Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

My only counterargument to that point on Jack is that I don't think that moment was an Even Evil Has Standards moment. The look itself is in this flash and only lasts for a second before PM (the white dog) goes back to chasing Jack and it's not brought up again. Looks more like shock to me.

Also, what was actually done was no more heinous than what Jack had done/intended to do (it murders several alternate versions of the humans and trolls), so if it is an Even Evil Has Standards moment, it's a pretty hypocritical one.

Now for a more thorough effort post on Dick Coonan:

Dick Coonan from the second season Castle episode "Sucker Punch" is a former Special Operations soldier who after that became a high-grade hitman. He was hired by Senator William Bracken to assist in his drug operation with Vulcan Simmonds. The money he makes is attributed to philanthropy work as a cover. On orders, he killed four different people seeking to expose the operation, including Johanna Beckett. He used a special knife that, while small, made deep wounds. It could be speculated that while only one stab is fatal, he would make multiple wounds beforehand just to inflict pain. He likely sought to make each killing look like random violence though and use the multiple wounds as cover. On behalf of his bosses, he forced Johnny Vong to smuggle the drugs into the country with the packaging from his self-help DV Ds and made him so afraid that he was willing to go to prison to avoid Coonan killing him. When Coonan's own brother Jack, who's in the Irish mob, discovers that Coonan is involved in the drugs and tries to blackmail him to stop, he kills Jack in the same manner as the others. When his involvement in the drug work is exposed and he comes under fire for it, he agrees to give up the killer he calls "Rathborne" only under the condition that he be given full immunity. When he's discovered as the true killer all along, he takes Richard Castle hostage at gunpoint, threatening to shoot him in the liver so he'll die a slow, painful death unless he gets to walk out. He also agrees to give up who hired him to Kate Beckett in exchange for getting him out too. He says that killing her mother wasn't personal, but he does not seem to regret doing it. When an altercation occurs in which Coonan nearly shoots Castle, Beckett shoots and kills Coonan.

He may be heinous enough, but even then there are others far worse than him that don't count. That being said, though many of his crimes are pragmatic, he clearly does them with a cold ruthlessness and detachment. I'm not gonna vote yet, but I know where I stand and my position is not likely to change.

Wow, unless we get a flood of new effortposts and entries, this will be a fairly light week. So far, we've got Yhwach; J. Killian (plus Caesar, assuming he gets approved); The Pale Lady (she had been approved, but never got a writeup); Mr. Smith; Ewell's tweaked entry; and Silver Odysseus. Only 7 (of course, that was about what we had last week before Lighty's group [lol] ).
[up] If there are others who are worse, then he can't count (even if the others have mitigating factors) unless it's a matter of resources.

[up] I'll probably have a few more by this weekend. I'm still in the process of binge-watching Strike Back, and there's at least one villain I'll end up effortposting.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

[up][up][up] I'm almost certainly going to have a candidate from an anime a few days from now. There's also a few other films I'm planning on watching so I guess I'll propose any contenders I find from there.

Regarding the Pale Lady: I PM'd the troper in question, but only got a laconic answer asking where precisely it says the write up itself has to go through here as well.

If it's not been done properly until I've managed to read the book(s), I'll have a go at it myself. But that's potentially months away.

Got one here that I'm pretty sure hasn't been discussed:

Dino Geist from Brave Exkaiser.

Who is he?

Dino Geist is the captain of the universe's most infamous Space Pirates, the Geisters. Having traveled the universe ravaging and pillaging planets, the Geisters arrive on Earth being chased by the Space Police lead by Exkaiser.

While his minions are Laughably Evil (much to his annoyance), Dino Geist himself is a dead serious monster motivated by Greed and Revenge. While most of his plans revolve around stealing things (no matter how many humans get hurt or killed in the process, which considering many of those plans consist of destroying large portions of human cities, is quite high) to sell on the cosmic black market (or kidnap people he could trade for it), on occasion he's done atrocities purely out of spite at Exkaiser and company for thwarting his plans. In one such occurrence, he attempts to cause Mt. Fuji to erupt, which would kill many and cause massive damage, all just to get revenge on the Kaisers by harming the humans they care so much about (note, in real life this would put around 8 million people in jeopardy).

He also captures on of Exkaiser's crewmates, Sky Max, and threatens to kill him if the Kaisers don't retrieve a deadly virus he's attempting to steal, and then attempts to kill him in cold blood anyway when he gets what he wanted, something he repeats later on when holding a space station hostage to get what he desires that week. He'll also gladly capture and threaten to outright murder humans just to get an advantage over his enemies, sometimes torturing them as he does in the final episode purely because he can.

