Well, I let my muse take me after all. Here is what I've written so far - not much, but the story is starting to take shape in my head. Still needs a name, but that will come to me eventually.
Any feedback appreciated, even if it's just that this bit of writing is terrible. :)

That's really interesting.
The Kuyou-speak's decent, but for me it leans toward Yuki's form of speech to a greater extent because of the data-esque words I see cropping up. Then again, this is the start of it, so I'll see how it turns out.
I liked the short expostion about Kyon's mother, but that bit about being willfully oblivious makes me wonder when in the timeleine this is set in.
Looking forward to the next installment, whenever that may be.

I did naht.Re. Seven Deadly Sins.
The whole idea came from an illustration I found in tumblr some time ago that I liked enough to make a wallpaper of it. A few days ago I stumbled across the file of later and I said to myself, "Hey, that's a good theme for a Halloween Cosplay. Now, which series' cast would pull it off the best? The Big Damn Harem, not question about it. (I'm unashamedly biased). Still, one of them would have to take one for the team and dress as Luxuria, the skimpiest of the lotā¦ Mikuru. Yep, I can totally see Mikuru getting sweet-talked into itā¦"
Wait! Snippet Idea!
Note: Set in the future of the story (close to Halloween, obviously). Draft quality.
Means and Objectives.
"I-I'm sorry, Haruhi-chan. I couldn't possibly wear somethingā¦ something like this," Mikuru declined the offer and placed the paper containing Kanae's design for her costume as far from herself as she could on the clubroom's table.
"Really?" Haruhi groused. "Is there no way you would change your mind? It'd be so much fun for the seven of us to go to the Halloween party as a themed group. Without you, we'll have to scrap the," she dropped her voice, "Seven Deadly Sins idea altogetherā¦"
"But mine is just tooā¦ daring. And there will be people I don't know at the party. Boysā¦"
"Actually, the sex ratio is heavily skewed towards the girls' side. Besides us, Yanagimoto's friends from the rhythmic gymnastics club will go, plus Sakanaka's friends from the chorus too and probably some of their boyfriendsāguys aren't too kind on dressing up for Halloweenā. There is also Mori-san as a chaperone. Totally safe."
"ā¦ I hear Yuki-chan invited the Computer Research Society."
Haruhi winced at that but quickly recovered. "Those guys are harmless. Probably they won't be able to tear their eyes from Yuki anyways!"
"I'm right here, you know," Kyon complained, but he couldn't do much more than that right now because he was effectively immobilized, standing in as his own dummy model for Yuki, Kanae, Tsuruya and a small arsenal of sewing pins to work out the details of his own costume.
Haruhi ignored him in the same she (and everyone else) ignored his retorts about him not needing a new outfit thanks to his tools' holographic capabilities.
"There are also Kyon-kun's friends," the time traveller added.
"Point. Taniguchi is a perv, but Yanagimoto will be there to keep him on a short leashā¦" Haruhi paused, seeming to considered something. "Sasaki-chan, remind me to suggests Ai-chan a costume for Taniguchi that can actually include a leash. A werewolf with chains or something."
"Appointed," the new secretary of the SOS Brigade acknowledged without taking her attention from her new computer, actually Skynet's little "sibling" and merely shaped like a tablet computer.
"As for Kunikida, the guy is a huge idiot but a gentleman. Heck, the main objective of this party is to help him and Sakanaka to get out of No Hugging, No Kissing territory."
"Eh? I thought you mentioned chaperones before," Mikuru observed a little confused.
"Well," Haruhi said uncertainly, apparently looking for a way to word herself diplomatically, "To be honest, Mori-san is convinced that Kyon is a real life pornomancer and she surely won't complain if a few couples sneak out to make out for a short while."
"I'm still here, remember?"
"What is a porunouā, er, the thing you said Kyon-kun was?" Mikuru asked, "It's not in my classiā, I mean, I don't know that word. English?"
From the top of the head of the young man with the dejected and resigned expression, Achakura raised her small hand as the diligent student she always was, but she then correctly interpreted Haruhi's subtle hand gestures and remained quiet.
"That's not important right now, Mikuru-chan," Haruhi lowered voice again. "Back to the point, your costume is not that bad. Like a swimsuit, I'd say."
