Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Do you think we can make a Sonic The Hedgehog franchise page that add the examples from Monster.Western Animation and Monster.Video Games And Visual Novels.

I'm confused. Do you mean put a link to the work page in the Complete Monster page, or vice versa. If you mean the former that's already been done. Anyway here's the link.

@bobg- No, Concannon does not care for Babyface - in the climax, during Alexa's Calling the Old Man Out scene, she takes off Babyface's mask, which was very painful for him on account of him tying it down with barbed wire, and Concannon just laughs and films it. When he shoots Alexa, and Babyface panics, Concannon simply barks at him to "Get back in character".

New Sonic page works for me. BTW, I think they were put up before approval, so if anyone wants to try condensing the comic ones, especially Eggman and Enerjak, please feel free.

Touched up a mite. Also, what about Kage von Stryker? I don't know if he's been talked about, but he's seems much more low-scale compared to the other villains.

[up]Ah, MUCH better. Enerjak was a hideous Wall of Text. I believe the only entry that's over 400 words is Palpatine, and that makes sense as he's been in 4 movies, an animated series, a comic, and a novel; plus he's done so much and his the third member of the Complete Monster (Un)holy trinity.

Speaking of walls of text... there's a particular example on the fan works page on My Little Pony that particularly irks me.

  • The Shining Armor Arc has General-Admiral Solomon Azure Raven Makarov. A Parody Sue Played for Drama, Makarov's Establishing Character Moment has him attempt to have Shining Armor assassinated for not knowing who he is, even willing to shoot a squad of Columbian Griffins in coldblood just to get to him. Next time we see him, he tries to have an entire village of innocents slaughtered to keep them quiet about his plans, and its revealed his Alicorn cyborg Co-Dragons were actually four innocent ponies he forcibly transformed into killing machines, knowingly (and according to Mother Deer, possibly intentionally) trapping them in their bodies, aware but unable to do anything except follow his orders. He then proceeds to lure Shining's squad into a trap, and spend several paragraphs giving them a sadistic No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, including blowing off Running Gag's wing in petty revenge. His endgame consists of nothing short of two genocides, unleashing a superweapon that disables Pegasus and Griffin flight and sending hundreds if not thousands falling to their deaths, starting a massive war killing millions, destroying his own Empire's capital city, and forcing Shining to watch it all, including attempting to kill Twilight solely to hurt Shining. He also attempts to orchestrate Gilda's death solely to hurt Shining and Rainbow Dash. He gets even worse with the reveal that he had his own parents murdered (and attempted to do the same to his own half-brother) just to give himself a 'tragic backstory' and that he's actually a reality bending Equineoid Abomination called the Shadow of Chernobull that consumes the existences of creatures, erasing them from history in the process who used his powers to perform genocide on the entire Changeling race, who have yet to do anything wrong at this point. While it begins as a non-sapient entity, by the time we meet Makarov, he's become sapient enough to take unrestrained pleasure in the act of consuming others and letting them be aware enough to die terrified. When its creator Pandora let it loose in the Realm of Legends, intending it to be a living fantasy character and a being of pure imagination, it proceeded to consume countless existences, twisting the realm into its twisted fairy tale. Why? It couldn't bare the thought of stories existing that didn't include it, and thus desires to make every story about it. By the end of the saga, everycreature openly despises him except his 'mother' Pandora, who is still disgusted and horrified by what her child has done and actively helps Shining defeat Makarov. Shining, who adheres strongly to a Thou Shall Not Kill mentality, is so enraged by Makarov's crimes that he tries to outright kill him twice and ultimately feeds him to the Wolf, erasing him from existence. After Makarov's demise, Shining awakens to find a world where he never existed. What's it like? Several wars never happened and the world is overall a far nicer, safer, and more peaceful place to live, showing just how much pain and suffering Makarov had truly caused. The most sickening part? Makarov planned to paint all his victims as the villains and himself as the hero of the story out of a selfish desire to make everything revolve around him.

If there's anything to be done about it, please do.

[up] The entries in general are a mess. Do you know who added the Pony POV entries in the first place? There's some serious differences between what's listed on the Monster Page and what's on the YMMV page. I believe discussions took place a while back, but it seems nothing's come of them.

For the Cartoon Network section, I think we need to add The Beast from Over the Garden Wall.

He's an eldritch abomination (at least once we see him past the silhouette) who harvests lost souls into trees, where a deluded woodsman then grinds them into oil in order to keep a lantern lit, which contains the beast's soul. He follows the lost around and subtly works havoc in order to demoralize his victims. Then, they can be transformed into trees. He tricks people into believing that the souls of their dying loved ones can be saved if they keep the lantern alight, while providing them with the fuel for his lifeforce. He's also regarded as the ultimate evil in-universe and has no redeeming qualities (except perhaps a nice singing voice).

No, we discussed the Beast long ago. Apparently he's doing what's necessary for his own survival. Now you can propose a revaluation of him, but you probably have no argument we hadn't heard before.

If at all necessary, any condensing would be heavily appreciated. Fan Works in general really needs to be looked at.

I will say [tup] to Zygon and the body snatcher (man, Ennis sure likes to create monster characters).

Speaking of comics, here is a character that is worth keeping an eye on, Greg Pak is going to give Superman his own version of The Joker:

[up]Well, that sounds awful. A "Joker level foe"? The Hell do they even mean by that? An archenemy? That's Luthor. A sick fuck with no sense of morality and no limits on what he'll do? That's Brainiac and Mongul.

God I get tired of The Joker being held up as some standard to which all comic book villains should aspire to.

Sigh. Well, may as well see if he qualifies. BTW, I'll have to comb through the entries and see where The Holocaust would fit in. I can already think of Gunther Lutze.
