Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Just wondering, are there any Golden Age villains that qualify(looking at DC and Marvel)?

Unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely. Characterization in the Golden Age of Comics is pretty thin, and many, if not all of the villains run together in terms of personality, motivations, etc, or fall into the category of racist, ethnic, or national stereotypes.

I mean, just as an example, Claw, a foe of the original Golden Age Daredevil (no connection whatsoever to the Marvel character) was certainly a nasty piece of work, but I flatly refuse to propose an Asian villain who looks like this.

[up]Isn't necessarily supposed to though, and that's the problem. We might not have explicit rules about not putting up racist stereotypes, but I'm damned if I will propose one.

It looks like Zahl has enough votes to support going up.

  • Doom Patrol, and later Teen Titans foe Captain Zahl was a Nazi U-Boat commander turned criminal mercenary who never gave up on imposing the Third Reich's vision on the world. After a confrontation with Niles "The Chief" Caulder left him down an arm and confined to a back and neck brace, Zahl took on a behind-the-scenes role, transforming Otto Von Furth into the always burning Plasmus, and manipulating the unstable Madame Rouge into betraying the Doom Patrol and Brotherhood of Evil both, resulting in the demise of both teams. Hunted across the world by surviving Doom Patrol members and associates Gar Logan, Robotman, and Mento, Zahl battled the New Teen Titans when he and his army joined Madame Rouge's attempted conquest of Zandia. Under Zahl's direction his men massacred thousands of Zandia's expat inhabitants, and captured the Titans, subjecting them to the horrors of his Devolving Pit. Foiled by Logan, Robotman, and the reconstituted Brotherhood of Evil, Zahl died when his final attempted murder of Robotman failed and claimed him instead.

How's that look?

P.S. Just a reminder: I think both Swemmell and "The Interrogator" were approved.

[tup] to Graven, Suzuki, Rowan North (he's bad enough to count, in my eyes), and Captain/General (maybe he just liked it better than "Admiral") Zahl.

[up][up]While on the subject, I remember their was that evil woman from a Mexican (I think) Telenovel that was proposed a few years ago, brought back up maybe a month or two ago and approved (she sounded especially vile, being a horrible mixture of extreme elitism, hypocrisy and cold blooded sociopathy) the proposer said they were going to write her up but to my knowledge never did.

Can't remember the shows name or the characters. Anyone know anymore about that?

'Yes' to Zahl. I had a feeling we'd end up adding his comic counterpart at some point.

Anywho, Rowan has 16 'Yes' votes, 9 'No' votes, and 5 'Abstain' votes. It's pretty close, but unless a substantial number of votes change, it looks like he's a Keeper.....meh.

Also, one thing I forgot to mention about Suzuki that, though inconsequential, shows he's even more a petty prick: When he's driving home one evening, a truck driver cuts him off in the street. Suzuki proceeds to hop out of his car and freaking slice the man into ribbons before blowing up every car surrounding them....including his own, much to his annoyance. Ugh.

  • The Teratologist: In this horror novel by Wrath James White and Edward Lee, John Farringworth is a depraved narcissist obsessed with his own perfection. Having always gotten what he wanted in life, Farringworth's ego takes a hit when a pair of beings he dubs the "Angels" refuse to have anything to do with him, leading him to devise a plan to force them to love him by taking the knowledge from God. Attempting to convince God to confront him, Farringworth begins kidnapping mentally and physically deformed people he dubs "freaks", injecting them with a drug that drives them into a sex-scrazed insanity, then does the same to religious leaders before recording them doing depraved sexual acts with the freaks. Along with leaking the videos of the relations online Farrinworth often disposes of his victims when through with them, at times raping some of them himself. When, rather than God, the devil confronts Farringworth, Farringworth demands the devil give him the power to bring hell on earth to destroy all innocence and goodness in the world in order to become the "perfect evil". An egomaniac turned psychopathic monster, Farringworth was so wicked that the devil himself sang his praises.

  • Junk: Record of the Last Hero: Suzuki is the "Red Junk" user, and is the most wicked character in-story by a large margin. Once a jobless bum, Suzuki quickly became power mad once given his own "Junk" supersuit, and immediately began brutally killing and maiming people for minor offences, claiming it was in the name of "justice". Showing his true colors after destroying a helicopter and its crew for annoying him, Suzuki first hunts down and tries to kill two defenseless women after slicing off the top half of the hotel they reside in, and later massacres over 170 people who used to be his workmates, stating that it's their fault he lost his job. Suzuki then became an assassin for hire who would kill anyone he was paid to, then murder his own employers once the job was done, regardless of innocence or guilt. Even when overpowered by another Junk user, Suzuki kills numerous innocents during his attempt to keep his suit for himself. A perfect mixture of laziness, greed, and sadism, Suzuki stood out even in this morally grey story as a truly monstrous individual.

  • Ghostbusters (2016): Rowan North is an intellectual ghost expert who despises humanity due to it not recognizing his "genius" and treating him like dirt his whole life. Deciding humanity should be purged, Rowan begins unleashing ghosts at various highly-populated locations, where they attack and nearly kill many people. After becoming a ghost, Rowan possesses the Ghostbusters' secretary, Kevin, and uses him to thrash two police officers and unleash his ghost army onto New York. While his ghosts wreak havoc across the city, Rowan first tries to kill Kevin, then transforms into a humongous monster in an attempt to kill the Ghostbusters, at which point he plans to lead his ghost army in butchering any and all humans across the world. Subverting a Freudian Excuse by targeting humanity as a whole and taking sadistic pleasure while doing so, Rowan stood out as a vile misanthrope who darkened this film in every one of his appearances.