In the final episodes, he also shows how little his associates mean to him, telling his Friend in the Black Market (who had been captured by the Kaisers and was being used in an attempted prisoner exchange) that there's plenty more merchants in space and leaves him to his fate. After the Final Battle begins to turn south, he kidnaps Kouta (the Kid Hero of the show and Exkaiser's close friend) and abandons his crew, fully intending to leave them to be arrested and take Kouta off world as a trophy just to spite Exkaiser, then threatens to kill him to try and get an advantage when Exkaiser catches up to him.

Even his death is an act of spite: he throws himself into the sun, killing himself, just as one last middle finger to Exkaiser's belief all life is sacred rather than be arrested.

Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Qualities?

Dino Geist has none, he's just a greedy, vindictive monster willing to ravage entire planets to get treasure and money.

Heinous in story?

He's considered the worst Space Pirate in the entire universe by the Space Police and even a black market dealer considers him too ruthless by the end, and implies many aren't willing to even work with him because of how monstrous he is. Made worse by the fact his only competition is his crew, who are all Laughably Evil idiots.

Conclusion

I think he counts. He has no real competition in his own series and all the Brave Series are independent of each other, so even if one of the others has someone worse, it's not in the same universe. The guy being willing to put the lives of 8 million people in harms way just to spite the Kaisers alone makes him count in my book even if his other actions weren't as vile as they are. And, unlike his minions, he's played dead serious from beginning to end.

'Yes' to Geist.

Anywho, ACW, you've gone and jinxed yourself, apparently, because here's another candidate. evil grin

What's the work?

Transformers/G.I. Joe (No continuity relation to Transformers vs. G.I. Joe) is a miniseries of G.I. Joe that takes place in 1939, with Cobra being a stand-in for.....Nazis.

Yep.

(Co-Starring the Transformers! Woo-hoo, yay....)

Who is he?

It's a G.I. Joe comic, who do you think it is? Yet another incarnation of our favorite snake-based military commander, COBRA COMMANDER!

A stand-in for Adolf freaking Hitler (I guess), Cobra Commander is just as bad as his various counterparts across other media.

What has he done?

Firstly sending his troops after a fluctuating power located inside a monk monastery, Cobra's troops massacre the inhabitants and discover that the power source was a piece of the Matrix, a powerful object that raises the Autobots and Decepticons (Two factions of a giant-robot-race) from their stasis underground.

The Commander, using the Matrix to control the Decepticons, orders them to attack and decimate the locations of the Maginot Line (A huge Allies military base), Paris, Rome, and Berlin. Any survivors are thrown into concentration camps and mines where they are forced into slavery.

Using the Decepticons to launch attacks against his archfoes, the G.I. Joes, resulting in many U.S. army casualties, the Commander uses the Matrix to cow the Decepticons' leader, Megatron, into submission under the threat of extreme pain via the Matrix.

Regularly treating his subordinates, even his Co-Dragons, like dirt and threatening them with death, the Commander, after realizing his main base is under attack by the Joes and the Autobots, orders his "second line of defense" into action: Taking all of the innocents and slaves, including the children, in the surrounding area, and putting them, defenseless, on the front lines of the battle, knowing the Joes and Autobots won't be able to go full-strength for fear of catching the innocents in the croissfire.

Giving a heck of a New Era Speech, the Commander forces one of the Decepticons, Shockwave, to expend all of his energy (Effectively killing him) in blasting huge lasers onto the battlefield, catching his enemies, his slaves, and even his own minions in the blast, which mildly disgusts even Megatron.

Megatron: "Your great empire is as careless of it's own slaves as it is it's enemies, Commander!"

The Commander: "You'd know, if you ever HAD slaves, Megatron....that's what they're FOR."

Then, in a completely anticlimactic defeat, the Commander is betrayed by his Co-Dragons and shot dead after being half-crushed by falling rubble. Ugh.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

He's Cobra Commander emulating Hitler. Do you THINK he's got either???

Heinousness?

Worst in-story. Others (His Co-Dragons, Megatron, etc.) get up to some other crimes, but he's the one who gave them thew power and the opportunity to do so.

Nearly every crime in-story is on his orders, so yeah, worst.

Overall, he's the leader of a Nazi-like organization that wiped out 5 (Counting the monk monastery) highly-populated areas, forced any survivors into slave camps, used said slaves as human shields then executed them when the chance came, and treats his subordinates like dirt under the constant threat of torture and death.

Final Verdict?

Yet another Keeper of our Commander.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.
