During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yeah, going to vote against the Headless Knight. I'm willing to consider evidence to the contrary, but I'm going to take descriptions of his villainy well salted.
Edit- Based on , I'm definitely going to vote

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiIf he's not treated seriously, to the Headless Knight.
Based on the new information, I'm going to change my vote on the Headless Knight to.
For me too.
He's a parody? I totally forgot that. Come to think of it, though, I do recall a slapstick chase scene involving his henchmen; contrast the aforementioned Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island where the humor and horror were entirely separate from each other.
Definitely a no if he's a parody. If he wasn't, easy yes. Yeah, that kind of matters. Thanks for bringing that up.
@HT
Happens when you haven't seen or read something in years. I've got a few candidates I'd love to propose, but I'm going to have dig up the books they were in so I can refresh my memory.
@ HT: Ah, don't worry about it. We all make mistakes from time to time, I mean, it WAS a long time since you had seen the movie!
It's pretty much a unanimous for the Headless Knight.
Alright so everyone is on Headless Knight. Alright, there is someone I wanted to bring to the thread Danielle Atron from The Secret World of Alex Mack.
Who is Atron and what has she done ?
Atron is the Corrupt Corperate Executive Big Bad of the series. She is the CEO of the company that developed the GC-161 chemical, and wanted to see it's results on humans. When she hears of a kid who's been drenched in the chemicals (the titular Alex Mack), she decides to track the child to perform experiments on her before killing her. She is not above using illegal methods to do so, her crimes including scaming investors, faking reports, discrediting politians, and having witnesses murdered, including the father of Alex's love interest, Hunter Reeves. She intending to use the chemical to make a weight loss drug and distribute it to the public despite knowing the side effects, and making off with the money before the FDA catches up to her. Once development for the chemical reaches a level where having Alex isn't important, she opts to have her killed. In the series finale, she traps Alex and her family in her chemical's plant, and plans on blowing it up to cover her tracks and get away with the money.
Any Redeeming Qualities of Freudian Excuse ?
Non that I remember, but I know she's a cold hearted woman who's willing to put people in danger for the sake of money. And while I don't remember if the people she had killed where onscreen, in the case of Hunter Reeves father, it was important enough to his character and story arc, where I think it's doesn't matter. The show is light hearted but I remember her being played seriously as a threat and villain.
"It's like...a cliff, and if I do it, I'm just gonna...fall." "I think we're already falling."I remember that show; don't remember there being murders!
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsI'm gonna need more before I can qualify her, honestly.
Thank you RT89. Changed

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsSame here.
Here's another batch of examples I wanted to bring up, most of which I think should be cut:
Dance Moms
- Complete Monster: See Moral Event Horizon below.
- Moral Event Horizon: Abby more or less crosses it in "You've Been Unfriended", when she decides to pick on Chloe just after she's gotten back from suspension, even going as far as calling her names like "blondie".
- Overlaps with Dude, Not Funny!.
A CM for being mildly rude? Do I even need to explain this? Cut.
Divinity: Dragon Commander
- Complete Monster: Corvus. He's the demon imprisoned in/powering the protagonists' Cool Airship...who can still influence others via Dream Walking. When you first meet him, he outright admits (proudly, even) that he is the reason your mother was murdered! If that wasn't bad enough, he tries to make a Faustian Bargain with the player, offering power in exchange for your wife's soul. And from his rather...enthusiastic tone when talking about all this, it's heavily implied he's getting off on the potential misery and death he could unleash. No wonder even Maxos is scared of the bastard!
The mother's murder is offscreen according to the work page, so that leaves him with trying to steal one person's soul. I'd say cut for failing the heinous bar.
Dolores Claiborne
- Complete Monster: Joe St. George. In the film he's introduced by smashing Dolores' back with a log, threatens to kill her after she tells him that she won't put up with his abuse anymore, stealing their daughter's college funds Dolores worked hard to build up, and is eventually revealed to have sexually abused their daughter. It's no wonder that Dolores takes Vera's advice to plot his death and make it look like an accident by having him fall down a hidden well in their yard.
Added to the page without going through the thread. Not sure either way on this one.
Dragon Rider
- Complete Monster: Nettlebrand, also known by his nickname The Golden One. Let's see, he ate all of Twigleg's brothers and the alchemist who created him, hunted the dragons to the edge of extinction and drove the remaining ones into hiding, and he treats his Mooks like dirt.
According to the work page he was created to be the ultimate evil dragon as part of an experiment. Does he still have moral agency?
EastEnders
- Complete Monster: Archie Mitchell started off as a Magnificent Bastard until he raped Stacey Branning shortly before his demise and perhaps started Bradley on his and then there was the fact....oh....he RAPED RONNIE, HIS OWN DAUGHTER, WHILE SHE WAS 13! Add this to Archie's attempt to kill his own granddaughter, his bankrupting of his family on Christmas Eve and seizing the Vic, caused a pregnant Ronnie to miscarry the day before, manipulated Sam and Billy into assisting him, used Janinie's own inner spark of good to use and humiliate her (throwing her out of the Vic in the middle of the night in a Santa suit) on Christmas Day, blackmailing Ian and threatened to demolish the Queen Vic to "tear the Heart out of the Community" (and Peggy).
- Rainie Cross not only blackmails a grieving Ian for cheating on his fiancé on the night his daughter, Lucy, was murdered, she also taunts him about his activities with her while his only daughter was being murdered. And then, when he stands up for himself, she doubles the price and, when Mick catches the two talking, he walks up to check on Ian, only for Ian to run and Rainie to try chatting Mick up. When Mick is then arrested for talking to a prostitute, pitting his marriage at risk, Rainie reveals she doesn't give a damn about it to her mum, not even bothering to learn Mick's name.
The first one might count, but cut all the Sitcom Archnemesis stuff in his write-up. Cut the second one entirely for failing baseline heinousness (might be one of those misogynistic examples as well).

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"The Dance Moms "example" just might be the funniest incorrect usage of this trope I've ever seen.
edited 24th Oct '14 9:57:43 AM by FriedWarthog
Agreed, that one should be cut.
UPDATE: Done. I also cut the bad MEH example.

Oh Christ. Cut that Dance Moms one. And if possible, message whoever added it and ask them just what in the world they were thinking.
EDIT:Thank you.

If someone thinks a little girl who calls her classmate "blondie" qualifies as an irredeemably depraved monster, one has to wonder how they'd react to the likes of Red Skull or Judge Death...
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"That Dance Moms example may be one of the worst misuses of the trope I've seen. If we follow the logic of whoever half-mindedly slapped that on the YMMV page, my dog is a complete and utter Monster because... she barks at people on her walks.
Good enough for me.

You know, I MIGHT be willing to MAYBE give a pass to someone for putting an example up without coming here...that Dance Moms entry isn't one of those examples
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsThat Dance Moms example is almost as bad as that mountain lion example Footsteps spoke about last year when speaking about misuse for this trope.
Or maybe that person who got an entry for bursting a volley ball.
Btw your welcome ACW.
I don't remember the mountain lion example; what was that one?
Yeah, voting a BIG no on the Headless Knight. The entire movie was pretty much a light-hearted comedy mixed with a lot of black comedy during the Knights' scenes, and the Knight himself is pretty much a full-on parody of a Complete Monster/slasher movie villain, far from being played straight. I mean, the characters are afraid of him, but he's not really meant to be taken all that seriously, he's more or less a comedic villain.
