this. In fact, upon meeting his future child, he immediately shows his own [[CreepyGood unique]] brand of fatherly devotion:

* PapaWolf: In Owain's B support with his father, they are surrounded by enemy archers. With other fathers (including the likes of Lon'qu and the Avatar), they both make a hasty retreat. Henry though? He will tell Owain to go on without him as he takes care of the archers. He then proceeds to kill them all ''single handedly''. It's also implied that he managed to do so without a scratch.

** His supports with the Avatar also reveal he eventually learns how to summon Risen (albeit without control over them) and send them against their enemies. Sadly, [[GameplayAndStorySegregation he can't do this in actual combat]]. Of course, the Avatar specifically orders him not to, considering the Risen would eventually start tearing into nearby towns.

* CannotSpitItOut: In his supports with Female Robin, he keeps trying to recruit her as his tactician, and then as his ''toady'' (which the Avatar is rather insulted by). In his S support he reveals that what he ''really'' wanted her for was to be his wife.

* SecretCharacter: Every [=SpotPass=] Paralogue character. Priam especially stands out, as while the other [=SpotPass=] characters have roles in the main story, Priam is only found through the chapter he's recruited from, and his presence was only hinted by the fact that his voice actor was credited in the credits and that he could support with the Avatar and Male Morgan (if he is the father).

* BattleCouple: Can be paired with any female first generation character, except Sumia, Anna, Say'ri, Tiki, and Flavia or the female [[SecretCharacter SpotPass characters]]. He is the only optional first generation party member to not be restricted to the Avatar in fact, but supports equally (slowly) with all marriageable females.

* BornLucky: In-game he's the only character that is guaranteed to cap Luck without grinding to full level, and he has a ridiculously high cap for it as a Villager.[[note]]To be more specific, he starts off with around 12 Luck at level one, compared to Luck-Asset Avatars who usually need some time to get that high, and thanks to Aptitude, he has the highest Luck growth rate at 100%, compared to the second highest of a few other characters at 80%[[/note]]

* MagikarpPower: He has pitiful starting stats but comes with Aptitude, which increases ALL of his growth rates by 20% without penalty. He's extremely difficult to train as a Villager, but can become ''incredibly'' powerful. And unlike many other cases in the series, this is actually built into his character too; the sidequest you get him in focuses on him overcoming his fears of being useless, and ''getting him to level up at least once'' is how you recruit him. He's one of the most powerful non-Avatar or Morgan characters in the game if you promote him.

* TrainingFromHell: Having him as a sparring partner is supposedly brutal, according to his support with the male Avatar and event tiles with his children. Sully and the female Avatar are rather offended when he can't spar with them at the level he normally would be due to his gynophobia.

* WhenHeSmiles: His support with the Female Avatar has her making it a goal to try and make him laugh.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Notably with the Female Avatar, as their clashing of personalities has some effect on distracting him from his phobia. [[spoiler:S-Rank proves it to be [[LoveEpiphany more effective than either of them anticipated]].]]

* TheGadfly: Some definite shades of this. He certainly does like to troll people, like the female Avatar or Chrom in the DLC Scramble packs, but not out of any malicious intent. He just likes teasing people. Very prominent in his supports with Tharja, as his responses to her threatening to curse him boils down to "Bring it."

* ReincarnationRomance: Though not as heavily implied as with Robin/Corrin, Cordelia/Caeldori and Tharja/Rhajat, it is implied that Asugi is the past life/reincarnation of Gaius in ''Fates'', making this trope possible if you pair him up with the female Avatar, Cordelia/Caeldori or Tharja/Rhajat.

* StupidSexyFlanders: In his B Support Conversation with Male Avatar. Male Avatar claims he's been having weird dreams about Gregor after drinking one of his health drinks where he dreamt that he was sleeping with his head on Gregor's lap. Ever since then he's been afraid to go to bed. [[spoiler:Turns out, Male Avatar had contracted some kind of disease after being bitten by a millipede]].

* JackOfAllStats: A magical one, as his modifiers are not that impressive, save for one point in magic in a game where most males either have it unchanged or have a bad one. He does have the best Resistance out of the male first-gen characters (Male Avatar excepted).

* BattleCouple: Potentially with a female Avatar if S Support is achieved.

* CannotSpitItOut: In his supports with the female Avatar, he keeps trying to recruit her as his tactician, and then as his ''toady'' (which the Avatar is rather insulted by). In his S support he reveals that what he ''really'' wanted her for was to be his wife.

* NoodleIncident: He promises to tell the male Avatar a funny story involving a cat and a sandbag.

Henry's response to this is a very telling VisibleSilence.

* HalfWittedHillbilly: He starts out as this, what with being BookDumb FarmBoy, though, with the right choices, he can graduate to a SouthernFriedGenius.

* BaldOfAwesome: Of all the playable characters in the game, he's the only bald guy. And he's tough as nails.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Borderline sky blue, as well.

* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Against Stahl's low expectations in himself, Chrom says he's one of the Shepherds' best knights, and Sully tells him that he's the better rider out of the two of them.
