Edited by Kuruniopen New crowner for Getting Crap Past the Radar TRS
There's a new single-prop crowner for the Getting Crap Past the Radar TRS thread. It's to determine whether the trope should only have on-page examples until June 2021, and then permanently if it's not being used correctly. If you want to vote on it, now's the time.
Please do not reply to this thread. This is an effort to draw attention to an important crowner in TRS.
openUnintentionally Sympathetic change
YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 9 E 25 The Ending Of The End Part 2
- Unintentionally Sympathetic:
- Many fans view Cozy Glow as this due to the fact that we never found out her backstory or why she was so evil, and that she's a child who was never offered a chance to seek redemption, either now or during her original banishment to Tartarus in Season 8. The fact that she and Tirek came close to reforming in "Frenemies", and that she looks terrified as the petrification takes effect, makes it worse. It doesn't help that she and Tirek are technically victims of entrapment due to Discord freeing them from Tartarus and tempting them with Grogar's bell so he could make them attack Equestria and give Twilight a confidence boost for defeating them, and, as far as she's concerned, by this point her choices are rather limited: either embrace villainy and take down Equestria or return to her apparently indefinite imprisonment in Tartarus.
- To a much lesser extent than Cozy Glow, some have expressed a small amount of sympathy for Chrysalis and Tirek as well due to their character development throughout the season, and the fact that it was Discord who put them in this situation. In Tirek's particular case, like Cozy, he was already serving his sentence in Tartarus before being forcefully broken out by Discord. While it's generally agreed that he and his co-conspirators are monsters, some argue that turning him into stone instead of sending him back to Tartarus was unnecessary, especially since his crimes weren't really any worse than in season 4, and he stood down when defeated. As for Chrysalis, she lost her mind in exile after her hive turned against her (though that was mostly her own fault) and even seemed to have a degree of genuine respect for her comrades, even saving their lives in "Frenemies", on top of having never attempted any betrayal against them, so her final fate can be seen as a bit saddening to some.
I indent to edit this down but there's a note on the page saying to discuss changes in ATT first. How is this?
- Unintentionally Sympathetic: Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow's actions were supposed to prove them Beyond Redemption with their being Taken for Granite a deserved Fate Worse than Death ensuring they would never threaten anyone again. But Discord, as Grogar, recruited and threatened them into partaking in an identical Evil Plan that was supposed to end with them identically defeated without giving them a chance to redeem themselves as Discord was. Thus several saw the villains fate unfair as they were forced into a position where they would have been punished as harshly even if they haven't willingly and independently committed such evildoing. Not helping is they had brief Pet the Dog moments toward each other suggesting they could have been redeemable if not for no-one attempting to encourage it. Cozy Glow got this extra hard as she was already seen a Unintentionally Sympathetic for her prior evildoing with the issue persisting hereexplaination never questioning why the child was so evil and if they had any mitigating backstory along with her having committed fewer acts of evildoing than Tirek and Chrysalis without establishing why it was worse yet is identically punished.
Anything else to add to this while we're here?
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenNeed advice on how to deal with a certain troper.
From what I understand, this is where you go to report tropes you're having problems with, so I've decided to come here for advice.
Back in July, I came across a troper by the name of Shin Minase, whose edits seemed to have a lot of problems (namely misusing tropes and making examples that seemed like stretches of the trope). However, it seemed like they had only recently made an account, so I thought I'd just correct their edits and see if they improved over time.
After a few months, I've not seen much improvement in their edits, as they still contain a number of problems (namely, blatant misuse of tropes, placing aversions on main trope pages, misusing the terms subversion and justified, and adding examples that largely rely on speculation). Most recently, they made an edit to Red Herring for A Song of Ice and Fire. Once again, the edit is one that relies on speculation of future events, however, they also hid the example, which, as far as I'm aware, is breaking the rules.
I'll admit that I probably should have done this previously, but after watching this go on for several months, I've finally decided to come here to get advice on how to deal with this.
Edited by lpk675openPronoun edit war
Hi, in the page One Piece: Animal Kingdom Pirates there's the character Yamato who, long story short, has an ambiguous gender identity and there's been quite a bit of edit war for which pronoun use. However, since the other characters refer to Yamato with male pronouns, in the end we sticked with male and I added a warning to mantain them until proven otherwise and that any other pronoun change would be called edit-warring
However, troper Ctrooper 2018 removed the warning and switched all of the pronouns to female without any explanation...

There is a trope called "Impossibly Delicious Food". With it is a request not to add real-life examples. I think the durian fruit from Southeast Asia should be added. It tastes like almond custard, but smells like raw sewage. What does anyone else think?
openEdit War in YMMV/CaptainAmericaCivil War Film
Ken Craig added an entry about They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character for Miles Morales in Captain America Civil War which was then deleted by Cornholio 4 for misuse since the character never even shows up in the film. Ken Craig then added it back, seemingly ignoring the previous note.

SERIOUSLY, you destroyed the Nightmare Fuel page of Last Week Tonight!?!

openUseful Notes cleanup?
Is there a cleanup thread for Useful Notes pages? I wasn't able to find one.
I ask because there are parts of UsefulNotes.Chinese Dialects And Accents that seem to contradict each other or mislead regarding the use of the term "dialect".
According to the labelnote, the word translated as "dialect" actually has a broader meaning in the original language, which would make this an issue of translation. But the first paragraph implies that the issue with the accuracy of "dialect" lies in the original language(s). In particular, "they continued to call them dialects even after they became mutually unintelligible" implies that they were also calling them "dialects" before they became mutually unintelligible.
If it's referring to what "dialects" were called in the original language(s), then this contradicts the later paragraph about the original term being broader than the English term. If it's referring to what the term was translated to in English, then that also doesn't make sense given the timeframe in question, and is misleading by centering the discussion of meaning on the English translation.
According to Wikipedia
However, the way the Useful Notes page explains this is misleading by conflating it with translation.

Edited by Julayla64openIs Epileptic Trees too weird of a name?
I feel like the name for Epileptic Trees is really strange. Unless you’re well versed on Lost theories, the title just seems like it’s talking about... well, trees with epilepsy. Maybe the title should be something simpler like Zany Theory?
If no one else feels this way, then it’s fine, but I feel like it’s a case of Trope-Namer Syndrome.
Edited by audgetroubleopen character cares for other secretly and then is revealed
QUEENS GAMBIT NETFLIX SERIES SPOILERS AHEAD:
Hello all, so I was wondering if there is a name for the following trope:
- The protagonist discovers that a character from the past was "secretly" following his work/admiring him, or doing something for his well being secretly, so it is very powerful (sometimes after death or separation)
(this happens on Last episode of Queens Gambit series, when Beth goes to the basement again and finds out Mr Sheibel was following her career). This was so powerful to me, broke me into tears.
Also happens on other movies for example when the protagonist find his best friend is secretly reading a book to improve relationship, or help cancer patients, etc
Didn't find this trope on tvtropes website so I was wondering does it even exists? Thanks!