"ā¦ do people from this time period really wear swimsuits like that?"
"Maybe not in Japan, but I bet they totally do in America and Europe. Furthermore, it has high tights. Just with that it already covers more than what a swimsuit of the similar design would do."
"I'm not sure know why, but I they make the outfit a lot worse somehow."
Haruhi crossed her arms and contemplated the situation. To her eyes, Mikuru's main problem is that her costume is just too damn risquƩ and the guys would lose their higher brain functions and stare at her like hormone-addled zombies. Kind of the whole point if she was supposed to play "Lust", but Haruhi knew that an argument like that was less than weak for Mikuru right now.
Haruhi also knew that poorly concealed leering would be the worst all of them, not just Mikuru, would have to endure at the party. "Shutaro" wasn't supposed to attend, however Haruhi observed that even without him around, guys didn't dare to strike a conversation with Mikuru without a good excuse, much less hit on her, if Kyon was nearby. The same applied to Sasaki and Yuki, the only allegedly single girls in the Brigade.
She guessed that guys must have some tacit code of conduct among themselves for this kind of situations that girls just don't get.
That, or they're just too scared of Kyon giving them a "Yamane" or worse, which, by the way, is Kitago's slang for dangling a dude out of a window until he wets himself.
In any case, Haruhi realized that Mikuru would be a lot easier to convince to take one for the team if Kyon were there to throw in his support. Sure, he most likely already suspected what Haruhi was trying to do, but so far Kyon remained in the dark about how Mikuru's costume actually looked like. However, if that changed, he'd instead do his utmost to make them drop the idea.
Now, how to get Kyon's backing without him asking to see Kanae's design, or better yet, without him knowingā?
A snap of fingers. Haruhi already had her answer.
"Mikuru-chan. Mikuru-chan, come here," Haruhi whispered, motioning the time traveller to get closer. Once she did, Haruhi put her left arm around her shoulders, making sure they had their backs turned to Kyon, and murmured to her ear. "Correct me I'm wrong, but you don't want to wear Kanae's design because guys at the party will be staring at you?"
Mikuru made a disgusted face and nodded.
"Have you ever thoughtā¦" Haruhi paused for effect, "ā¦ that one of the guys looking at you will be Kyon?" she launched the metaphorical hook in an even more conspirational tone and waited for the fish to bite.
Mikuru said nothing. She blinked. Once, twice. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound left her lips.
"Just think about it. You, there, looking positively, sinfully gorgeous. The focus of all the guys' gazes and the girls' envy. But you don't care about them, do you?" Haruhi lowered her voice further and spoke closer to Mikuru's right ear. "You care about him. He will notice you, how he won't? He will be looking at you, just unsure about what to do."
Haruhi noticed that Mikuru had her eyes closed, probably picturing the scenario she was, almost literally, whispering into her mind.
"But there are too many people who don't know your secret. He wants to approach you, but he can't because he has to keep up appearances. You have a boyfriend, he has a fiancƩe. That's what everybody knows."
At this point, this distance, Haruhi was sure Mikuru could sense her breath in her ear as well as her words. She also knew that even though the time traveller was buying her vision, pulling the line too soon would make her lose the bait.
"However," she continued, "he will also notice all the attention you've been gathering. Guys daring each others to speak to you. Girls complaining more and more vocally about your choice of attire.
"At some point, he will act. He knows how much of a bad idea it is, but he won't be able to stop himself. He's a guy after all, he's male and as such some primal part of his being will be urging him to seek you out, to beat the competition, to single you out, to claim you. And I'm sure you won't be stopping him."
Haruhi moistened her dry lips. Mikuru remained silent, eyes shut. Haruhi could feel a faint trembling under his left arm.
Just a little more.
"It will start simple enough, just some conversation, innocent. But people's stares won't go away. Instead, they'll focus, focus on you two and everything you're doing. It's the expectation. You, him and everybody can tell something it's going to happen.
