edited to add this information, since this is going to be a long clean-up

"Donald Trump, as with any other current political figure, should not be a subject of any trope example on the wiki, except:

  • When the work in question specifically mentions the RL individual.
  • When the entirety of the example has to do with the portrayal of that individual in the work.
  • When the work is fictional.

All three of these must apply.

Alternatively:

  • When the RL individual has a creative role themselves, such as writing or acting in a work. In this sense we give them no more nor less treatment then we would any other creator.

Additionally, please make sure to take out any examples of "Funny Aneurysm" Moment, Harsher in Hindsight, or Hilarious in Hindsight regarding these political figures. A political event that may be seen positively by some people may be seen negatively by others.

We're starting with the wicks to Donald Trump (There were 751 of them at the starting point of this count.)

Wicks have already been checked and cleared up to

2/14/17 Inherent in the System

Given the current political climate, talking about Donald Trump on this Wiki is a very sensitive topic and pretty much any comment on him could easily end up violating the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment. I talked it over on Ask a Troper and a moderator gave me permission to start this topic. I feel it will be necessary to make sure any mention of him is safe and avoids politically charged or biased opinions. Right now, we need to stick to facts, not opinions.

Here they are (plus another one I think is over the line) in appearance order:

  • The Twitter joke trial. After a guy was arrested for posting a joke about blowing up an airport on Twitter, thousands of people reposted the joke verbatim with the hashtag #iamspartacus.
  • The Satanic Verses fatwa called for the death of all publishers along with the author. The German translations has two pages of “publishers”, more than two hundred individuals and some eighty publishing houses.
  • During the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, there were reports that police were using social media to find out who was going to show up. Over one million people responded by doing a virtual check-in in Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Even though police said they were not looking at who "checks in," it is nevertheless a show of solidarity.

Ok. the Main.Real Life and UsefulNotes.Real Life has a lot on Trump right now. Not sure whether it's kosher or not.

I no longer edit on TV Tropes but will continue as an occasional forum poster.

Specific examples? Also, please read the sticky header. No example is valid or desired if it doesn't follow each and every one of those three rules. That's actually the site policy for any real life person, but it seems to attract the most ROCEJ fun units when politics are involved, thus this splinter thread was made to separate a particularly flamebaity issue from the main RL rule breaking thread over in Long Term Projects.

I found a Take That! example directed at Trump in Characters.Mr Robot E Corp Since we already established that Take Thats involving the mane are inherently ROCEJ violations I plan on removing it after this post. I'm just posting here for archival purposes.

the example I removed:

  • Take That!: Calls Donald Trump a cocksucker in the ninth episode of Season 2, in disbelief that he's running for president.

I recently purged the Real Life pages, so let me just check to see if anybody added back what I already took out...

Okay, so we don't have UsefulNotes.Real Life and I just Ctrl+F'd the Main.Real Life subpages' source pages. There is no mention of the word "Trump." I also looked for the word "president" and got maybe a questionable Our Presidents Are Different entry on RealLife.Tropes N To S.

Cut the examples from This Cannot Be!

Also, should examples under Crack Defeat be cut? Should I just cut all the Real Life examples for similar reasons?

[up] I brought Crack Defeat to the NRLEP thread. It looks like a complaint magnet.

[up]So should I cut all real life from it?

FYI since this trope is invoked for Rule of Funny, real life examples are inherently misused.

[up] No, because that could get you in trouble with the mods for unilaterally deleting a large folder or trying to make something NRLEP without going through the thread first. Questions that concern entire RL sections ought to go to the NRLEP thread.

From Unfortunate Character Design, underneath the Pokemon part.

  • Yungoos and Gumshoos are styled after hardboiled detectives, but their yellow combover hair and constant scowl gives them a rather uncanny resemblence to Donald Trump.

Should this be cut too?

Yes. The only reason it was added was to take a shot at him. He has nothing to do with either one.

What about this Hilarious in Hindsight entry from YMMV.Toy Story?

  • In Toy Story 3, Barbie displays a surprising amount of political knowledge when she calls out Lotso-Huggin' Bear for his tyranny, saying "Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force!" After Donald Trump was elected President of the United States in 2016, Teen Vogue made waves by becoming an opponent of Trump and his policies.

Any Hilarious or Harsher In Hindsight entry that deals with RL politics (and especially #45) should be nuked on sight. No exceptions, iirc.

Explain to me what Teen Vogue has to do with Toy Story?

The requirements are right up at the top of this thread. if the entry doesn't meet those requirements, cut it and link to that post in your edit reason.

I see some debate over the inclusion of recent politics in Awesome.Real Life. Examples that fall under this thread have been removed, but it still leaves the question "how do we deal with anything political with the trope?"

We remove it. Period. Any statement at all about something political being "awesome" is an invitation to an argument.

So both Tomorrow Never Dies and Rogue One have Harsher in Hindsight blurbs comparing associates of Trump's to the films' respective villains, both of whom are on the Complete Monster list. Surely that's not allowed, right?

Also, I cut the Gates and Jobs example on Tomorrow Never Dies since it seems to be shoehorning.

In light of the caption on Recap.Pokemon S 20 E 9 To Top A Totem (which predictably has a Trump pothole) I'd like to ask for a refresher on the consensus of MAGA references.

Official consensus: They're probably not valid, since few works are about the campaign, and they're usually used as an attempt to avoid talking about Trump by name. Out liberally. If it's decided that it was a valid reference, it can be put back. That caption was not and I removed the whole thing, since it wasn't just the pothole, it was the entire caption that was i n violation — I really doubt that the episode was about Trump.

Some references have come up on the Replacement Scrappy page. Any objections to trimming the entry to "any example from the opposite party is viewed as this to some"?

Yes.

Don't trim it, cut it completely. It's bending the definition of The Scrappy and Replacement Scrappy to the breaking point. cut the whole massive mess. Or I'll put on my mod hat and do it if you aren't comfortable making that big of a deletion.

[up]Deleted the president's examples. If you think anything more need deletion, do so. In fact, I'd say the trope is a candidate for No Real Life.