Waiting on the abstains to change or more people to see the film/chime in for Rowan. This could end in the same situation as Underground!Robotnik or SATAM Wily(the former having a similar discussion to Rowan and this is also my issue with his inclusion as I feel a CM in this sort of film could have done more and you know, less telling more showing)

Can anyone list some examples of the "You Monster!" phrase actually being directed at a Complete Monster? Because I feel it's most effective when said to a true monster.

[up]No. Not our job.

Write-ups for Swemmel and the interrogator.

  • Darkness Series:
    • Swemmel, the half-mad king of Unkerlant is probably the single most tyrannical ruler in the story. Seizing power after the Twinkings War, Swemmel's first act as king was to have his twin brother and rival Kyot boiled alive in a cauldron, before launching a massive purge of the nobility. Ruling through fear alone, Swemmel cut a deal with King Mezentio of Algarve to divide Forthweg between them, then invaded neutral Zuwayza while the rest of the continent was distracted by the war against Algarve. When the Algarvians double-crossed Swemmel and invaded Unkerlant, Swemmel sacrificed his own peasants in magical rituals in order to buy time, declaring that so long as he had one subject left at the end of the war and Mezentio had none, he would be the victor. When the war begins to swing in his direction Swemmel proves himself as bad a winner as he is a loser, enslaving Algarvian prisoners, executing Grelzan prisoners, and boiling "King" Rainero of Grelz the same way he did Kyot. A paranoid megalomaniac, Swemmel finds himself the most powerful man on the continent at the end of the war, and is contemplating starting a new one against his erstwhile allies Lagoas and Kusammo.
    • The unnamed interrogator is a low-level government functionary and professional torturer in Jelgava. Initially an employee of King Donalitu of Jelgava, the interrogator goes over to the Algarvians when they conquer the country, and takes a special interest in would-be loyalist rebel Talsu. Arresting Talsu, the interrogator tries to torture him into giving up names of fellow "traitors", traitors whom he knows do not actually exist. When Talsu refuses, the interrogator instead tortures his wife, until each of them gives up names to save the other. Talsu is released, but strongarmed into helping the interrogator uncover more "traitors" under pain of rearrest. When the war ends and King Donalitu returns, the interrogator turns his cloak again and arrests Talsu for conspiring with the Algarvians to prevent Donalitu's return, denouncing his unwilling accomplice as the vilest of traitors. Responsible for the execution of dozens of innocent people and making Talsu's life a living hell, the interrogator abused anyone who came into his power, while dismissing his own treachery as the acts of a Consummate Professional.

I dont think you should link to their historical counterparts but put a note saying x is the equivalent of y IRL and etc.

Also any recent C Ms or proposals from Super Sentai? I don't think it will be that hard through within irredeemable Sentai villains as the shared universe ties are more vague than Power Rangers so they don't have to compete with established C Ms like Radiguet or Long or Grandinene for heinousness standard

[up] yes, that's it thank you.

As I said, she was proposed and approved, yet we never (to my knowledge) heard anything about her again. While the shows YMMV page does have a write up, none was approved here. Likewise the one on the YMMV page really needs rewriting. Its far to long and parts need rephrasing.

And I suppose if no one else is interested I'll do it.

As for Belarios (whose entry will come with this week's batch, as he has more than enough votes; but because I said I would): First off, there is no indications that anything the Nicolaitan order does is not on his orders, Plus he, you know, tries to create Hell on Earth tongue.
As for the heinous standard:

  • Satan, as I mentioned, is basically Greater Scope Orcus.
  • The Horsemen themselves, I guess could count? Though they're a Sealed Evil in a Can until Belarios and co. release them.
  • Now, the heroes are NOT morally pure. Each one ("an addict, a madman, and a deceiver") is a counterpart to one of the Horsemen:
    • Adam Cahill, the main hero (and Death's counterpart), is a member of the Order of Solomon (the enemy of the Nicolaitans and the keepers of the Seven Seals). He is probably the most moral character of the four.
    • The addict and Pestilence's counterpart, Jesse Grace, is a former musician who died from a heroin overdose at the age of 27 (likely not a coincidence). She was in a bad way.
    • The madman and War's counterpart, Reverend Lucas Hand, was raised by a Bible-thumping, alcoholic, abusive father; his beliefs were twisted so that he became a killer (a soldier) believing this was what God wanted. He later got married and had a child, but the wife died young; poor Lucas believed God was testing him, and sacrificed his son like Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac, God did nothing, and Lucas finally completely snapped. In his words:
Nothin' made sense, especially...blind faith. If God cares so little about us, then...let the world catch fire. So I started killin' people and would go on...until God told me to stop. He never did,
So, yeah, a psychotic killer, but a Tragic Villain.
    • The deceiver and Famine's counterpart, and the Corrupt Politician I mentioned in the original effortpost, is Senator Jordan Osbourne. He is a "small, petty child of a man", in Adam's words. Only his father's heir. Driven by money and power. Became an "empty, corrupt soul."
It should be noted, however, that all 3 of them fight the Horsemen, and all 3 find redemption, as we see in single panels at the end: Jesse is cleaned up and pregnant; Lucas "made amends to his God and family" and became a minister; Jordan now leads Hell's rebellion.