"Suddenly, he will complain. The air is too hot, the music is too loud. It doesn't matter. The party will be at Yuki's place and her apartment is huge. Many empty rooms, enough privacy. He will invite you to one of them, away from the noise so the both of you can hold a more 'serious discussion'. About school and work, he will say. About fate and predā"
"Haruhi, you may not care I'm still here, but I think you'll want to know that one of Skynet's latest updates includes an unidirectional microphone activated and directed by subvocal commands. You know, just in case I need to listen in a conversation without making a sound and I'm unable to operate my cellphone with my hands."
Both girls' thoughts screeched to a halt. They turned around as one. Kyon was looking at them from the corner of one's eye, arms spread apart, sewing pins holding his sleeves around them while Tsuruya and Yuki drew various designs with a few pieces of tailor's chalk on his suit and cape. Although, everybody present stopped what they were doing to watch the exchange between Kyon and Haruhi.
"H-How longā¦?" Haruhi almost unconsciously let slip the one question the repeated itself incessantly in her mind.
Kyon made a deliberately long pause before sighing and confessing the truth. "Not much, just a few words, actually. I did catch your reference to John F. Kennedy and that's why I interrupted you. I'm guessing you were selling some sort of tale to Mikuru-chan about how Kunikida and Sakanaka-san might grow closer if she helps out?"
Haruhi very badly wanted to let out an huge sigh of relief, but that would make Kyon suspicious and she already lucked out big time with Kyon listening in only when he did and speaking up before she could complete the word "predetermination". Just one additional syllable and he would have not misconstrued her words as he did.
"Knowing Haruhi," Kyon said to Mikuru, "her plans involve dressing you into something new, probably embarrassing." Mikuru nodded, and surprisingly Haruhi mirrored the gesture. "But if you don't want to, that's it. End of the story. Okay?"
Just as she predicted, a few words from Kyon were enough to reassure Mikuru and Haruhi could already tell how the whole things would go. That's why it was such a surprise when Mikuru simply said, "I'll do it."
""Eh?"" Haruhi and Kyon betrayed their surprise in unison.
"Yes," the time traveller confirmed, "that's right. Once Haruhi-chan explained what she had in mind, I couldn't but find myself wishing for it to come true."
"W-Wait a minute, Mikuru-chan. I didn't meā" Haruhi tried, butā¦
"After all," Mikuru interrupted with a smile just a bit wider than the usual, "I can't let such good intentions go to waste, Can I?"
"I don't know what Haruhi told you to convince you, butā"
"Do you want to know?" Mikuru asked suddenly.
"That's all right, Mikuru-chan," Haruhi interrupted. "What can I say? You and your costume theme are made for each other," she said and grinned the same way Mikuru used to be scared of not a year ago, "I just hope I'll do justice to mine."
"Er, I'm feeling a little lost here. What are your costumes about, anyway?"
"Luxuria," the time traveller said.
"Avaritia," Haruhi added.
"Sounds familiar. Is that Latin?" Kyon shivered, "I do wonder why it gives me the oddest feeling of foreboding."
Neither girl replied.
The cards were on the table, the objective clear and just like that a challenge as old as humanity itself was issued.
And Kyon was none the wiser.
For a while, that's it.
Erā¦ that was different, alright. Competitive!Mikuru isā¦ yeah. Moving alongā¦
The author of the original illustration also made individual posts of each of each girl on it. From left to right, we have:
- Ira (Wrath)
- Gula (Gluttony)
- Invidia (Envy). Watch out the right hand.
- Superbia (Pride)
- Acedia (Sloth)
- Avaritia (Greed)
- Luxuria (Lust)
@Jason Ulloa:
The reason why I picked "gluttony" for Kuyou is because of her very joie de vivre approach to life. In a way, she basically descended to Earth to enthusiastically learn and enjoy all the good things, both mundane and extraordinaire, this planet has to offer: love, good food (other than noodles), good friends, love, adventures involving kicking huge amounts of extra-dimensional ass and the occasional Humanoid Interface, wearing nice clothes varying from the adorable to the distracting and, of course, more love.
Kuyou's characterization is like a Shout-Out to Myria Lejean (with a taste for cookies instead of chocolate, though). I mean, the following excerpt is very Kuyou-ish, don't you think?
I have seen galaxies die. I have watched atoms dance. But until I had the dark behind the eyes, I didn't know the death from the dance. And we were wrong. When you pour water into a jug, it becomes jug-shaped.
