Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

The UsefulNotes.Statue Of Liberty is a work of Art with tropes like Light Is Good and Holy Halo, but it's listed on a Useful Notes page. Would it be appropriate to move the content to Art.Statue Of Liberty?

I believe that because some of those tropes apply to the Useful Notes version (how the statue is portrayed in works), those examples should remain. Examples that apply to the statue itself can be moved to Art.Statue Of Liberty.

Alright, I'll make a separate page in the Art namespace whenever I have the time.

How is the Fan Works namespace supposed to be capitalized?

The capitalisation is FanWorks, according to the Article Count, Administrivia.Namespace and Pages In Accidentally Miscapitalised Namespaces.

Also, please answer the question in 1199.

Sometimes we don't answer because we don't know the right answer. I know I'm very shakey on the difference between Visual Novel and Video Game, so I generally let others resolve questions regarding those media.

The distinction is a highly arbitrary one. Use whatever it's considered as outside TV Tropes.

[Pasting this from another thread]

I want to make a page for Mother Goose Club, a series of educational shorts that feature six colorful characters singing nursery rhymes, because I honestly love it. But I don't know what medium it is. Is it.....

-Live Action TV?: It does air on some PBS stations in the Tennessee area, where the show is filmed

-Web Original?: It did start out as a series on You Tube

-Music?: When I search it up, it says that MGC is a musical artist. There's also several album releases.

-Western Animation?: Some of the shorts are cartoons

I just made a page for the Korean manhwa The Ruler Of The Land but screwed up the namespace, so I would like to have it move to the Manhwa section. Thank you so much.

Would Strawinsky and the Mysterious House go in WesternAnimation/ or WebAnimation/? It's only purchasable over the internet, so I would think WebAnimation/, but then there's stuff like Big Buck Bunny which is in WesternAnimation/. So where does Strawinsky and the Mysterious House go?

[up] Big Buck Bunny is a somewhat odd case. It's actually a technology demo, and is distributed on DVD-ROM with all the models and everything you need to recreate or modify it. The whole thing (including all the software you need) is either released under a Creative Commons license or is Open Source.

But it was released simultaneously on DVD and the Web, so it's not unreasonable to put it under Western Animation/.

Hey, I'm not sure if this has already been asked, but here we go: I'm very new to TV Tropes, and I tried to create a new Works page, but I messed up on the namespace. I have a feeling I need to start over, but I already put in a lot of work. Is there a way to start over and not lose all my work? EDIT: I fixed the problem (I moved it) but because I'm a new troper who screwed up, I can't fix the fact that I accidentally created a new namespace, as in, I can't delete it. What can I do?

[up] I did try that, but since I’m a new troper, I can’t access it. And what is the cut list, exactly? I checked the page and saw that the Dr. Frost namespace was still there...is there anything I can do?

[up] The cut list is for deleting pages. Cut requests take a while to go through— you just gotta wait.

I know this is a bit of a strange question, but where do individual Roblox games go? ROBLOX Adventure Forward 2 Points Of Conflict is in the VideoGame/ namespace, while ROBLOX Adventure Forward Star Savior is in the Recap/ namespace. Which is correct?

VideoGame/

Recap/ would be for things like chapters in the work.

Last night, I made a page for a comic called Revolver. Kind of new at this namespace stuff, but how should I format it?

Formatting seems OK, but the page should actually be at Revolver. Crosswicking is also needed, and the page should be on an index.

New pages, Love 365 and Lovestruck, for apps containing multiple Visual Novels. They've been created under Creator/ but is that the appropriate namespace, or would Visual Novel/ or Video Game/ be better? Choices: Stories You Play is the same type of app, so the question concerns it as well.