@Marq FJA:
That idiot would be myself (which makes slapping him around complicated because he's me as a hostage). It's just that many of my ideas just don't convince me completely. For example, the snippet above got me on fence about whether posting it or not for about an hour and I ended leaving the decision to a coin toss.
@Max Astro:
Sorry I can't read your story now. My national team won its good debut match at the FIFA World Cup and things got kind of festive around here. Long Story Short, it's around 8 AM and I need to sleep.

My K:BDH Recursive FanfictionGreat, but we all know they will dress as The Seven Sisters of Purgatory. What they wear is just a modern Angel Mort uniform, anyway.
@Max Astro: It does look good, in my opinion. The In Medias Res feels a little "Oh, I know he will be saved somehow." to me, but who knows maybe it turns into a Anyone Can Die kind of thing.
What I liked is how Kyon's mother was portrayed, which reminds me how every adult woman in the story is just freaking based. Especially Miyuki. I squealed every time she appeared, even before I realised she was from Higurashi.

@Jigaboo: I had considered making it more explicit when the timeline is set, but I decided in the end to leave it as an exercise for the reader. It's fairly obvious, though.
I agree that Kuyou sounds a bit too much like Yuki in parts; I will probably revise her dialog a little. That said, you are shortly going to find out that she has a reason for sounding a bit more like Yuki than usual. :)
@Specular: That snippet is so lovely, I want more... I totally agree with your reasoning on Kuyou, by the way. And that artwork strongly reminds me of Soul Eater; coincidence?
@Taiboss: The opening bit is perhaps a little cliche, yes. Hopefully I will manage to surprise you despite that...? Time will tell.
Anyway, I'm working on the second part of chapter one now and will hopefully have it up later tonight.
EDIT: "Working on the second part" turned into "finishing chapter one"... ^^; Anyway, here is the link again for convenience sake, and as before feedback and criticism is most welcome!

P.S.: I think I am occasionally going to post little for-fun challenges related to this, as they occur to me. So! Challenge 1: Why is it .9 meters?
edited 14th Jun '14 7:40:03 PM by MaxAstro
Fair point. I didn't think about it that way. Makes perfect sense when you explain it like that.
I pretty much cheated for this one, but .009 m, or 9 mm, which is one "local radius" is actually a single place approximation of Earth's Schwarzschild radius, which is the theoretical radius where if a planetary body was compressed into an object of said radius, the velocity required to escape the compressed planet's field of gravity is the speed of light.

@Specular: ... Shouldn't Haruhi be Superbia? Also, her speech pattern seems to have Tsuruya's Verbal Tic at a few places.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.@Taiboss:
I agree. I like when stories with young leads don't rely on having useless adults to make them relevant. About Miyuki, my hope always was that something like the following would happen:
Miyuki | : | *sitting at a table, sips her coffee* I did it because I always wanted to do what was best for society, and allowing Kyon-kun to be put into jail under questionable charges, especially when there is so much he has to do outside, would be a contradiction to my principles. |
Haruhi | : | *glomps Miyuki, rubs her cheek on the top of her head* That's so adorable. Can we keep her? |
Kyon | : | Haruhi, please don't make light of it. Akasaka-san might lose her job because of this. |
Haruhi | : | That's OK. If it happens we can always get her a better job. I think she'll be right at home with Mori-san. |
Miyuki | : | Erā¦ |
Kyon | : | You can't be serious. |
Haruhi | : | Of course I am! *looks at Kyon meaningfully* Unlessā¦ |
Kyon | : | What is it? |
Haruhi | : | ā¦ you don't have a thing for good looking older women, are you? |
Kyon | : | *thinks of adult!Mikuru* Noā¦ |
Miyuki | : | If you excuse me, Suzumiya-san, Kyon-kun. Could you answer one question? |
Kyon | : | *jumps at the chance to change the subject* Sure, what do you want to know? |
Miyuki | : | Thanks. It's just one thing I've been wondering. What would you have done if you actually got send to prison? |
Haruhi | : | Break him out, of course! |
Miyuki | : | !! |
Kyon | : | Wellā¦ |
Haruhi | : | Don't worry, Miyuki-chan. Just as a precaution, we had a very un-supernatural, low-key plan for it. With tanks and ninjas. |
Miyuki | : | *looks at Kyon with an expression that just screams "please tell me she's joking"* |
Kyon | : | Erā¦ More coffee? |
Well, probably not exactly like that, but you get my point.
@Max Astro:
I have a few things to say about Days of X, but they're mostly technical stuff. For example, being a document file from Goggle Drive, you could share the publishing link instead of the one meant for edition ("Publish to the web..." option in the File menu). It's more safe that way because your email address is better hidden. Google Drive links are very long by default, but you can use a URL shortener service like http://goo.gl to make it more easy to post and remember.
An example of the above for a dummy document would be http://goo.gl/TSJpXp
Granting people commenter access is a good way to get more detailed C&C.
@Jbstormburst:
Unrelated, but I wonder what it says about us as a species that we use such an intrinsic measure of longitude to our home planet as a well known ammunition caliber.
@Marq FJA:
Superbia is the vice of pride, hubris, and it's difficult to get any more arrogant than "whatever I don't think is possible, it is not." That's not the only reason why I think Sasaki fits "Pride" the best, though. As Jason put it, it's also in her backstory with Kyon.
Sasaki knew Kyon had a crush on her, but she refused to step down from the mentor's dais and stand at his side and on his level despite of this tiny little detail of her actually loving him back. It didn't fit in her ideal of herself. Love was a weakness, a "mental illness", and therefore disregarded (and outright scorned in canon).
The reason why I held nothing against Kyon/Sasaki in K:BDH is because the latter already endured the proverbial fall that goes after pride. The way how Kyon grew apart from her in middle school, seemingly agreeing with her reasoning for extra "ouch" points, hurt her. And then again when, instead of doing something about it, Sasaki lost time trying to rationalize the whole thing and Kyon was gone.

My K:BDH Recursive Fanfiction@Jstormburst: ...Also known as, the point at which the earth becomes a black hole. It seemed a logical thing for Kuyou to use as a unit of measurement. No idea what units she uses to measure distances in space, though! ^^; In any case, correct! You win one virtual-cookie!
~Chibi-Kuyou holds out a cookie twice as big as she is for Jstormburst~
@Specular: ...Well, I just decided that conversation is a canon thing that happened at some point in the timeline of Days of X. Hope you don't mind. It is too lovely to pass up. :) Especially since part of what I am doing with Days of X is trying to show the SOS Brigade in a more "stabilized" setting. I.e. after all the chaos of Book 1, this is what has become "normal". Or at least, what ~would~ be normal, if the events of the story itself weren't shaking thing up. If that makes any sense...
Oops, I just let slip exactly when the timeline is. Oh, well.
Also: It is now published and (I think?) open for comments, as per your excellent suggestion! Linky: http://goo.gl/7tEpak
EDIT: And the "stinger" for chapter 2 is finished; I hope to write the rest of chapter 2 tomorrow.

@Max Astro:
Do you mean the one with Miyuki? I don't mind at all. Humor Mode: In that case, probably I should tell you some of the steps of the "Great Escape Plan":
- Haruhi, Yuki and Shinobu as the "ninjas" (Haruhi's TK is required, it never hurts to bring Yuki into a plan and in this snip Shinobu has some experience breaking people out of confinement)
- Achakura driving a Tumbler by remote into the prison wall and then out in the most over-the-top manner possible. This is the Kansas City Shuffle stage of the plan meant to catch pursuers' attention. Sadly, the vehicle isn't supposed to survive the chase.
- Yuuto at the wheel of the getaway car that actually carries Kyon into safety.
- Kanae on standby, ready to bail people out just in case something goes wrong.
Unrelated.
Tonight I made a cover◊ for the EPUB version of the story and I want to hear your thoughts about it before updating the file. Just in case you're wondering, the pin on the lapel is a downscaled version of my interpretation of the design of the Tsuruya family crest.
You may notice that the coat isn't in fact similar to the one used by Kyon in the story. That's because I can't trace vectors very well. Or at all. My original idea needs a drawing like this out of this coat's design◊. If someone out there reading this post knows his or her way on the path of the SVG better than me (highly likely), could you please give it a try?
edited 16th Jun '14 9:57:19 PM by Specular
My K:BDH Recursive Fanfiction: Actually, I once emailed Brian about the Tsuruya family crest and he pointed out the picture he had on his story The Apology.
*tilts head* I thought there were two crests:
- The ancient one, the family kamon (家紋), used by the family since its foundation.
The far wall of the room was covered with a floor-length and wall-wide sheet of cloth bearing the symbol he guessed was the Tsuruya family kumon, the ancient crest from their family's founding. The stylized classic shapes of five cranes in a wheel formation beneath the peaked roof of a great house. Below that, on a large cushion was a man that seemed small only compared to the massive regalia behind him. If the large figure of the Tsuruya family patriarch wasn't imposing enough, the identically dressed and immaculate men in blue suits lining the sides of the room in orderly rows were enough to make him even more nervous.
- The one found on the pins for "family business".
"Ooh, good idea," he mused, while Haruhi felt her mouth drop open. Why would Tsuruya give Kyon a title as a yakuza advisor to a major boss? Before she could ask, he fished an elaborate jeweled pin from his pocket and stuck it to his tie; a golden crane with tiny diamond eyes on a sharp green five-sided backdrop. Haruhi stared while Tsuruya gave him an appraising look, then mussed his hair, loosened his tie, and untucked his shirt.
I don't think it should be too difficult to change the crest on the cover (bless you, layered image editing), but are you really sure that's the right one?
My K:BDH Recursive Fanfiction: Ah, I forgot about that one from Ch. 10. Never mind, the one I was referring to was the one in Ch. 9.
Little late, but part 1 of chapter 2 is done. It's a fairly rough draft since it's late at night; it certainly needs a couple re-reads and some rewriting, and I've probably made some continuity errors.
But it's there if anyone wants to check it out. :)
Oh, a request, though. There are enough hints dropped so far that it's theoretically possible to figure out where the plot is going (or who the bad guys are, at least). If you do figure it out, please don't post it here; I'd rather it stay a secret for now. Do PM me your guess, though. There's a dozen virtual cookies in it for you if you are right. ;)

Re. EPUB
New version of the cover◊ included in the file (just a few tweaks here and there, though).
Unrelated.
Anyone here is familiar with Arpeggio of Blue Steel? I ask because I got a crossover idea with this setting and I need a second opinion to see if this Plot Bunny lives or dies.
My K:BDH Recursive Fanfiction^I'm only familiar with Ars Nova, and I've heard the manga continuity is quite different.
Enjoyed Ars Nova, though.
Gonna check out Days of X.
I find it interesting how Kyon's pin is basically a modified Jedi Order Symbol
edited 24th Jun '14 1:24:01 PM by Taiboss
@thedarkfreak:
It's easy to see why fans of the manga were upset with the anime adaptation. For example, Ars Nova lacked of many very interesting plot threads from the source material (also chibis). Still, I personally can't complain because I'd have never picked up the series if not for the anime and my first reaction to it ("What theā¦? A full 3D CG anime? Really?").
About the Plot Bunny, it follows the manga continuity. The anime storyline is too self-contained and leaves out several key characters that make the crossover possible. Regardless of this, I highly recommend the manga if you have the time. I must warn you that it's serialized in a monthly magazine, with all that implies.
@Taiboss:
That's right. Given how Kyon's Laser Blade is mentioned in the story description, I couldn't help myself from adding a little Star Wars allusion to the cover. About the drawing itself, here you can find out how that idea came about.
My K:BDH Recursive FanfictionYo, nobody's posted on here in about a month, has there been any progress on the next chapter? The last update I saw was the rough draft of 64, but I haven't really seen anything about it since then.
Association exercise:
There are Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath, Avarice, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy and Gluttony. The Big Damn Harem consists of seven girls: Haruhi, Yuki, Mikuru, Tsuruya, Kanae, Kuyou and Sasaki. (a.k.a. the Seven Deadly Girlfriends)
Now, which girl do you think better represent each cardinal sin?
At first blush, I'd say:
Makes sense to me. Here's my thinking:
Okay, so there's my reasoning (rambling?) behind each choice. So, what do you think their Halloween costumes would be?
